Other survivors include a sister, Sariah Callender at home; paternal grandmother, Thea Callender of Westbury, N.Y.; maternal grandmother, Vicky Hoskins of Beckley; maternal grandfather, James Hoskins of Hinesville, Ga.; great-grandmother, Pauline Morris of Beckley, great-great-grandmother, Essie Baxter of Beckley; an uncle, Justin Callender of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and a aunt, Kimberly Jackman of Westbury. Born June 24, 1955, in Alamosa, he was the son of Olga Haga Adkins of Beckley and the late Wilbur Clark. Mr. Clark was a carpenter who worked in construction. Survivors include his wife, Gaye Kelly Clark of Beckley; his stepfather, Jack Lee Adkins Sr. of Beckley; two brothers, Jack Lee Adkins Jr. and his wife, Teresa, of Beckley and Kenneth Adkins and his wife, Thelma, of Union; and two nieces and one nephew. Culliss Mary Madelon Hall Culliss, 81, of Sophia, died Wednesday, July 21, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born April 23, 1918, in Red Star, she was the daughter of the late Leo and Blodwin Owen Hall. Ms. Culliss was a homemaker and of the Brethren faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Culliss Sr. Immediate survivors include two sons, Kenneth Culliss and his wife, Pam, of Grapevine, Texas, and Clarence Culliss and his wife, Maria, of Clifton Forge, Va.; a daughter, Jerry Curtis and her husband, Dennis, of Laurinburg, N.C.; and three grandsons, Brian Culliss of Kansas City, Mo., Gary Culliss of Boston and Jerel Culliss of Clifton Forge. Survivors include two daughters, Sylvia Womble of Raleigh and Nona Shatley of Knightdale, N.C.; a son, Larry Parsons of Rainelle; two sisters, Ruth Icenhour of Blowing Rock, N.C., and Kathryn Correll of Lenoir, N.C.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Born Dec. 18, 1912, in Hanover, he was the son of the late John Kenna and Meda Godfrey Hatfield. Mr. Hatfield was a retired superintendent of schools for Wyoming County. He was a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve, a former commander at the Bluefield Army Reserve Garrison and a World War II veteran. Mr. Hatfield was of the Protestant faith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bess Armstrong Hatfield; five brothers, Carl, Luther and Willie Hatfield, and Joe and Lonnie Shannon; and a sister, Lettie Hatfield. Survivors include three sons, Dean Hatfield and his wife, Holly, of Raleigh, N.C., Jack Hatfield and his wife, Myra, of Ripley and Kennie Hatfield Jr. and his wife, Marge, of West Palm Beach, Fla.; three daughters, Mary Hatfield of Charleston, Rachael Minor and her husband, Mark, of Indialantic, Fla., and Geraldine Mahoney and her husband, Patrick, of Ontario, Canada; three sisters, Tilda Harvey of Simon, Callie Trent of Cincinnati and Becky Berry of Hanover; and 12 grandchildren, Jimmy, Kennie Dean, Maria, Jackie, Josh, Dean Alex, Sarah Hatfield, Megan and Emily Minor, and Nancy, Kelly and Katie Mahoney. Wilma Bell Shanks Wilma Bell Shanks, 91, of 224 Vance Drive, Beckley, died at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, 1999, in a Beckley care center following a long illness. Born April 20, 1908, in Camp Creek, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Stovall and Vernie Hubbard Stovall. Mrs. Shanks was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Rest Primitive Baptist Church, Midway. She had lived in Beckley for the past nine years, having previously resided at MacArthur and Whitby. She was preceded in death by two sons, James E. Hunter and an infant son; and her husband, Paul G. Shanks, on Dec. 18, 1981. Survivors include two stepsons, William J. Shanks of Cedar Lake, Ind., and Glenn E. Shanks of Shelby, Ind.; a sister, Portia Waddell of Beckley; five grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with Pastor Edward Garten officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
