Register Herald Obituaries for January 30, 2000 William H. Bowyer BLUEFIELD - Retired Master Sgt. William H. Bowyer, 78, formerly of Union, was carried away from this life in the arms of heaven's angels to spend eternity with Jesus on Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, while being lovingly held in the caring arms of Mary Catherine Brooks Bowyer, his faithful and dedicated wife of 53 years. Born in Sinks Grove, he was a son of the late Ernest Shields and Julia Ratliff Bowyer. He retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years of honorable service, including four tours of duty with the 101st Airborne Division Pathfinders Unit of Fort Bragg, N.C. During World War II, he served in the European Theater and was engaged in the invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He was highly decorated for his heroic actions during his time of service. Other appointments included 12 years' service at Fort Jackson, S.C., as small arms instructor, and a chauffeur for Gen. Mark Clark at The Citadel in Charleston, S.C. He served a two-year tour at Smiley Barracks in Karlshrue, Germany. After his retirement from military service, he and his family made their home in Union, where they raised registered Herefords. He was a member of New Lebanon A.R.P. Church, Sinks Grove. He had resided in Bluefield for the past 11 years. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Helen Wilson; a brother, Dennis; and a grandson, Christopher Fisher. Other survivors include two daughters, Sheila Fisher Kline and her husband, Barry, of Bluefield and Linda Caywood of Princeton; four grandchildren, Jerry Fisher and his wife, Hope, of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Jeff Caywood and his wife, Romy, of Bluefield and Jay Caywood and Leslie Marie Bowyer, both of Princeton; four brothers, James and Richard Bowyer, both of Fairlea, Hoover Bowyer of Lewisburg and George Bowyer of Austin, Texas; and six sisters, Mabel Tolley of Gap Mills, Mary Brooks of Lewisburg, Ruth Tuzzolino of Schenectady, N.Y., Eva Reed of Peterstown, Margaret Roach of Rainelle and Adel Qualls of Alderson. Others who will greatly miss him include John N. Caywood of Peterstown, Lori Gadd Bowyer of Princeton and Gerald R. Fisher of Wilkes-Barre, Pa. A celebration of his life will be 2 p.m. Monday at Greenbrier Memorial Gardens, Lewisburg, with Pastor Tim Boyd officiating. Entombment will follow. The U.S. Army Honor Guard from Fort Knox, Ky., will perform full military honors. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Union Gospel Mission in Bluefield. Lucille Isabella Griffith WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS - Lucille Isabella Allen Griffith, 80, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, at her home following an extended illness. "Papa Bear" McAlpine, 52, of Glen Daniel, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born June 25, 1947, in Princewick, he was a son of the late Paul McAlpine and Hazel Carr McAlpine. Mr. McAlpine was a former lab technician for Raleigh General Hospital and a member of the Church of God of Beckley. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles McAlpine. Survivors include his wife, Linda Hancock McAlpine; a son, James McAlpine of Charleston; two stepsons, Jeffery Kernshner of Baltimore and Frederick Kernshner of Naoma; three stepdaughters, Melissa Conn of Naoma, Rachael Brown of Statesville, N.C., and Rosemary Kernshner of Glen Daniel; three brothers, Barney and Frank McAlpine, both of Princewick, and Paul McAlpine Jr. of Owings, Md.; a sister, Rose Adams of Alpine, Calif.; and seven grandchildren. McCourt, 69, of 368 Park Ridge Drive, Beckley, formerly of Upperglade, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, at a Raleigh County hospital following an extended illness. Born June 18, 1930, in Webster County, he was a son of the late Harley and Angrelina McCourt. Mr. McCourt was a Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict, a member of the American Legion in Cowen and resided most of his life in Webster County. He had been employed as a maintenance technician with the Webster County Board of Education and belonged to United Pentecostal Church in Webster Springs. Survivors include his wife, Jimmie Mae McCourt; two daughters, Lorie Meadows and Colleen McCourt, both of Beckley; a son, Ronald McCourt of LaGrange, Ohio; three sisters, Edna Clutter and Ida Green, both of Webster Springs, and Georgia Miller of Rosedale; two brothers, Arnold McCourt of Webster Springs and Jack McCourt; and three grandchildren. "Margie" McGraw, 75, died at 7:31 a.m. Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, in a Greenbrier County hospital following a long illness. Born Dec. 22, 1924, in Ronceverte, she was a daughter of the late Vincent S. and Mary Sue Bowden Neely. Mrs. McGraw lived most of her life in Summers County and was a member of Greenbrier Primitive Baptist Church of Pipestem. She was a retired employee of Maidenform Corp. of Princeton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Lee McGraw, in 1997; two brothers and two sisters. Survivors include two daughters, Deborah Butler of Pipe-stem and Drema Keaton of Bluefield; two grandsons, Chris Bulter and his wife, Angie, of Pipestem and Jason Keaton and his wife, Natalie, of Princeton; two granddaughters, Melissa Driver and her husband, David, of Princeton and Suzanna Peters and her husband, Donald, of Seven Springs, N.C.; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Charles Neely of Pipestem and Norman "Jack" Neely of Cincinnati; and a sister, Ramona "Joy" McGraw of Richmond, Va. Redden, 61, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, at his daughter's home on Loops Road in Rainelle following a short illness. Born July 29, 1938, in Spring Dale, he was a son of the late Basil and Velda Gill Redden. Mr. Redden was a member of Spring Dale Church of Christ. Survivors include two sons, Richard D. and his wife, Steph-anie, of Rainelle, and Jesse D. of Sturgis, Mich.; three daughters, Karen Martin and her husband, Jerry, of Rainelle, Beverly Redden and her companion, Steve Cool, of Rainelle and Deanna Crookshanks of Danese; three brothers, Benny of Rainelle, Raymond and his wife, Genevee, of Danese, and Gary and his wife, Sue, of Meadow Bridge; three sisters, Betty Jo Redden of Oxford, Ohio, Rita Plum and her husband, Cameron, of Fairmont and Rebecca Akers and her husband, John, of Meadow Bridge; and seven grandchildren, Jerry Martin Jr., Jason and Jessica Martin, Adam, Ashley, Dareke Redden, and Samantha Crookshanks. Born Dec. 9, 1912, in Princeton, he was a son of the late Thomas Richard "T.R." and Nora Ann Akers White. Mr. White was a retired locomotive engineer with Norfolk & Western Railroad. He retired following an injury in 1965 with 29 years of service and worked most of his years out of Elmore. He was a member of Highland Avenue Baptist Church, Mullens, where he formerly served as deacon and trustee. He was a member and past president of the Mullens Lions Club. He was the founder of the Wyoming County Sheltered Workshop. He served on Mullens City Council for 12 years and was mayor of Mullens from 1991 to 1995. He had been a resident of Mullens since 1931, moving from Princeton. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Arleta Meador White; a brother, Basil White; and three sisters, Ruth Fisher, Ethel Backus and Mildred Wingo. Survivors include a daughter, Karyl White Warren and her husband, Thomas, of Ocala, Fla.; a son, Emory V. "Butch" White Jr. of Lewisburg; two grandchildren, Thomas E. Warren and Amy L. Warren; two great-grandsons; two brothers, Earl White and his wife, Mar-tha, of Max Meadows, Va., and Harold O. White and his wife, Wanda, of Mullens; and special friend, Buena Cook of Mullens. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Highland Avenue Baptist Church, Mullens, with the Revs. Mike Toler and Phillip Smith officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
