Baker, 74, formerly of Frankford, died 10:30 p.m. Sunday, July 4, 1999, in a Fairlea medical center following an apparent heart attack. Born Nov. 10, 1924, in Renick, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Ida Blankenship Baker. Mrs. Baker was a lifelong resident of Greenbrier County, and she was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church at Lewisburg. She was a retired care giver and a member of the American Association of Retired Persons. Survivors include a daughter, Phyllis Childers and her husband, Jerry, of Princeton; a brother, Charles Baker of Frankford; a sister, Martha B. Baker of Fairlea; two grandchildren, Dwayne Childers and Pamela Brooks; and a great-grandson, Evan Brooks, all of Princeton. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Frankford Chapel of McCraw Funeral Home, with the Rev. Youel Altizer officiating. Burial will follow in the Frankford Cemetery. Gladys Pearl Brooks LOGAN - Gladys Pearl Brooks, 77, died 2:10 p.m. Sunday, July 4, 1999, in a Logan hospital following a long illness. Born Sept. 10, 1921, in Wyoming County, she was the daughter of the late Bert D. Canterbury and Nancy Stennett Canterbury. Mrs. Brooks was a homemaker and a 15-year employee of Raleigh Wyoming Mining Co. in Glen Rogers. She was a 34-year resident of Logan and was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by a brother, R. Jack Canterbury; and two sisters, Ruth C. Greer and Berna Harvey. Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Jarvey Brooks; a special person, David Vance, who was like a son to Mrs. Brooks, and his wife, Dee, and daughter, Kathryn, all of Logan; a brother, Tom Canterbury and his wife, Jane, of Daniels; three sisters, Marie Canterbury and Madeline Beaver, both of Beckley, and Georgia Powell and her husband, Joe L., of Decatur, Ga.; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Junior and Mary Vance, Delilah Adkins, Pearl Newman and Blanche Shanklin. Graveside rites will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, with Pastor Robert Jennings and a special friend, the Rev. George Graham, officiating. There will be no visitation. Arrangements by Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Beckley. Rosella E. Garrett Rosella E. Garrett, 86, of Beaver, died 6 a.m. Monday, July 5, 1999, in a Beckley care center following a long illness. Born June 6, 1913, in Blue Jay, she was the daughter of Alice M. Morrow, who is 104 years of age and presently residing in a local nursing home, and the late John Garrett. Mrs. Garrett attended Shady Spring High School, was a homemaker most of her life and was of the Lutheran faith. Other survivors include a brother, Robert J. Keaton and his wife, Veronica, of Beckley; and four nieces. Services will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel with Pastor Edward Garten officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley. Friends may call one hour before the services Wednesday at the funeral home. Holmes James Horatio Holmes, 89, of 141 Hager St., Beckley, died Saturday, July 3, 1999, in a Beckley medical center following a long illness. Born March 8, 1910, in Pea Ridge, he was the son of the late George W. and Sarah Tompkins Holmes. Mr. Holmes was a member of Central Baptist Church, serving on the deacon board and being a member of the Men's Chorus. He earned his B.S. degree from West Virginia State College and his master's degree from Pittsburgh University. He was a member of the Kapp Alpha Psi fraternity. He taught school in Fayette County for several years. Mr. Holmes was a licensed real estate brooker and appraiser and served on the Real Estate Board of Realtors in Beckley. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He was preceded in death by three brothers, George, John and Frank Holmes; two sisters, Geraldine McDonald and Ollive Rotan; two nephews, Oliver and John Holmes; and a niece, Jacqueline. Survivors include his wife, Lois Harbison Holmes; two daughters, Brooke Holmes and Sarah L. Davis and her husband, Gerod, of Beckley; two sons, Walter T. Robinson and his wife, Linda, of St. Albans, and Curtis Robinson of Beckley; 10 grandchildren, Erin, Tyler, Andrew, Roderick and Cameron Davis, Tabetha and Jeshua Robinson, Demond, Curtaz and Corina Robinson, all of Beckley; three nephews, Edward and Joseph McDonald of Anchorage, Alaska, and Paul Holmes of Columbus, Ohio; four nieces, Eunice Camp of Statesville, N.C., Olive Malone of Cleveland, Grace Brody of Philadelphia, and Blanche Holmes of Columbus, Ohio; and a host of other relatives and friends. Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Central Baptist Church, Beckley, with the Revs. Robert I. Brown and Walter T. Robinson officiating. McKay PALM CITY, Fla. - Frances W. Haldane McKay, 79, formerly of Beckley, died Sunday, July 4, 1999, at her home. Born in Lexington, Va., she had been a resident of Palm City 14 years, coming from Beckley. Prior to her retirement, she had been a librarian with the Raleigh County Library in Beckley for more than 20 years. She received her associate's degree from Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Va. She was an associate member of the Palm City Presbyterian Church and a member of the Martin Downs Country Club, Palm City, Fla. She was preceded in death by her first husband, George M. Haldane. Survivors include her husband, John S. McKay; a daughter, Mary Haldane Johnson of Manassas, Va.; two sons, George M. Haldane III and his wife, Sandra, of Douglasville, Ga., and Charles W. Haldane and his wife, Sandra, of Tampa, Fla.; five stepsons, David McKay of Atlanta, Michael McKay of Leesburg, Va., Jeffrey McKay of Gaithersburg, Md., David Ray Rice of Baltimore, Md., and Loren Rice of Beckley; a brother, Caryle Wade of Greenville, N.C.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Robinson OAK HILL - Rodney D. Robinson, 35, formerly of Skelton, departed this life Friday, July 2, 1999. Born July 17, 1963, in Newport, R.I., he was the son of the Rev. William Robinson of Beckley and the late Rose Marie Reid Robinson. Mr. Robinson was a 1981 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School; he later attended WVIT in Montgomery. He was an avid sportsman and athlete while at WWHS, where he excelled in football, as well as in baseball. He was a three-year veteran of the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany for most of his enlisted time. He attended the West Virginia State Police Academy in Institute, and he was employed as senior trooper for the Oak Hill Detachment of the West Virginia State Police for seven years. He was well respected throughout the community and was very interested in guiding and coaching area youth toward the athletic arena. He coached Little League Baseball, Babe Ruth Baseball and Midget League Football. He was instrumental in the organization of an annual state trooper basketball tournament in Oak Hill as a fund-raiser to benefit two state troopers who were seriously injured in an automobile accident. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Hudson Reid; and his paternal grandmother, Gladys Redman. Other survivors include two sons, Steven and Rodney; two daughters, LaToia and Britton Victoria; a sister, Lisa Hairston and her husband, Harold, of Beckley; a brother, William Robinson and his wife, Lynn, of Beckley; nieces, Kristle, Ashley, Jennifer, Syreeta and Moriah; nephews, Jonathan and Shawn; his stepmother, Yolanda "Peggy" Robinson; two stepsisters, Marlene Hackett and her husband, James, and Margaret Njoku and her husband, Martin; a stepbrother, Marvin Wright; aunts, Mary Smith, Clarice Robinson, Jacqueline Reid, Mary Reid, Frances Montgomery and Cortez Scalest; uncles, Lorenizo Reid, Sherman Beasley, Charles Robinson, and James Reid; several great-aunts and great-uncles; two great-great-aunts; a special friend, Sgt.
