Register Herald Obituaries for January 31, 2000 Rosie Smith Burgess ALBEMARLE, N.C. - Mrs. Rosie Elizabeth Smith Burgess, 90, formerly of Oak Hill, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, at the Stanly Nursing Home, Albemarle, following a long illness. Born Oct. 16, 1909, in Oak Hill, Mrs. Burgess was a homemaker and member of the Assembly of God Church of Oak Hill. She was preceded in death by her husband, Emory Jackson Burgess, and parents, Frank and Roxie Lucas Smith. Survivors include five daughters, Betty Sandridge and Nancy Gaber, both of Harrisonburg, Va.; Ann Montgomery of Hamilton, Ohio, Kay York and Fran Poplin of Albemarle, N.C.; five sons, Cletus and Jim Burgess, both of Ashtubulah, Ohio, Clint and Ernest Burgess, both of Columbus, Ohio, and Emory J. Burgess Jr. of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; 34 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren. Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Tyree Funeral Chapel, Oak Hill, with the Revs. Louie Stegel and Ruddell Bloomfield officiating. Burial will follow at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill. Allen Griffith WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS - Lucille Isabella Allen Griffith, 80, died Saturday, Jan. 28, 2000, at her residence following an extended illness. Born April 27, 1919, in White Sulphur Springs, she was the eldest daughter of Will and Ida Church Allen. She was a devout homemaker and devoted mother of six sons and five daughters. She was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith and raised her family in that church for many years. She was known by numerous people throughout the community as "Momma." In addition to her parents, Mrs. Griffith was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Griffith; a son, Bernard; two infant children, James and Donna; and two sisters, Marguerite Allen McCartney and Mildred Allen Traynor. Survivors include four sons, Baxter at home, Baxter Wayne of Geneva, Ohio, Larry of White Sulphur Springs and Harvey of Callaghan, Va.; four daughters, Betty Craft and Sandra Griffith of White Sulphur Springs, Linda Perry of Neola and Marguerite Walkup of Renick; two brothers, Robert Allen and Billy Allen both of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; a sister, Rosalee Hoke of Fayetteville, N.C.; a foster son, C.H. Mann of White Sulphur Springs; 20 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, four foster grandchildren, one foster great-grandchild and a host of beloved nephews, nieces and cousins. Services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Pentecostal Holiness Church in White Sulphur Springs, with the Revs. Gene Sizemore and Reginald Berry officiating. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery, White Sulphur Springs. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs, and at the residence of Mrs. Griffith on Dry Creek Road at any time. Members of the White Sulphur Springs Rescue Squad will serve as active and honorary pallbearers. Memorials may be made to the Food Pantry of the White Sulphur Springs Pentecostal Holiness Church in care of the Rev. Gene Sizemore or the Family Refuge Center in Lewisburg.
