Register Herald Obituaries for July 13, 1999 Cora 'Granny' Chapman NETTIE - Cora "Granny" Chapman, 97, died Sunday, July 11, 1999, in a Summersville hospital following a long illness. Born Oct. 8, 1901, in Clay County, she was the daughter of the late Levi Prince and Eva Ellen Rogers Fitzwater. Mrs. Chapman was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Chapman; two daughters, Betty Jo Casto and Gladys Gail Chapman; and a son, Elbert Ray Chapman. Survivors include two daughters, Mary Ellen Bond of Nettie and Shirley J. Brown of Charleston; two sons, Henry Guy Chapman of Nettie and Harvey Maynard Chapman of Summersville; three half sisters, Merlene, June and Genieve; three half brothers, Dallas, Calvin and Roy Fitzwater; 22 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and 25 great-great-grandchildren. Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home Chapel, Rainelle, with the Rev. Garlin Groves officiating. Burial will follow in the Fields Cemetery, Nettie. Norcross OAK HILL - Neal Alfred Norcross, 69, of 107 Hayes St., died 1:30 p.m. Sunday, July 11, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born June 2, 1930, at Warden, he was the son of the late Neal W. and Daisy Moore Norcross. Mr. Norcross was a retired brick mason. He had been an Oak Hill resident for 23 years, having spent his childhood at Stanaford, and was a Woodrow Wilson High School graduate. He was an avid outdoorsman, having enjoyed hunting and fishing. Survivors include two brothers, Max M. Norcross of New Castle, Va., and Gary G. Norcross of Roanoke, Va.; a sister, Patty J. Saxlehner of Montross, Va.; a dear aunt, Claetta L. Helvey of Daniels; two nieces, Nancy Manning of Roanoke, Va., and Andrea of California; two nephews, Stephen Norcross of Dillsburg, Pa., and Gordon Saxlehner of Colorado; and a special friend, Keith Radford of Beaver. Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel with the Rev. Ronald George officiating. Burial will follow in Hurt Cemetery, Stanaford. Rena Pitotti Miss Rena Pitotti, 78, of 99 Rider Drive, Beckley, died Sunday, July 11, 1999, in a Beckley care center following a short illness. Born June 23, 1921, at Glen White, she was the daughter of the late Guiseppe and Laura Giovanelli Pitotti. After graduation from Woodrow Wilson High School, she attended Concord College and taught at Marsh Fork High School. She went on to pursue a degree in nursing at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. She received her master's degree in nursing from Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich., worked at Johns Hopkins and then became supervisor of medical surgical nursing at North Carolina Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill, N.C. In 1955 she accepted the position of head medical surgical nurse at BARH and finished her nursing career at VAMC in Beckley. Among her numerous contributions to nursing organizations throughout West Virginia were her service on many boards and committees and the beginning of the nursing program at West Virginia Institute of Technology in Montgomery, where she served as director of Allied Health. In her retirement she continued her activities at St. Francis de Sales parish, in the choir and as a member of the Ladies of St. Francis. She was also active at the Shepherd's Center and in the District 10 West Virginia Nursing Association. She was an avid bowler and bridge player and had been a resident of Beckley for the past 45 years. She was preceded in death by a sister, Josephine Pitotti Simmons, in 1998. Survivors include four sisters, Julia Pitotti Rufini of Walled Lake, Mich., Gina Pitotti Culicerto of Glen White, Ellen Pitotti Jumer of Rochester Hills, Mich., and Ida Pitotti of Beckley; a brother, Dario Pitotti and his wife, Helen, of Beckley; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral liturgy will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Beckley, with the Rev. Pericles F. Malacaman officiating. Rite of committal will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at Calfee Funeral Home, Beckley, where a scripture service will be at 8:30 p.m., with the Rev. Mr. Don Wise officiating. Pallbearers will be nephews, Pete, David, Richard, John and Chris Culicerto and Thomas D. Pitotti. Mabel Bays Williams LOOKOUT - Mabel E. Bays Williams, 86, died Monday, July 12, 1999, at a Fayette care center following a short illness. Born Aug. 13, 1912, at Lookout, she was the daugher of the late Henry T. Bays and Julie Frances Sevy Bays. Mrs. Williams was a lifelong resident of Lookout, a member of the Mt. Olive United Methodist Church and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by four sisters, Lida Nutter, Florence Parks, Ann Wiggin and Evelyn Holley; and four brothers, Ray, Harry, Albert Bays and Quincey Bays. Survivors include a daughter, Joan Goode and her husband, Emory "Diz," of Lookout; a grandson, Timothy Logan Goode and his wife, Lisa, of Meadow Bridge; and one great-granddaughter, April Goode of Meadow Bridge. Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mt. Olive United Methodist Church, Lookout, with the Revs. Mike Loudermilk and Stephen Meadows officiating.
