Register Herald Obituaries for July 25, 1999 Dorothy Alice Allen RED STAR - Dorothy Alice Allen, 59, died Friday, July 23, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born March 3, 1940, at Red Star, she was the daughter of the late Ernest Irwin "Butch" Edwards and Margaret Virginia Workman Edwards. Mrs. Allen was retired from Crown Cleaners as a dry cleaner presser and was a homemaker. She was also a member of Pax Branch Baptist Church, Pax, and she had also sought a nursing degree in the early 1970s. She was preceded in death by a son, Dayton Ervin Canterbury; and two sisters, Phyllis Canaday and Geraldine Morrison. Survivors include nine children, Robert Lee Canterbury Jr. of Maple Fork, Patricia Pickard of Miami, Roger Dale Canterbury Sr. of Maple Fork, Eddie Dean Canterbury of Pax, Kathy Ann Caldwell of Red Star, Eva Marie Johnson of Hilltop, Cammie Lynn Semple of Mobile, Ala., Terry Allen Canterbury of Pluto and William Randall Canterbury of Red Star; a sister, Pat Cochran of San Diego; two brothers, Marlan "Pickey" Edwards of Pax and Charles Edwards of Maryland; 27 grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at High Lawn Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Samuel Vance officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill. Timothy Joe Davis Timothy Joe Davis, 36, of Rock Creek, died Thursday, July 22, 1999, in a Boone County hospital from injuries received when he was struck by a tree while at work on a timber job in Boone County. Born Sept. 12, 1962, at Peterstown, he was the son of Violet L. Dillion Davis of Rock Creek and the late Edward H. Davis. Mr. Davis attended Glen Daniel Worship Center and was an employee of Whitt Logging Co., Mount Hope. Other survivors include a daughter, Katie Marie Davis of North Carolina; a stepson, Donald Lafferty of North Carolina; eight sisters, Linda Vaughn and her husband, Lonnie, of Naoma, Evelyn McKnight and her husband, Lawrence, Judy Workman and her husband, Johnie, Shirley Skaggs and her husband, Jackie, Jane Davis and her husband, Frank, Elvie Dillon and her husband, Woodrow, and Marilyn Davis, all of Rock Creek, and Ruby Lee and her husband, Mike, of Troy, Va.; seven brothers, Charles and his wife, Sue, of Virginia, Junior W. and his wife, Connie, of Coal City, Larry and his wife, Pam, of Glen White, and Ronald and his wife, Betty, Harold and his wife, Cathy, Curtis and his wife, Jan, and Claude Davis, all of Rock Creek; and 40 nieces and nephews. Hamrick, 92, died Friday, July 23, 1999, at his home following a long illness. Born Jan. 25, 1907, at Blue Sulphur Springs, Greenbrier County, he was the son of the late Isaac C. Hamrick and Effie Allen Hamrick. Mr. Hamrick was a timberman-truck driver. He was formerly employed by E.H. Crouch Lumber Co. and retired from Island Creek Stores, Kopperston. He attended Matheny United Methodist Church and enjoyed gardening and woodworking. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Geneva Baker and Ruby Rogers; and four brothers, John, Frank, Cecil and Jimmy Hamrick. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Edith Adkins Hamrick; a daughter, Helen Cook and her husband, David, of Oceana; a brother, George Hamrick of Grassy Meadows; two sisters, Mae Rohrbaugh of Buckhannon and Ada Lafon of Pasadena, Md.; a sister-in-law, Ocie Adkins of Cool Ridge; and cousins, nieces and nephews. Thompson WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Sarah Elizabeth McGinnis Thompson, 92, formerly of Beckley, died Friday, July 9, 1999, from complications from a stroke. Born Aug. 20, 1906, in Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Sallie Holroyd McGinnis and William Hereford McGinnis. Mrs. Thompson was a longtime resident of Beckley and a member of United Methodist Temple. She was a member of the James Allen Chapter of the DAR, Azalea Garden Club, Sallie McGinnis Bible Class, United Methodist Women and Raleigh County Historical Society. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alex G. Thompson II, in 1958. Survivors include a son, Alex "Tommy" Thompson III of West Palm Beach, with whom she resided. The body will be cremated. The remains will be buried with her husbandıs at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego. At her request, no memorial service is planned. Charles E. Willey AKRON, Ohio - Charles E. "Chuck" Willey, 69, formerly of Summers County, died Thursday, July 22, 1999, in Akron following a long illness. Born July 19, 1930, in Hinton, he was the son of the late John and Irene Willey. Mr. Willey had been a resident of Akron since 1959. He was a retired employee of Ford Motor Co. with 30 years of service. Survivors include his wife, Linda "Moose" Willey; two sons, Jack Willey and his wife, Carol, and Ed Willey and his wife, Jane, both of Akron; two brothers, Ted Willey of Smoot and Bill Willey of Hinton; two sisters, Eva Allen of Nimitz and Edith Adkins of Killeen, Texas; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel, Hinton, with Pastor Felix Baker officiating. Burial will follow in Cooper Cemetery, Sandstone.
