Kessinger, 86, of 229 East Prince St., Beckley, died 7:10 a.m., Wednesday, July 7, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born July 3, 1913, in Beckley, he was the son of the late Clisby Theodore Kessinger and Chloe Alice Dejarnette Kessinger. Mr. Kessinger was a retired employee of the Beckley Water Company where he served for 38 years, and Home Insurance Agency where he served for 10 years. He was a lifelong resident of Beckley and a member of the First Christian Church of Beckley. Throughout his life, he was a leader in local civic affairs. He was recognized as the Outstanding Citizen of Beckley in 1981. He was founding director of the New River Travel Council, serving as president for 20 years, founding director of Theater West Virginia, chairman of the Beckley Recreation Board and developed the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine. He was president of the Rural Development Council, director of the Raleigh County-Beckley Chamber of Commerce, and president of the Beckley Civitan Club. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Kessinger and William E. Kessinger. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Nellie Jones Kessinger; a son, James Robert Kessinger of Glendale, Calif.; two brothers, Ted Kessinger and his wife, Peggy, of Davisville, and George "Ed" Kessinger of Lorain, Ohio; and a sister, June Jones of Crab Orchard. Liptrap COLUMBUS, Ohio - India Anna Smith Liptrap, 87, formerly of Thurmond, died Wednesday, July 7, 1999, in a Pinkerington, Ohio, care center following a long illness. Born Dec. 9, 1911, in Sanger, she was the daughter of the late James and Prudence Light Smith. Mrs. Liptrap was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Brown Liptrap; a son, John David Liptrap; a brother, Amon Smith; and three sisters, Lannie Newton, Winnie West and Mamie Smith. Survivors include a son, James Liptrap and his wife, Joann, of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; two daughters, Elizabeth Jean Hurt and her husband, Frank, of Columbus, Ohio, and Ethel Irene Brown and her husband, John, of Middleburg, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Tyree Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Bill Menefee officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill. Patricia 'Patty' Lucas Paricia "Patty" Dean Jarrell Lucas, 67, of Glen Daniel, died Thursday, July 8, 1999, in a Charleston hospital following a short illness. Arrangements by Melton Mortuary, Beckley. Caesar J. Reid Caesar J. Reid, 85, of Raleigh, died Wednesday, July 7, 1999, in a Charleston medical center following a short illness. Born April 3, 1914, in Dunns, he was the son of the late James and Elsie Meadows Reid. Mr. Reid was a retired coal miner and a member of the UMWA Local 6610, District 29. He worked for 43 years in the coal industry, last working for Westmoreland Coal Company at Wyco before retiring in 1971. He was a member of the Raleigh Community Church. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Shelby Carol Farmer; an infant son, Phillip Allen Reid; a grandson, Jay D. Farmer; six brothers, Leonard, George, Basil, John, Lance and Roy Reid; and two sisters, Florence Waselchalk and Susan Young. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Vera Eileen Hedrick Reid; two sons, Gary Reid of Raleigh, and Lake Reid of Gastonia, N.C.; three daughters, Nancy Bowers of San Antonio, Texas, Joy Hite of Grover, N.C., and Sandra Christensen of Spring Valley, Ill.; a brother, Leslie Reid of Stotesbury; two sisters, Ruth Otey of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Esta Brogan of Knoxville, Tenn.; 21 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. "Fred" Sears, 79, died Wednesday, July 7, 1999, from injuries received in an automobile accident on Route 3 near Hinton. Born Nov. 25, 1919, in Summers County, he was the son of the late John Allen and Sarah Caroline Bennett Sears. Mr. Sears was a lifelong resident of Summers County and a retired track laborer for the C&O Railroad Company. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth McCloud Cales Sears; a son, Frankie Adkins; a stepson, Jennings Cales; and nine brothers and sisters. Survivors include three sisters, Lottie Parker, Norma Garten and Dorothy Adkins; a brother, Paul Sears, all of Talcott; a stepson, Glendon Cales of Hilldale; a stepdaughter, Florence Cales; and several nieces and nephews. Born Sept. 29, 1911, in Glen Rogers, she was the daughter of the late Joda G. and Rosa Jane Farmer Cook. Mrs. Swim was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Amos V. Swim in 1979; and three brothers, Willie Chaffin Cook, Willard Verdun Cook and Dempsey Arigone Cook. Survivors include a son, Bobby R. Swim of Glen Fork; a sister, Norma C. Green of Welch-Pineville Road, and a nephew, Greg Cook of Ohio. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Evans and Evans Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Young Jr. Edward Price Young Jr., 78, of 108 East C St., Beckley, died 8:08 p.m., Wednesday, July 7, 1999, in a Princeton hospital following a short illness. Born May 10, 1921, in Madison, he was the son of the late Edward Price Young and Leona Barker Young Mitchem. Mr. Young was a retired machinist for Gunter's Electric Inc. and a former auto body mechanic for Bay's Buick in Beckley. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Beckley, and a former member of the Beckley Moose Lodge. Mr. Young served with the Marine Corps in the South Pacific during World War II and was a member of the National Rifle Association. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Jean Gunter Young; a son, George Edward Young and his wife, Sharon, of Beckley; a daughter, Rebecca Jean Young of Lynchburg, Va.; a sister, Marianna Tolos and her husband, William, of Cincinnati, Ohio; and two grandchildren, April and Phillip Young of Beckley. Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel with Dr. David Carrico and Pastor Rollan Roberts officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum, Beckley.
