Register Herald Obituaries for July 5, 1999 Friedrich E. Busemann Dr. Friedrich Ernst Busemann, 93, of Beckley, died Friday, July 2, 1999, in a Beckley care facility following a long illness. Born Aug. 10, 1905, in Antwerp, Belgium, he was the son of the late Dr. Friedrich E. and Frau Trude Busemann. Dr. Busemannšs family had to return to Germany in 1914, where he ended his education with a Ph.D. in metallurgy in 1933 from the University of Breslau. He was employed by various metallurgical companies in Germany, as well as in England. He immigrated to the USA in 1933, where he was married to Edith Watts Busemann in June 1935. He was affiliated with the International Nickel Company as well as E. I. Dupont Company either in metal production and or strictly research. After moving to Tucson, Ariz., he was self-employed as a consultant in the field of metallurgy. He was a member of the Arizona Academy of Science as well as the Western Historical Society. His hobby, besides photography, was to inform himself of the historical background, religion and actual living conditions of the Western American Indian. As a volunteer worker for Southern Arizona Red Cross blood program, he was awarded a certificate as a life member of the Board of Directors of the Tucson Chapter of the American Red Cross. He and his wife were members of the Beckley Presbyterian Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Watts Busemann. Survivors include one sister, Annelise Von Hermann of Rottach, Germany, and one niece, Lilo Pirk and her husband Hans of Rottach, Germany. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Beckley Presbyterian Church Chapel with the Rev. Robert W. Debnam officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Watts Carson family plot in Spring Hill Cemetery, Huntington. Jackson Jr., 80, of Coal City, died Friday, July 2, 1999 in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born Aug. 2, 1918, in New Castle, Va., he was the son of the late John H. Sr. and Ada Downey Jackson. Mr. Jackson was disabled and a member of Coal City Freewill Baptist Church, Coal City. He was preceded in death by one brother, Carl Jackson. Survivors include three sisters, Eva Woodrum of Dawes, Muriel Clere of Sharon and Juanita Payne of Eskdale. James Garnet Johnson James Garnet Johnson, 82, of Bradley, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, July 3, 1999, following a long illness. Born Feb. 21, 1917, in Kanawha County, he was the son of the late James and Norma May Price Johnson. Mr. Johnson was a retired coal miner and attended Cranberry Community Church. He was a member of the UMWA Local No. 7086, District No. 29. He was preceded in death by his wife, Macel Jean Elswick Johnson and one brother, Granville Johnson. Survivors include Edith Johnson of Daniels; two sons, Lewis M. Johnson of La Mirado, Calif. and Jame G. Johnson Jr. and his wife Brenda of Madison, N.C.; seven daughters, Anna Barley and her husband Robert of Bradley with whom he made his home for the past 10 years, Rebecca Evans of Beaver, Tammy Lee and her husband Tim of Beckley, Almeda Loudermilk and her husband Lawrence of Dennison, Ohio, Annette Bowles of Ormand Beach, Fla., Brenda Hadzenyez and husband George of Ormand Beach, Fla. and Stona Lilly and husband Dr. Lindsey Lilly of Pueblo, Co.; two sisters, Mary Blake of Carrollton, Ohio and Helen Ailene Evans French of Joliet, Ill.; 28 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren. Arrangements by Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley. Edith Kessel Edith Shumate Kessel, 94, of Harper Road, Beckley, died Friday, July 2, 1999, in a Charleston hospital following a short illness. Born Dec. 3, 1904, in Maple Meadow, she was the daughter of the late John Newton and Lennie Snuffer Shumate. Mrs. Kessel spent her childhood at Maple Meadow. She had been a resident of Harper Road since 1939. She was a long time member of the First Lydia Light Circle, and was active in the kindergarten dept. of the church for over 50 years. A volunteer at The Veterans Area Medical Center of Beckley for over thirty years she had 4,500 hours of volunteer work. In 1983 she was inducted in the VA Hall of Fame for many years of devotion to the VA hospital. Mrs. Kessel was also affiliated with the American Red Cross. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Kessel. Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy Calderwood of Charleston and Sandra Haldane and husband George of Atlanta; a son, Dwight Kessel and his wife Gloria of Knoxville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren and eight grandchildren; four brothers, Sherman Shumate of Ghent, Glenn Shumate of Maple Meadow, Vanious Shumate of Mabscott and Wilford Shumate of Marlington. Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church, 422 Neville St., with the Dr. David Carrico officiating. Entombment will follow in the Sunset Memorial Mausoleum. Born Nov. 11, 1908, in Camden, Ala., she was the daughter of the late Robert Hawkins and Emma Daley Hawkins. Ms. Reed was a homemaker and a member of the Mount Zion Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sandell Reed in 1976, one son, Arthur Reed and one grandson, Arthur Lawson in 1990. Survivors include one son, James A. Reed of Bronx, N.Y.; one daughter, Carrie G. Lawson of Beckley; one sister, Ruby L. Jordan of Beckley; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Rhodes, 86, of Wyco, died Saturday, July 3, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born Aug. 28, 1912, in Premier, he was the son of the late Charles and Bessie Kirk Rhodes. Mr. Rhodes was a lifelong resident of Wyco and a member of Welton Chapel at Allen Junction. He was a retired coal miner, having worked for Amigo Smokeless with 46 years of service. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Neely Rhodes. Survivors include one daughter, Cheryl Bullington and her husband Joe of Wyco; two sons, Gene Rhodes and his wife Shirley of Rittman, Ohio, and Gary Rhodes and his wife Beth of Pineville; five sisters, Margaret Lawrence and Sally Cash both of Virginia, Irene Harper of Hamilton, Ohio, Betty Greene of Mullens and Shelby Roberts of Wooster, Ohio; one brother, Billy Rhodes of Va.; and six grandchildren, Eric and Tim Rhodes, Lori Glazier, Gary Rhodes Jr., Adam Rhodes and Tyler Bullington and two great grandchildren, Alex and Clayton Glazier. Trickett, 101, formerly of Morgantown, died Saturday, July 3, 1999, at a Buckhannon nursing facility. Born March 1, 1898, in Halleck, he was the son of the late Edson and Alice Hartzell Trickett. Mr. Trickett was a member of the Vandalia United Methodist Church in Roanoke and a former member of the Spruce Street United Methodist Church of Morgantown. He was employed for 42 years for Lough and Simpson Wholesalers in Morgantown. When the company was sold to Creasy Company of Clarksburg, he moved to Bridgeport and continued working for the company until his retirement at age 65. He was also the last surviving member of his family which included 14 children which included 2 sets of twins. Mr. Trickett was a twin himself. He was preceded in death by his wife Nellie Mae Eddy Trickett whom he married Feb. 5, 1926; five brothers; eight sisters; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Survivors include a son, Robert E. Trickett of Westover; three daughters, Thelma Jarrell and Beatrice Trickett both of Roanoke and Doris Webb of Naomi; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was retired from G. C. Murphy Co. and a long time employee of Farris Department Store, Beckley. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cordell Way and one daughter, Shirley E. Handley. Survivors include five sons, Bill Way and his wife Mary Margaret of Sprague, Jimmy Way and his wife Victoria of Beckley, Robert Way and his wife Betty of Medina, Ohio, Johnny Way and his wife Jackie of Crab Orchard and Jerry Way and his wife Diane of Easley, S.C.; one son in law, Wayne Handley of Shady Spring; one sister, Thelma Rickett of Daytona Beach, Fla.; 15 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.
