Register Herald Obituaries for January 23, 2000 Emily Massy Arbuckle MAXWELTON - Emily Massy Arbuckle, 85, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at a Greenbrier County hospital following a short illness. Born Sept. 7, 1914, at Max-welton, she was a daughter of the late Dr. Julian and Anna McLaughlin Arbuckle. Miss Arbuckle was a very active member of Clifton Presbyterian Church, Maxwelton, where she was a mentor and friend of the children of the church. She was a retired employee of the Farm Credit Corp. with 45 years of service. Survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Laurie and Sheldon Haynes of Lewisburg; and four nephews, Frank, David and Wood McCue and Edward Haynes and their families. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Clifton Presbyterian Church, Maxwelton, with the Rev. Elizabeth McNair Ayscue officiating. Born Oct. 10, 1920, in Italy, he was a son of the late Frank and Angela Renda Calacino. Mr. Calacino owned and operated Calacino's Pizza in Beckley for 66 years. A resident of Beckley since 1934, he was a World War II Army veteran. Survivors include a brother, Frank Calacino of Annapolis, Md.; three sisters, Virginia Zingo of Los Angeles, Ann Perry and her husband, Ed, of Prosperity and Catherine Calacino of Beckley; and several nieces and nephews, including Jeanette Meador of Johnson City, Tenn. Born April 1, 1903, at Prosperity, she was the daughter of the late William and Lillian Phillips. Mrs. Campbell was a lifelong resident of Hico, a member of Mount Tabor United Methodist Church, Hico, and a homemaker. She will always be remembered for her generosity and loving care of others. She was preceded in death by her husband, William A. Campbell; two sons, James W. Treadway and William Alva Campbell; three sisters, two brothers and a grandson. "Lummie" Cox, 88, of Shady Spring, died 3:20 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born Dec. 28, 1911, at Dunns, he was the son of the late Willis and Mary Hutchens Cox. Mr. Cox was a member of Mountain Creek Missionary Baptist Church, Dunns, a retired coal miner, a member of the UMWA and an avid farmer. He was preceded in death by two sons, Clifford and Leslie Cox; a grandson, Michael Scarbrough; and a sister, Nellie Carr. Born Oct. 12, 1928, at Lookout, he was a son of the late Charles Henry and Myrtle Craft. Mr. Craft was a retired coal miner. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served in the South Pacific during World War II, and was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rozine A. Craft, on Jan. 5, 2000; and two brothers, Wallace and Clement Craft. Survivors include a son, Charles Dewayne Craft of Statesboro, Ga.; three daughters, Debbie Huddleston and Tammie Taylor, both of Oak Hill, and Vickie Gibson of Fayetteville; a brother, Eugene W. England, 71, formerly of Mullens, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, in a Myrtle Beach hospital following a short illness. Born Dec. 3, 1928, in Phila-delphia, she was the daughter of the late William Beam Jr. and Vera George Beam. Mrs. England was a 10-year resident of Myrtle Beach, coming from Wyoming County, where she lived 30 years. She was a member of St. Johns Catholic Church, Mullens. She retired in 1989 as a registered nurse with 42 years of service, having last worked for Wyoming County Schools. She was coordinator of the LPN nursing program at Wyoming County Trade School and a former assistant director of nursing at Wyoming General Hospital, Mullens. Survivors include her husband, Charles Ray England; three daughters, Mary England Walker and her husband, Steve, and Barbara and Patty England, all of Myrtle Beach; two sons, Bill England and his wife, Joy, of McKinney, Texas, and Danny England and his wife, Sherry, of Mullens; two brothers, William Beam III of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Daniel Beam of Philadelphia; six grandchildren, Julie and Stephanie Walker, Christina Akers, Zachery England, and Billy and Danny Leacock; and three great-grandchildren. Born July 30, 1931, in Whites-ville, he was the son of the late Harry and Avis Shawyer Mace. He was a foreman for Westmoreland Coal Co. for more than 30 years and was a Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Denise Mace. Moore, 91, of Beckley, was called to the meeting around God's throne Wed-nesday, Jan. 19, 2000, following a long illness. Born June 10, 1908, in Mount Airy, N.C., he was the son of the late Walter and Lenora Moore. Mr. Moore married his wife of 66 years, Ethel Strickland Moore, in May 1933. He was a member of St. Matthew's A.M.E. Church, Beckley, where he was a member of the senior choir until his health began to fail. Mr. Moore was a retired coal miner for Eastern Associated Coal, Stotesbury, with over 40 years of service, and a member of the UMWA. Mr. Moore was a man who loved the Lord; he loved talking about the Lord through scripture, word and song. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Helen Marie Moore and Vergie Manning; a stepson, Samuel Moore; four brothers, the Rev. Willie Moore, Elder John Henry Moore, James Moore and the Rev. Loranzy Moore; a half brother, Cobe Taylor; four sisters, Carrie Benzo, Lou Ellen Flippen, Rosie Johnson and the Rev. Judy Moore; a daughter-in-law, Montrolia Moore; and five sons-in-law, Charlie Ward, William Gross, James Hall, Robert Tyus and Kelsey Robinson. Born July 12, 1905, at Paint Creek, she was the daughter of the late Robert Lee and Mary Alice Barringer Slack. Mrs. Peters spent her childhood in Kanawha County. She came to Raleigh County in 1920, settling on South Kanawha Street, where she was the owner and operator of John Peters General Store. An active member of Memorial Baptist Church, she was a member of the Bible Study Group and Sunshine Sunday School Class. She was a past officer of the Order of the Eastern Star, Bethlehem Chapter 71, and held memberships in the Judea Shrine, Pythian Sisters, Degree of Honor and Rebekah Lodge at Mabscott and Beckley. She was preceded in death by her husband, John E. Peters, on Oct. 20, 1968; a grandson, John Stover, in 1993; and three brothers, George, Garnet and Robert Slack. Survivors include two daughters, June Cumbo of Toledo, Ohio, and Mary Stover and her husband, Dorsey, of Austin, Texas; two sons, John L. Peters and his wife, Marlene, of Garden Valley, Tenn., and Robert E. Peters and his wife, Audrey, of Toledo; nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Born Oct. 5, 1904, in Ivanhoe, Va., she was a daughter of the late Miles Standish and Mary Elizabeth White Weatherman. Mrs. Rotenberry was born in Wythe County, Va. She was a homemaker, a member of First United Methodist Church, Beckley, and the United Methodist Women. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ira C. Rotenberry. Survivors include two daughters, Norma Jean Reynolds and her husband, William, of South Charleston and Mrs. Jo Ann Rorrer of Bristol, Tenn.; three sisters, Mrs. Madge Branscome, Mrs. Haswell Stoots and Mrs. Guy Baker, all of Wytheville, Va.; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was born Aug. 12, 1920, in Des Moines, Iowa. Dr. Wurst was a member of Ewing Creek Apostolic Church, Clear Creek, and a U.S. Army veteran from 1944 until 1949 when he served in World War II. He graduated from Des Moines Still College of Osteopathy and Surgery on Aug. 21, 1952. On Aug. 23, 1952, Dr. Wurst received an order from the State Board of Osteopathy. Dr. Wurst practiced medicine from 1952 until 1984. He was a life member of the American Osteopathic Association. Dr. Wurst was also a member of Psi Sigma Alpha fraternity, the Sierra Club, Beckley Elks Lodge No. 1452, MacDonald Warren Masonic Lodge No. 103 AF & AM, Beni Kedem Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. of Charleston and 32 Degree Scottish Rite Freemasonry. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Wurst; and a daughter, Dianna Arthur. Mrs. Young spent her childhood at Ronceverte, where she attended Teaberry Baptist Church and graduated from Greenbrier High School, Class of 1950. She was a 15-year resident of Lester, coming from Lynchburg, Va. An active member of Lester Baptist Church, she lived by the belief "It is better to give than receive." She will be missed by her family and friends. Mrs. Young was preceded in death by a son, Paul; eight brothers and two sisters.
