Register Herald Obituaries for July 22, 1999 Minnie K. Burrows HARVEY - Minnie Kathryn Burrows, 77, died Monday, July 19, 1999, at a Charleston hospital following a short illness. Born March 11, 1922, at Berry Mountain, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Jackson and Pearl Sweets Jackson. Mrs. Burrows was a homemaker, a member of Harvey Missionary Baptist Church and a former member of the church choir. She was preceded in death by her husband, Deacon James Wendell Burrows, on Sept. 20, 1976; two sons, William and Eugene; two daughters, Brenda and Barbara Ann; four brothers, William, Robert, Lewis and Richard Jackson; and a daughter-in-law, Gina. Survivors include her children, James Jr. of Glen Jean, Michael and his wife, Sharon, of Covington, Va., David and his wife, Jenailse, of Moreno Valley, Calif., Dewayne and his wife, Penny, of Charleston, Betty Lou of Los Angeles, Judith and her husband, Elder Ron, of Boomer and Linda and her husband, Armand, of Pittsburgh; a sister, Dolly Favors of Detroit; a former daughter-in-law, Norma Jean Braxton of Harvey; two devoted friends, Burnell Conliffe and Stephen Bragg, both of Harvey; 31 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, special acquaintances and friends. Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Harvey Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Stanley Blanks officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Lee, 81, of 119 Lincoln St., Harlem Heights, Oak Hill, died Tuesday, July 20, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born May 20, 1918, in Verbena, Ala., he was the son of the late Essic and Ella Mae Lee. Mr. Lee was a retired miner, a member of the UMWA and worked for the city of Oak Hill. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Harlem Heights, where he served as deacon and superintendent of Sunday school. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Katherine Angela Lee. Survivors include his wife, Neola Boykins Lee; two sons, Winford E. Lee and his wife, Jo Ann, of Spring Lake, N.C., and Eddie Lee and his wife, Angela, of Harlem Heights; eight grandchildren, Jackie Montgomery, Patricia Dancy, Robert Lee, Winford Lee Jr., Marvin Lee and Martin Lee of Spring Lake, Tyrone Hampton of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Michelle Lee of Harlem Heights; and 17 great-grandchildren. McGuire LEWISBURG - Thomas Charles McGuirre, 82, died Tuesday, July 20, 1999, at Culpeper (Va.) Memorial Hospital. Born Jan. 26, 1917, in War, he was the son of the late Dr. Morris McGuire and Ethel McGuire. Mr. McGuire was a retired colonel in the U.S. Army during World War II, Vietnam and the Office of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the Pentagon. He was a West Virginia 4-H All-Star, a member of Old Stone Presbyterian Church, Lewisburg, and a graduate of West Virginia University. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Christine Lingar McGuire; a brother, Dr. George McGuire; and a sister, Nell McGuire Cochrane. Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth M. Hefner, her husband, Thomas W. Hefner, and two grandchildren, Christine Whiting Hefner and Robert D. Hefner, all of Culpeper; and a sister, Janet E. Heffernan of Scottsdale, Ariz. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Old Stone Presbyterian Church, Lewisburg, with the Rev. Dexter Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in Rosewood Cemetery, Lewisburg. Frederick Alton Monk MANASSAS, Va. - Frederick Alton Monk, 56, died Wednesday, July 21, 1999, at his home following a 10-month illness with lung cancer. Born Feb. 17, 1943, at Amigo, he was the son of Garland Monk of Beckley and the late Sadie Opal Shrewsbury Monk, who preceded him in death on Sept. 30, 1986. Mr. Monk lived in Sophia until he enlisted in the Air Force in 1961. He was stationed at the Pentagon in Arlington, Va. When he left the service he was employed by Western Electric as an installer and later became a manager for AT&T, retiring in December 1989. He was an avid reader and loved the mountains and wildlife. He was preceded in death by a brother, James Garland Monk, on Feb. 10, 1943. Survivors include his wife, Karen Ann Ehlert Monk, who he married Dec. 19, 1964, in Alexandria, Va.; a daughter, Jean Renee Monk of Woodbridge, Va.; a son, Jerry Ray Monk of Turlock, Calif.; a brother, Jackie Lee Monk of Clarksville, Tenn.; three sissters, Mrs. Gene (Peggy) Burkhart of Big Rock, Tenn., Mrs. Randall (Patty) Wooten of Beckley and Barbara Jean of North Carolina; two granddaughters, Rebecca Ann Niemeyer and Jordan Danielle Monk; and a grandson, Kyle Jonathan Monk. Pearl Pritt ARLINGTON, Va. - Pearl Pritt, 97, formerly of Union, died Friday, April 2, 1999, in an Arlington care center. Born April 8, 1901, at Spring Creek, Greenbrier County, she was the daughter of the late Samuel R. and Mellie Livesay. Mrs. Pritt had lived in Union for about 50 years before moving to Virginia in 1975. In 1937 she married Harold L. Pritt, a well known merchant and mayor of Union who died in 1956. She was also preceded in death by a son, Dewey Lynch Pritt, in 1983. While in Union, she was a member of Union Methodist Church and was active in church and community affairs. She was a lifetime member of Union Chapter No. 122, Order of Eastern Star, and served as worthy matron in 1948. After moving to Arlington she became a member of First Presbyterian Church. Survivors include a brother, Lacy Livesay of Florida; a daughter-in-law, Sandra Pritt of Centreville, Va.; two grandchildren, Brian Pritt of San Luis Obispo, Calif., and Karen Honaker of Centreville; two great-granddaughters, Shanna and Lindsay Honaker of Centerville; two stepsons, Harold Lloyd Pritt of Utah and Bobby Gene Pritt of Pickaway; and five stepgrandchildren, Robert Pritt of Fort Myers, Fla., Jeff and David Pritt and Susan Perrine of Pickaway, and Terry Pritt of Baltimore. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Green Hill Cemetery. Officiating will be Peter Hause, an elder of First Presbyterian Church in Arlington who was Mrs. Prittıs legal guardian and who with Mrs. Hause were true and loyal friends throughout her long illness.
