Register Herald Obituaries for January 17, 2000 Charles Wayne Bragg LEWISVILLE, Tenn. - Charles Wayne Bragg, 43, formerly of Abraham, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, in a Maryville, Tenn., hospital following an apparent heart attack. Born Sept. 9, 1956, in Beckley, he was the son of Charles W. and Helen Arthur Bragg, of Pluto Road, Shady Spring. Mr. Bragg was an employee of NAPA Auto Parts in Maryville, Tenn. and had made his home in Maryville for the past five years. He was a graduate of Shady Spring High School and was of the Freewill Baptist faith. Other survivors include two sisters, Drema Martin and her husband Kyle of Leivasy and Staff Sgt. Marilyn Kosturko and her husband Dennis of Irwin, Penn.; two brothers, Gary Paul Surratt and wife Linda of Shady Spring and James Floyd Surratt and wife Ida of Riverside, Calif.; paternal grandmother, Bertie Meadows of Beaver; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley with the Rev. Harold Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in the Goodson Family Cemetery No. 1 at Bragg. Burgess Mrs. Mildred P. Yost Burgess, 83, of Beckley, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, at the Pine Lodge Extended Care Center following a long illness. Born Nov. 9, 1916, at Raleigh, she was the daughter of the late John Preston Yost and Maggie Ethel Turner Yost. Mrs. Burgess was a retired LPN from Pinecrest Hospital after 35 years of service and was a former member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Beckley Post. She had made her home at Bailey Avenue for 40 years. She was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. She was preceded in death by he husband, Willis W. Burgess; daughter, Peggy Burgess Ballard; three brothers, Otis, Edgar and John P. Yost; a sister, Goldie Meadows; and a grandson, David L. Ballard. Survivors include a son, Bill Burgess and wife "Becky" of Beckley; two brothers, Harold and Arnold Yost of Raleigh; two grandsons, Daryl F. Ballard and Byron Burgess; and five great-grandchildren, Anthony, Abby, Olivia, Maegan and Regina Ballard. Committal services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Building No. 2. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity. Arrangements by Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Beckley. ---------- Vey Dalton Light GLADSTONE, Va. - Vey Dalton Light, 84, formerly of Marie, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at the Virginia Veterans Care Center, Salem, Va., following a long illness. Born May 15, 1915 at Marie, he was the son of the late Nathan G. and Virgie Lee Belcher Light. Mr. Light was a general laborer, having worked at the Veterans hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. He was of the Methodist faith and a member of New Hope Methodist Church, Marie. He was a World War II veteran, having served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Force. He was preceded in death by a brother, Van P. Light. Survivors include a brother, Floyd Z. Light and wife Jean of Kings, N.C.; two sisters, Shela Huffman and husband Cosby of Alderson and Beulah "Boots" Cochran and husband Boone of Alderson; sister-in-law, Christine Light of Gladstone, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Lobban Funeral Home Chapel, Alderson, with the Rev. Harry Jackson officiating. Burial will be in New Hope Cemetery at Marie. Born April 21, 1940, at Davin, she was the daughter of the late John William and Essie Marie Brown Gibson. Mrs. Maynor was a homemaker, a lifelong resident of Wyoming County and a member of Little Pilgrim Freewill Baptist Church, Cyclone. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carlos Lee Maynor; one daughter, Darlene Gibson; one son, J.K. Maynor; two brothers, Donald and Buddy Gibson; and one sister, Willie Maynard. Survivors include one son, Darrin Lee Maynor and his wife, April, of Cyclone; three grandchildren, Brandon, Dustin and Ashley Maynor, all of Cyclone; five brothers, Roland Gibson and his wife Barbara, Carmel Gibson and his wife, Jeannette, both of Cleveland, Ohio, Roger "Nig" Gibson and his wife Harriett "Sissy" of Brenton, Bob Gibson and his fiancee Juanita of Lyburn and Kurt Gibson and his wife Reva, of Cyclone; two sisters, Edna Morgan and her husband Robert and Sarah Maynor and her husband Roscoe "Boy" Jr., both of Cyclone; and her companion, Joseph Workman of Cyclone. Born Dec. 6, 1910, near Renick, he was the son of the late Samuel and Nonie Simmons. Mr. Simmons was a farmer, avid hunter and fisherman, last surviving member of the original Beaver Lick Hunt Club and retired from C and O Railroad after 18 years of service. He was preceded in death by a sister, Stella Dunbar, and a daughter, Nancy Simmons Loudermilk. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Clara Lewis Simmons of Renick; son, Eugene and his wife Linda of Hillsboro; grandchildren, Mellis Walker of Lewisburg, Jennifer Conkey of Spartanburg, S.C., Teresa LaValley of Frankford, David Loudermilk of Frankford, Amy Widney, David Simmons, Dustin Simmons and Daniel Simmons of Hillsboro; great-grandchildren, Michele Ramsey, Misty Brewer and Tyler Conkey; and great-great-grandchildren, Courtney and Alex Brewer.
