Register Herald Obituaries for July 19, 1999 Ernest C. Browning Ernest Carlos Browning, 77, of Sundial, died Saturday, July 17, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born Oct. 1, 1921, in Twilight, he was the son of the late Scott Browning and Alice Cook Browning Shumate. Mr. Browning was a former employee of Armco Steel and a retired employee of Peabody Coal Co., Montcoal, with 52 years of service. He was a member of the UMWA, Local Union 6608, and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, receiving the American Area, Victory World War II, European-African I Star, Asiatic-Pacific and Good Conduct medals. He also attended Stickney Community Church and was an avid gardener. He was preceded in death by a brother, Cecil Browning; and a sister, Phoebe Linville. Survivors include his wife, Roberta "Pat" Burnside Browning; a daughter, Nancy Tolliver and her husband, Lloyd, of Rock Creek; a son, Roger and his wife, Margaret, of Coal City; four sisters, Nannie Linville and Patsy Hicks, both of Van, Fairy Jarrell of Circleville, Ohio, and Violet Hammond of Bandytown; a brother, Esco Browning of Glen Daniel; eight grandchildren, Kelly, Kerry, Roger Dale, Kim, Tommy, Matthew, Jamie and Tara; and three great-grandchildren, Chelsa, Rebekah and Dillion. Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Stickney Community Church with the Revs. Danny Gilfilen and Jerry Tyree. Burial will follow in Pineview Cemetery, Orgas. Anna Marie Burleson Anna Marie Burleson, 78, of 404 Parkway St., Beckley, died Sunday, July 18, 1999, at her residence following a long illness. Born Aug. 7, 1920, in Crab Orchard, she was the daughter of the late Granville P. and Marie Radford Starr. Mrs. Burleson was a homemaker, a lifelong and active member of First Christian Church, Beckley, and a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class and Ladies Circle of the church. She was a member of the Beckley Woman's Club and Azalea Garden Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, E. Lee Burleson, on March 24, 1998, and was a lifelong resident of Raleigh County. Survivors include two daughters, Susan Davis of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Ellen DiLorenzo of Franklin, Tenn.; a sister, Charlotte Lilly of Beckley; two brothers, Dr. R.B. Starr of Beckley and Howard A. Starr of Palm Bay, Fla.; and five grandchildren, Devon Baldwin, Shannon Davis, Charles Davis, Joel and Jill DiLorenzo. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Calfee Funeral Home, Beckley, with the Rev. Russell F. Smith Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley. Francis Dr. Shoukry L. Francis, 77, of Sullivan Road, Glen Morgan, died at 10:12 a.m. Saturday, July 17, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born June 13, 1922, in Egypt, Dr. Francis was a retired urologist, having held a private practice in Beckley for 35 years. Dr. Francis received his medical training in Cairo, Egypt, and served his residency for medical practice in the United States in Charlotte, N.C. Following training in Charlotte, Dr. Francis received medical training at the Fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons in London. Dr. Francis was a member of the American Urologist Association and a member of Faith Baptist Church, Prosperity. Survivors include his wife of nearly 50 years, Merry Skov Francis; and two brothers and a sister, both in Egypt. Graveside rites will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Tilden Community Cemetery, Sullivan Road, with Pastor Larry Halsey officiating. Alma Meretta Goddard Alma Meretta Goddard, 79, of Stanaford, formerly of Red Springs, died Saturday, July 17, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born April 25, 1920, in Ivel, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Howard and Julia Adkins Hughart. Mrs. Goddard lived most of her life at Red Springs, where she was a member of Red Springs Community Church and a Sunday school teacher for 40 years. She had lived in Stanaford for the past 15 years and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Elcho Hughart and Emil Hughart; and a grandchild. Survivors include her husband, Oscar James Goddard; two daughters, Florence Peggy Duncan of Lanark and Carlese Carol D'Andrea of Miami; three sons, Raymond O. Goddard and Danny K. Goddard, both of Red Springs, and Kenneth W. Goddard of Harrison, Tenn.; three sisters, Ella Mae Gwinn, Evelyn Fox and Elma Reynolds, all of Lanark; 13 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home Chapel, Rainelle, with the Rev. Bill Lilly officiating. Burial will follow in Goddard Cemetery, Backus Road, Meadow Bridge.
