Register Herald Obituaries for January 16, 2000 Harry Cook BRENTON - Harry Cook, 67, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at his residence following a short illness. Born Feb. 27, 1932, in Pine-ville, he was the son of the late Will P. and Josephine Short Cook. Mr. Cook was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War and a 32nd Degree Mason. He was a graduate of Marshall College, Marshall University, and he attended Florida State University. He was retired from Wyoming County Schools and was former principal of Baileysville Grade School. He attended Baileysville Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Jack, James and Richard Cook; and three sisters, Nell Rutherford, Ann Marler and Juanita Vermillion. Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Joyce Bailey Cook; a son, Samuel P. Cook and his wife, Faith Sadler Cook, of Scott Depot; a granddaughter, Emilee Hope Cook of Scott Depot; two brothers, Edward Cook of South Charleston and Thom-as Cook of Christiansburg, Va.; a sister, Sue Lusk of Chesapeake, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Evans Memorial Chapel, Oceana, with the Revs. Mike Cook and Jamie Prater officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Born May 2, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Randall and Iva Broyles Daugherty. She was a member of Peterstown Missionary Baptist Church and the Marie Ball Circle. She also served as an adviser for Baptist Youth Fellowship. In her early years, she worked as a volunteer Baptist Youth Camp counselor and taught Sunday school. She was a graduate of Peters-town High School and received a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Concord College, where she was a member of Cardinal Key and Delta Sigma Epsilon. She received a master's degree in education and a master's degree in elementary reading from West Virginia University. She started her teaching career at Cashmere Grade School in 1950-51. In 1952-53, she began teaching at Peterstown Elementary, where she remained until her retirement. She was a member and past matron of Peterstown Chapter OES No. 118, member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Honorary Teachers Society, and a life member of the WVEA, NEA and MCEA. She was also a member and past president of the Monroe County Reading Council. Survivors include a brother, Raymond William Daugherty and his wife, Betty, and two sisters, Ruth Daugherty Dalton and Linda Patricia Daugherty, all of Peterstown; a great-niece and four great-nephews. Services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel, Peters-town, with the Rev. Jonathan Jennings officiating. Burial will follow in Peterstown Cemetery. Born March 21, 1948, in Montgomery, he was the son of Gilda Sovine Buckley of Nallen and the late Talmadge Lee Dorsey. He was a retired chief petty officer from the U.S. Navy and was most recently employed by Harris Corp. Survivors include his wife, Carol Dorsey; his mother, Gilda Sovine Buckley, and stepfather, Everette Buckley, of Nallen; two daughters, Christine Rogers of Connecticut and Michelle Yoder of Ohio; a son, Brian Dorsey of Ohio; a stepson, Tony Nuchins of Florida; three sisters, Betty Crookshanks of Rupert, Donna Kay Washington of Oak Hill and Susie Lamphins of Ohio; a brother, Jack Eagle of South Carolina; and six grandchildren. The body was cremated. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. today at Bays Chapel Church, Nallen, with the Rev. Mike Loudermilk officiating. Born June 29, 1930, in Pike County, Ky., he was the son of the late Elder Carlos and Elizabeth Vanhoose Gibson. Mr. Gibson was a retired foreman for Cannelton Coal Industries with 41 years of service in the mines. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time with his family and at his Greenbrier County camp at Alderson. He was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Vernon and Everette Gibson; and a half brother, Columbus Murray. Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Shirley Ann Gibson; two daughters, Judy Persinger and her husband, Stanley, of Fayetteville and Sandi Vassil of Nallen; two sons, Hackney Gibson and his wife, Sherry, of Snow Hill and Larry Vassil and his wife, Tammy, of Fayetteville; four grandchildren, Samuel Gibson, Larry Allen Vassil and Jenny and Travis Persinger; and four brothers, James and Robert Gibson, both of Oak Hill, Ernest Ray Gibson of Bryan, Ohio, and Arthur Gibson of Bradley. Arrangements by Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill. ---------- Bobbie Jean Gwinn ALDERSON - Bobbie Jean Gwinn, 54, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, at the home of her mother in Alderson following a short illness. Born Dec. 11, 1945, in Alderson, she was the daughter of Jean Pitzer Gwinn of Alderson and the late Robert Hughes Gwinn, who passed away July 21, 1999. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a nephew, John David Loughhead, and a brother-in-law, David Clifford Loughhead. Miss Gwinn was a retired supervisor of education, having retired from the federal Bureau of Prisons, Alderson, after 21 years of service. Prior to her employment with the prison system, she was a physical education teacher at Alleghany High School in Covington, Va., and then did a work tour throughout Australia. Following her retirement from the prison system, she was a beef cattle farmer in Monroe and Greenbrier counties. Miss Gwinn was a 1963 graduate of Alderson High School and a 1967 graduate of Concord College in Athens, having received a bachelor's degree in recreation and a minor in library science. While a student at Concord, she was also a student aircraft pilot. She received her master's degree in education from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. Miss Gwinn was a member of Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church, Alderson, the Alderson Volunteer Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services, Monroe County Farm Bureau, American Dairy Goat Association and Monroe County Animal League. In 1980, she received recognition as an Outstanding Young Woman of America. Other survivors include a sister, Judith Gwinn Loughhead of Buena Vista, Va.; three aunts, Betty Pitzer Johnson and her husband, James, and Mabel Gwinn Pittenger, all of Alderson, and Kathleen Gwinn Morgan of Covington, Va.; two nephews, Robert Palmer Loughhead and his wife, Connie, of Natural Bridge Station, Va., and Jason Gwinn Loughhead of Buena Vista; devoted friend, Marilyn Glaser of Alderson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Born April 8, 1930, in White House, Ky., he was the son of the late Elmer and Gertrude Arthur Osborne. Mr. Osborne was disabled and of the Protestant faith. He was preceded in death by a brother, Elmer B. Osborne. Survivors include three sisters, Ocie Smith of Carlisle, Ardith Ellis and her husband, Morris, of Wharncliff and Opal Riser and her husband, Jim, of Beckley; two brothers, Donald Osborne and his wife, Carol, of Mentor, Ohio, and Ronald Osborne and his wife, Judy, of East Lake, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. Pome-roy, 94, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born March 9, 1905, at Highland Mountain, she was the daughter of the late L.F. Adkins and Roxie E. Adkins. Mrs. Pomeroy was a homemaker and a member of Quinnimont Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, James F. "Sam" Pomeroy, in 1948; four sons, Kenneth, Clema "Bud," David and Richard Pomeroy; two brothers, two sisters and a grandson. Survivors include three sons, Clifford Pomeroy and his wife, Germaine, of Burton, Mich., Melvin Pomeroy and his wife, Shirley, of McDermott, Ohio, and Paul Pomeroy of Prince; a daughter, Arbutus Gwinn and her husband, James, of Fenwick; a special niece, Shelby Murdock of Prosperity; 16 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. She was born and raised in Red Star. She spent most of her adult life in Welch and had resided in Princeton for the last several years. Mrs. Smith was the daughter of the late Welford Christian and Lettie Christian Logan. She graduated from Dubois High School, Mount Hope, and Bluefield State College with a bachelor's degree in elementary education. She continued her education through classes at West Virginia University and the West Virginia College of Graduate Studies. She was employed for 25 years by the McDowell County school board as an elementary teacher, primarily at Kimball Elementary School. She was a member of St. James Missionary Baptist Church, Welch, Bluefield Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta sorority, Bluefield State College Alumni Association and McDowell County Association of Retired Employees. Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Ergie R. Smith Jr.; a daughter, Alexis Street and her husband, Dwight, of Gahanna, Ohio; a son, Keith Smith and his wife, Letitia, of Roanoke, Va.; two sisters, Sylvia Smith of Baltimore and Betty Dearing and her husband, Clyde, of Hilltop; a brother, Cleo Christian of Charleston; an aunt, Maxine Howard of Hilltop; her mother-in-law, Betty Mary Smith of Baltimore; a sister-in-law, Bernice Howard and her husband, Herman, of Baltimore; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
