Born May 31, 1936, near McCreery, he was the son of the late Elbert and Melinda Altice Ayers. Mr. Ayers was a retired coal miner and a member of the UMWA District No. 29. He had lived most of his life in McCreery, where he owned and operated a business for 15 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita Goins Ayers; and daughter, Ruth Ayers. Survivors include two sons, O. Lee Ayers II of Piney View, and Timothy Scott Ayers and his wife, Leah, of Fredericksburg, Va.; two daughters, Shelia Ayers of Piney View, and Christine Lilly of Richmond, Va.; and four grandchildren, Charles, Matthew, Michael and Shana Ayers. Born March 24, 1911, at Clear Creek, he was the son of the late Levi and Martha Stover Bailey. Mr. Bailey was a disabled veteran in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margie Mae Taylor Bailey; and his second wife, Lula Deltha Rollins Bailey. Survivors include two daughters, Martha Williams of Minden, and Emogene Fox of Fayetteville; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Kovach PENCE SPRINGS - Joseph B. Kovach, 84, died 9 p.m., Tuesday, July 13, 1999, in a Hintoni hospital following a long illness. Born Nov. 27, 1914, at Filbert, he was the son of the late Joseph B. and Susan Kovach Sr. Mr. Kovach had been a resident of pence Springs for the past 23 years. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, had worked 18 years in Filbert as a coal miner for U.S. Steel, and was retired from Public Service Electric and Gas Co. of New Jersey. He attended the Keller Presbyterian Church at Lowell. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Eleanor (Dee Dee) Kovach in 1982; and a brother, William Kovach. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Eleanor Bocho Kovach; a son, Joseph Kovach, both of Pence Springs; a sister, Mrs. William (Susan) Hayes of Deltona, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. Born Aug. 7, 1917, in Van Lear, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Dan and Emma Phelps Pelphrey. Mrs. Mooney was a homemaker, a member of the Montcoal Presbyterian Church and was active in many civic affairs. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis A. Mooney. Survivors include three sons, Dennis Michael Mooney of Wilmington, N.C., Phillip Douglas Mooney and his wife, Carol, of Morgantown, and John H. Mooney and his wife, Deanna, of Huntington; a daughter, Frances Sleeth of Beckley; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Born Sept. 27, 1923, at Crow, she was the daughter of the late Robert Underwood and Ada Brogan Underwood. Mrs. Morris was a homemaker, a member of Crow Christian Church and was a lifelong Crow resident. She was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby Underwood; and a half brother, Fred Underwood. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Henry Miller; a brother, Marshall McGinnis; and a sister, Arizona Hudson. Mrs. Sealey was a member of Salem Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Women of the Church. She was also superintendent of the Sunday School. Born Oct. 1, 1918, at Century, she was the daughter of the late John Zoltz and Julia Zoltz Norkevitz. Mrs. Williams was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Prosperity. She was a member of Winola Chapter Order of the Eastern Star of Mount Hope. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert "Bob" Williams on Aug. 20, 1998; two brothers, Pete and Eddie Zoltz, and a sister, Rosa Zoltz. Survivors include a son, Robert Williams Jr., and his wife, Lesa, of Beckley; a grandson, Chad Williams of Beckley; a granddaughter, Stephanie Williams of Beckley; a brother, Joe Norkevitz and his wife, Shelby, of Prosperity; three sisters, Agnes Radzus and June Dennis, both of Detroit, Mich., and Mrs. Fritz "Patsy" Simmert of Prosperity, and several nieces and nephews. Born July 24, 1990, in Mecklenburg County, N.C., he was the son of Bret and Cynthia (Cindy) Runyon Wood, formerly of Oceana. Matthew attended the Branchview Church of God, Concord. He enjoyed baseball and soccer. He was a student at R. Brown McAllister Elementary School. Other survivors include a brother, William Ryan Wood at home; his grandparents, Gary and Kay Wood of Glen Fork, J.B. and Linda Runyon of Glen Daniels; and several aunts and uncles, cousins.
