Register Herald Obituaries for July 10, 1999 Edith J. Coldiron Edith Jane Coldiron, 92, of Beckley, died Thursday, July 8, 1999, in a Beckley care center following a long illness. Born Feb. 18, 1907, in Bolt, she was the daughter of the late James and Etta Worley White. Mrs. Coldiron spent her childhood in Bolt. She moved to Dayton, Ohio, in 1958, and moved back to the Beckley area in 1985. She was a member of the Breckenridge Baptist Church, Bolt. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Roscoe Farmer, in July 1932; her second husband, Ambrose Charles Coldiron, in November 1954; three brothers, Preston, Lowell and Clinton Cleo White; three sisters, Hesper Thornton, Icie Price and Murel Swedburg; and a daughter-in-law, Rosemary Farmer. Survivors include a son, James T. Farmer, and a grandson, James R. Farmer, both of Cleveland; two sisters, Myrty White of Beckley and Emojean Ash of Bolt; and a longtime friend, Susan Clancy of Cleveland. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Dewey Lowe officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, Beckley. Gertrude Hawkins CRAWLEY - Gertrude "Peggy" Crane Hawkins, 100, died Thursday, July 8, 1999, in a Rainelle care center following a long illness. Born Jan. 20, 1899, in Crawley, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Stephen and Ida Collison Crane. Mrs. Hawkins was a homemaker and had been a resident of Crawley most of her life. She was a member of the Beaver Creek Baptist Church, Keiffer. She was preceded in death by her husband, E. Rockford Hawkins, in 1979; and two sons, C. Duward Hawkins in 1985 and Elmer R. Hawkins in 1989. Survivors include a son, David S. Hawkins of South Carolina; a daughter-in-law, C.D. (Bootz) Hawkins of Clintonville; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Donald Eugene Hood OCEANA - Donald Eugene Hood, 42, died Wednesday, July 7, 1999, at his home following a sudden illness. Born March 23, 1957, in Welch, he was the son of the late Jack Edward Hood and Ruth Paynter Hood. Mr. Hood was a coal miner. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack Edward Hood Jr. and Robert Lee Hood. Survivors include his wife, Sherry Lynn Lusk Hood; two sons, Brian and Trent Hood, both at home; a daughter, Rachel Hood of Clear Fork; eight brothers, Leo Paynter of Madison, Clyde Allan Hood of Maple Fork, Raymond Hood of North Carolina, Barry Dean Hood of Kopperston, Kenneth Hood of Huntington, David Hood of Maple Fork, Ray Hood of Mount Hope and Timmy Hood of Beckley; and three sisters, Jo Ann Dill of Hayside, Va., Margie Hood of Summersville and Beckey Doughton of North Carolina. Jones, 66, formerly of Beckley, died Wednesday, July 7, 1999, in a Los Angeles hospital following a long illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Cleo Hill; three sisters, Alberta Hale, Hattie Hill and Hilda Hill; and two brothers, Ernest and Albert Hill. Survivors include her husband, Bill Jones of New York; two daughters, Diana and Aletha Jones, both of Los Angeles; brothers and sisters-in-law, Loraine Jones and his wife, Juanita, of Beckley, Kenneth Borders and his wife, Lucy, of Beckley, Patricia Irving and Steve Jones, both of Columbus, Ohio, Lawrence Jones and Mattie Lane Walters, both of Beckley; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. Kessinger James B. Kessinger, 86, of 229 E. Prince St., Beckley, died 7:10 a.m. Wednesday, July 7, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born July 3, 1913, in Beckley, he was the son of the late Clisby Theodore Kessinger and Chloe Alice Dejarnette Kessinger. Mr. Kessinger was a lifelong resident of Beckley. He was a retired employee of the Beckley Water Company, serving for 38 years, and Home Insurance Agency where he served for 10 years. Throughout his life, he was a leader in civic affairs in southern West Virginia, especially in the development of tourism, the arts, and recreational facilities. He was founder of Theater Arts, serving as a director for 15 years. As a founder and 20-year president of the New River Travel Council, he promoted tourism in nine counties. As a director of the Beckley-Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce and chairman of the Park Committee, he helped develop many parks and facilities including the Little League baseball field, the city park, and Lewin Field, the recreation building, which was the primary gymnasium in Beckley for many years, New River Park and his personal favorite, the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine. As chairman of the Beckley Recreation Board, he led the successful passing of several levees for city parks. In addition, he served as president of the Beckley Civitan Club and was a deacon of the First Christian Church in Beckley, where he also was president of the Men's Bible Class. In 1971, he received the prestigious Bill Boone Tourism Award and in 1981 he was honored by the city of Beckley as the Outstanding Citizen of The Year. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Kessinger and William E. Kessinger. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Nellie Jones Kessinger; a son, James Robert Kessinger of Glendale, Calif.; two brothers, Ted Kessinger and his wife, Peggy, of Davisville, and George "Ed" Kessinger of Lorain, Ohio; and a sister, June Jones of Crab Orchard. Lewis RENICK - Audrie May Lewis, 86, died Friday, July 9, 1999, at her home following a long illness. Born April 27, 1913, in Cordova, she was the daughter of the late Newton and Maggie Poe Blake. Mrs. Lewis was a member of the Mount Herman United Methodist Church, Renick, and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Lewis, July 15, 1989. Patty Jarrell Lucas Patricia "Patty" Dean Jarrell Lucas, 67, of Glen Daniel, went to be with the Lord, Thursday, July 8, 1999, in a Charleston hospital following a short illness. Born March 3, 1932, at Edwight, she was the daughter of the late James R. and Garnet I. Chambers Jarrell. Mrs. Lucas spent her childhood in Glen Daniel and was a 1951 graduate of Trap Hill High School. She began her career in 1969 as a deputy assessor in the tax office at the Raleigh County Courthouse, retiring in 1987 after 17 years of service. Mrs. Lucas was a member of the Oak Grove Christian Church and was active with the Trap Hill Scholarship Fund and was involved in many Liberty High School fund-raising activities. She was honored by the Future Farmers of America as an Honorary Chapter Farmer for her many years of dedicated service. In her leisure time, she enjoyed politics and spending time with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Dawson Lee Lucas, in 1983; and a brother, James Harry Jarrell, in 1952. Survivors include a son, Dwight Douglas Lucas and his wife, Sherri, of Glen Daniel; a daughter, Debbie Murdock and her husband, Danny, of Beckley; four grandsons, Douglas Wayne, Dwight Dawson and Joseph Dwight Lucas and Bradley Adam Murdock; a granddaughter, Brittney Lee Murdock; a great-granddaughter, Rebecca Danielle; and her former husband, Dawson Lucas of Beckley. Born May 14, 1959, in Beckley, he was the son of Ernest Eugene and Glenna Jean Harper Underwood of Bradley. Mr. Underwood was self-employed and a retired business partner with American Campers. Born Feb. 5, 1962, in Welch, she was the daughter of the late David Clayton and Minnie Pearl Huffman. Mrs. Workman was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by a brother, Okie Osborne. Survivors include her lifemate, Mike Lamb; a son, Teddy Workman Jr. at home; three brothers, Clayton Huffman of Glen Fork, Arthur Huffman of Cleveland and Mike Huffman of Saulsville; six sisters, Lorraine Brown of Glen Fork, Vonda Dotson of Oceana, Sharon Huffman, Sandra Bolen of Bolt, Carolyn Jones of Canton, Ohio, and Judy Bolen of Florida; and two close friends, Juanita Crothers and Alice Ellis.
