Adkins, 57, of 4080 Oak Drive, N.W., formerly of Beaver, died Monday, June 28, 1999, at his home following an apparent heart attack. Born March 15, 1942, inBeaver, he was the son of Julious L. Adkins of Beaver and the late Vera Redden Adkins. Mr. Adkins a self-employed retailer, a member of the Masonic Lodge in Auburndale, Fla., and a Navy veteran. He was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Lon and Ada Redden. Survivors include his wife, Christine Altice Adkins of Winter Haven, Fla.; two sons, Mark Adkins of St. Cloud, and Michael Adkins of Tampa, Fla.; a daughter, Melenie Gassert of Kissimmee, Fla.; a sister, Cindy Meador of Hepdzibah, Ga.; and four grandchildren, Madison Adkins and Mitchel Adkins and Douglas and Dustin Gassert. Bumgarner VICTOR ­ Sharon Marie Bumgarner, 51, died Wednesday, June 30, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born July 26, 1947, in Lakeville, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Ethel Ellis Whitelock. Mrs. Bumgarner was a 11-year resident of Victor, was of the Methodist faith, and was a homemaker. Survivors include her husband, Alan Bumgarner of Victor; a daughter, Jessica Bumgarner of Victor; a son, Eric Bumgarner of Victor; and a brother, Brian Whitelock of Morgantown. Services will be 8 p.m. Saturday at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home, Ansted, with the Rev. Roy Gene Crist officiating. The body will be cremated. Butler, 75, of 625 Mango Drive, formerly of Hinton, died Monday, June 28, 1999, in a Virginia Beach care center following a long illness. Born Nov. 2, 1923, in Hinton, he was the son of the late John and Maude Butler. After the deaths of his parents, while still a young boy, he moved into the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Goff of Hinton. Mr. Butler was a 27-year veteran of the U.S. Navy where he attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He served his country throughout World War II in the Pacific, and was the recipient of numerous commendations. After his retirement from the Navy, he worked for 10 years for the U.S. Postal Service in the Norfolk, Va. area. Survivors include his wife, Hazel Maynor Butler; and a daughter, Susan and her two sons, Michael and Todd. Memorial services were Thursday, July 1, 1999 in Virginia Beach. Curry MOUNT HOPE ­ Georgia A. Saunders Curry, 83, formerly of Beckwith, departed this life on Monday, June 28, 1999, in the Pine Lodge Nursing Home, Beckley, following a short illness. Born July 10, 1915, in Nicholas County, she was the daughter of the late James and Pearl Shelton Saunders. Ms. Curry was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church, Mount Hope. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph R. Curry; a son, Joe Louis Curry; and two brothers, Gene and James Saunders. Survivors include two daughters, Josephine P. Lane and her husband, Rainell, of Rochester, N.Y., and Ruth G. Wheeler and her husband, Russell, of Mount Hope; two sisters, Gertrude Drake of Fayetteville, and Elizabeth Britton of Fayetteville; 17 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; 13 nieces and 11 nephews. Hatcher Flora Caroline Smith Hatcher, 92, of Mabscott, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, June 30, 1999, following a long illness. Born Sept. 8, 1906, in Asbury, Greenbrier County, she was the daughter of the late Jasper and Maggie Dosier Smith. Mrs. Hatcher was a homemaker, and the second oldest charter member of the MacArthur Church of God, where she was active for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Arnold Hatcher on May 24, 1976; four brothers, the Rev. Merle Smith, the Rev. Harry Smith, Eldridge Smith and the Rev. Herbert Smith; three sisters, Georgie Smith Egnor, Carrie Smith Justice and Nellie Smith Lilly; a son, Arnold G. Hatcher; a daughter, Mary Hatcher Greene; three grandchildren, Ronald and Donald Greene and William "Larry" Hatcher; one great-grandchild, Eddie Lee Hampton Jr.; and one daughter-in-law, Deborah Sue Sears Hatcher. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Sandra Hicks; four brothers, Basil, Alex, Lee and Fletcher Martin; and five sisters, Nora Gillenwater, Mabel Tucker, Lura Martin, Ada Gillenwater and Nannie Whiting. Miller DAMASCUS, Md. ­ Elizabeth Ann Miller, 69, died Wednesday, June 30, 1999, in the Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. Born July 20, 1929, in Minden, she was the daughter of the late John and Mabel Jones Thomson. Mrs. Miller held a degree in business administration. She began her career as a typing and shorthand teacher at the high school in Parsons, W.Va. She had worked as a bookkeeper for about 10 years at Damascus Courier now the Damascus Gazette Newspaper. She was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Damascus. Survivors include her husband, H. Vance Miller; two sons, Hugh Miller of Manassas, Va., and Tom Miller of Reston, Va.; two granddaughters, Jean Miller and Vivienne Miller; a sister, Marion Pritchard of Clarksville, Va.; and a brother, Robert Thomas of Charleston, S.C. Born May 28, 1962, in Beckley, she was the daughter of Ruth Matherly Lilly of Daniels and the late Zelmar Loraine Lilly Sr. Mrs. Smith was a lifelong resident of Daniels and was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Swepston was employed by CSX. He was a member of the Baptist Temple and an avid outdoorsman. He spent his summers in the Beckley area. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Alfred Hinkle and special uncle, Bud Lowe.
