Register Herald Obituaries for July 11, 1999 Alma V. Edwards ROCKVIEW ­ Alma V. Johnson Edwards, 86, died Friday, July 9, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born April 29, 1913, at Jenkinjones, she was the daughter of the late Thomas J. and Etta Fines Johnson. Mrs. Edwards was a homemaker, a member of the Rock Castle Baptist Church and a lifelong resident of Wyoming County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow W. Edwards; a son, Gordon P. Edwards; and three brothers, Paul, Posey and Luther Johnson. Survivors include two sons, Thomas C. Edwards and his wife, Mary Ann, of Rockview, and Robert E. Edwards and his wife, Nancy L., of Rockview; four brothers, Elmer Johnson of Corinne, Thomas C. Johnson of Lindside, and William C. and Willie S. Johnson, both of Rockview; two sisters, Lou May of Pineville and Etta Morgan of Colonial Beach, Va.; eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Services will be noon Monday at Rock Castle Baptist Church, with the Rev. Donald Adkins officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny. Friends may call 10:30 a.m. until time of the services Monday at the church. Grandsons and great-grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Arrangements by Calfee Funeral Service, Pineville. Howard Gates Howard Gates, 84, of Crab Orchard, died of natural causes Saturday, July 10, 1999, in a Beckley hospital. Born May 2, 1915, in Cleveland, Ohio, he was the son of the late Lewis and Anna Lyillayi Gates. Mr. Gates was a welder, mechanic and coal miner, retiring from Fairchild Manufacturing, and was a member of the UMWA. He was a member of the Crab Orchard Baptist Church and the Byrd Bible Class of the church for many years. Mr. Gates had been a resident of Raleigh County for more than 60 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude B. Gates, in April 1996; a brother, Charles Gates; and a sister, Frances Gates. Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Simms of Mabscott and Linda Gates of Lexington, Ky.; three sons, Billy Gates of Westerly, R.I., Charles Gates of Blountville, Tenn., and Orvale Gates of Appalachia, Va.; a brother, Victor Gates of Big Stone Gap, Va.; 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Calfee Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Phil Shields officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Chapel of Faith Mausoleum. Perdue PINEVILLE ­ Walter Gerald Perdue, 69, died Friday, July 9, 1999, at his home following a long illness. Born July 7, 1930, at Brenton, he was the son of the late Walter B. and Addie Webb Perdue. Mr. Perdue was retired from Ford Motor Co., was an Air Force veteran of the Korean conflict and was a lifelong resident of Wyoming County. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice Riffe Perdue; and a sister, Kitty Hughes. Survivors include two sons, Jerry Perdue and his wife, Shelby, of Cape Coral, Fla., and Emory Meadows and his wife, Sallie, of Cape Coral, Fla.; two daughters, Frances Bentley and her husband, Craig, of Calabas, Calif., and Ronda Kempski and her husband, James, of Decherd, Tenn.; a brother, Harold Perdue of Pineville; three sisters, Ruth O'Neil of Sophia, Greta Bolen of Jumping Branch and Merrnel Fortner of Romulus, Mich.; 17 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Calfee Funeral Service Chapel, Pineville, with the Rev. Larry Bolen officiating. Burial will follow in Cook Cemetery, Brenton. Betty Jo Rose Betty Jo Summers Rose, 65, of Odd, died Friday, July 9, 1999, at a Beckley hospital following a sudden illness. Born Sept. 5, 1933, at Amigo, she was the daughter of the late Alex M. and Maudie M. Bolen Summers. Mrs. Rose was a homemaker, a Christian and a member of the Mountain Valley Missionary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a half brother, Roy Young. Survivors include her husband of 43 years, Bruce Rose of Odd; a daughter, Sandra Eileen Rose Blevins and husband, Harley Jr., of Odd; a granddaughter, Bethany Rose Blevins of Odd; a half sister, Ruby Marie Moore of Chattanooga, Tenn.; and many special friends and loved ones. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Sophia, with the Rev. John Ed Lilly officiating. Burial will follow in Odd Cemetery.
