Register Herald Obituaries for July 15, 1999 A. David Abrams A. David Abrams, 79, of 147 Woodland Dr., Daniels, died Tuesday, July 13, 1999, in a Charleston hospital following a brief illness. Born Nov. 19, 1919, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of the late Samuel I. Abrams and Esther B. Abrams. Mr. Abrams moved with is parents to Scarbro in 1925, then moving to Oak Hill, and last to Beckley. He was educated in the local school system and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School. He attended and graduated from the University of Maryland Undergraduate College and in 1943 graduated from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, Dental School, University of Maryland with a D.D.S. degree. In dental school he was elected to the Gorgas Society, denoting excellence in academics and dental surgery. In 1943, he entered the U.S. Navy as Lieutenant serving through the end of World War II and was honorably discharged. He returned to Beckley in 1946, where he entered his fatherıs family business, Modern Furniture Company. He remained a pricipal in the operation until 1985. While a resident of Beckley, he was a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates, was active in the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Civitan Club, Moose Club, B lack Knight Country Club and Glade Springs Country Club. He was active for many years as a State Representative in the BıNai Brith. Survivors include his children, A. David Abrams Jr. of Beckley, Dr. Richard B. Abrams of Denver, Colo., Dennis M. Abrams of Philadelphia, Pa., and D. Samuel Abrams of Barcelona, Spain, Amy B. Abrams of Pasadena, Calif., Adam D. Abrams of Daniels, Jena Carol Abrams of Beckley, Susan Looney of Beckley, James David Abrams of Beckley; seven grandchildren; three nephews; and his brother-in-law of many years, Rabbi I.R. Wein of Beckley. Graveside services will be 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the Beth-el Section of Sunset Memorial Park, with Rabbi Isadore R. Wein officiating. Joseph B. Kovach PENCE SPRINGS ­ Joseph B. Kovach, 84, died 9 p.m., Tuesday, July 13, 1999, in a Hinton hospital following a long illness. Born Nov. 27, 1914, in Filbert, he was the son of the late Joseph B. and Susan Kovach Sr. Mr. Kovach had been a resident of Pence Springs for the past 23 years. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, had worked 18 years in Filbert as a coal miner for U.S. Steel, and was retired from Public Service Electric and Gas Company of New Jersey. He attended the Keller Presbyterian Church at Lowell. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Eleanor (Dee Dee) Kovach in 1982; and a brother, William Kovach. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Eleanor Bocho Kovach; a son, Joseph Kovach, both of Pence Springs; a sister, Mrs. William (Susan) Hayes of Deltona, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. Adkins Marciniak, 65, formerly of Maple Heights, Ohio, died Sunday, July 11, 1999, in an Ashtabula, Ohio, medical center following a short illness. Born Oct. 12, 1933, in Longbottom, she was the daughter of Lura Adkins of Oak Hill and the late Clark Adkins. Mrs. Marciniak was an assembler for Kay Dee Corporation in Orwell, Ohio, with 20 years of service, being formerly employed by Kroger in the bakery department for 20 years in Cleveland, Ohio. She was a member of the Eagles Club in Andover, Ohio. Her hobbies included fishing and hunting. She was preceded in death by a sister, Freeda Cooke; and two brothers, Herbert and Charles Adkins. Other survivors include three brothers, Joe Adkins and his wife, Shirley, of Valley View, Ohio, Estel Adkins of Layland, and Richard Adkins and his wife, Vivian, of Charlotte, N.C.; and a sister, Joyce Breeden of Mount Hope. Mooney Mildred Frances Pelphrey Mooney, 81, of Beckley, died Wednesday, July 14, 1999, at her home following a long illness. Born Aug. 7, 1917, in Van Lear, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Dan and Emma Phelps Pelphrey. Mrs. Mooney was a homemaker, a member of the Montcoal Presbyterian Church and was active in many civic affairs. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis A. Mooney. Survivors include three sons, Dennis Michael Mooney of Wilmington, N.C., Phillip Douglas Mooney and his wife, Carol, of Morgantown, and John H. Mooney and his wife, Deanna, of Huntington; a daughter, Frances Sleeth of Beckley; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Ruth Crotty Ohler Ruth Crotty Ohler, 97, of Beckley, died of natural causes, Tuesday, July 13, 1999, in a Beckley hospital. Born Sept. 16, 1901, in Ronceverte, she was the daughter of the late Oscar and Cora Jones Hughes. Mrs. Ohler was a member of the Lester Baptist Church for more than 70 years, and was a lifetime resident of Raleigh County. She was preceded in death by her first husband, T.O. "Tobe" Crotty in 1931; her second husband, George Ohler in 1961; six brothers; three sisters; a stepson; and several nieces and nephews. Survivors include two sons, Ralph Crotty and his wife, Genny, of Ypsilanti, Mich., and Donald Crotty of Beckley; a stepson, Herman Ohler of Virginia Beach, Va.; two stepdaughters, Vera and Georgia; a sister, Brooke Lucas; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. The celebration of her life will be conducted 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel with Evangelist Ralph Crotty and Pastor Bernie Heinz officiating. "Skinny" Sisk Sr., 77, of Ragland Road, Beckley, died Tuesday, July 13, 1999, in a Charleston hospital following a long illness. Born March 4, 1922, in Herndon, he was the son of the late Henry Lee and Nettie Monk Sisk. Rev. Sisk lived in Raleigh and Wyoming counties all his life and was a building contractor in brick and stone masonry. He was an ordained minister and a member of the Beckley Conference of Freewill Baptists and the West Virginia State Association of Freewill Baptists. He attended the Skelton Freewill Baptist Church. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, serving with the original 101st Airborne Division, 506 Battalion, Company E "Screaming Eagles" and was the recipient of the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Distinguished Service Award. He also received the European-African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon and the Distinguished Unit Badge. He survived four major battles and was portrayed in the "Band of Brothers" by Stephen Ambrose. He was preceded in death by five sisters, Lannie Goins, Delcie Sisk, Eloise McKinney Sisk, Virginia Pearlie Kelly and Gretchen Dingus; and three brothers, Lumer, Boyd and Raymond Sisk. Survivors include his wife, Louise Sisk and their two daughters, Sharon Sisk Branson and her husband, Terry, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Delcie Sisk Young of Beckley; two sons, Wayne A. Sisk Jr. and his wife, Mary, of Sophia, and Roy P. Sisk and his wife, Jill, of Danese; four granddaughters, Melissa Branson Bailey and her husband, Clayton, of Rockwell, Texas, Laura Danielle Branson of Chatsworth, Calif., Amelia L. Young of Beckley and Sara R. Sisk of Danese; four grandsons, Jeffrey D. Sisk and h is wife, Sherry, of Sophia, M. Shane Sisk of Sophia, Matthew T. Young of Beckley, and Chad P.
