Register Herald Obituaries for July 28, 1999 Lillian M. Bailey HINTON - Lillian Maddy Bailey, 92, died 5:40 a.m., Tuesday, July 27, 1999, in a Hilldale care center following a long illness. Born Sept. 7, 1906, in Talcott, she was the daughter of the late William Thomas and Clyde Rollyson Maddy. Mrs. Bailey had lived most of her life in Summers County. During her early years, she worked at the Rayon Plant in Covington, Va., and at the Mountain Artisian Sewing Center in Sandstone. She was a charter member of the River Valley Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, William "Bill" Bailey on Dec. 26, 1974; a brother, John Herman Maddy; and an infant sister, Jessie Maddy. Survivors include two sons, William H. "Bill" Bailey and his wife, Barbara, of Princeton, and Charles F. "Freddie" Bailey and his wife, Gina, of Mechanicsville, Va.; three daughters, Phyllis Gwinn and her husband, Larry, of Nimitz, Lois Cales and her husband, Olen, of Rainelle, and Erma Adkins and her husband, Norman, of Mechanicsville, Va.; a sister, Elizabeth Ford of Roanoke, Va.; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the River Valley Baptist Church with Pastor Bill Jenkins and the Rev. James Parker officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, Ballengee. Brock Theodore Russell Brock, 83, of 110 Madison Court, Stickney, died Monday, July 26, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born Oct. 23, 1916, in Jacksboro, Tenn., he was the son of the late James Mack Brock and Ida Belle Richardson Brock. Mr. Brock was a retired miner from Armco Inc., at Montcoal and a member of the UMWA for 62 years. He was of the Christian faith. Survivors include his wife, Ethel "Virginia" Wray Brock; two brothers, Earl Brock of Beckley, and Marvin Brock and his wife, Nancy, of Roanoke, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Beckley, with the Rev. Jerry Brown of Birchton, officiating. Mary Ruth Johnston HUNTINGTON - Mary Ruth Lowry Johnston, 94, died Tuesday, July 27, 1999, in a Huntington hospital. Born April 9, 1905, in Springdale, she was the daughter of the late James W. and Belle V. Brown Lowry. Mrs. Johnston was a graduate of Marshall University and retired from Anderson-Newcomb Company. She was a member of the Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church and Circle 7. She was a life member of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 8 and a former member of The Woman's Club of Huntington. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Logan S. Grose; her second husband, Marvin Johnston; two stepchildren, Harold M. Johnston and Lois M. Grose. Survivors include two stepchildren, Eloise V. Johnston of Huntington, and John L. Johnston of Atlanta; two stepdaughters-in-law, Phyllis C. Johnston of Atlanta, and Patricia K. Willie Motley EAST ORANGE, N.J. - Willie Motley, 76, formerly of Beckley, died Friday, July 23, 1999, in a Newark, N.J., hospital following a long illness. Born March 4, 1923, in Beckley, he was the son of the late Samuel L.W. Motley and Nancy Neal Motley. Mr. Motley was retired from East Orange Veterans Hospital with 25 years of service. He was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church, Beckley, and a World War II veteran. He was owner of The Lounge in Orange, N.J., for many years and was a member of the Mount Horeb Lodge No. 9 AF and AM, King William and American Legion Post 70. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jacqueline Motley; five brothers, Louis, Elbert, James, Eli, and Samuel Motley; and a sister, Ida Mae Yeager. Smith Herbert Marshall Smith, 43, of Amigo, died Tuesday, July 27, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born May 19, 1955, in Helen, he was the son of the late Herbert and Clara Smith. Mr. Smith was a disabled coal miner and of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Stanley, Raymond and Lonnie Smith. Joseph 'Joe' Tolliver EL PASO, Texas - Joseph A. "Joe" Tolliver, 80, formerly of Mullens, died Thursday, July 22, 1999. Born Oct. 14, 1919, in Maben, he was the son of the late Booker and Melinda Byrd Tolliver. While living in Mullens, he worked on the Virginian Railroad. He later retired from the railroad in El Paso, Texas. He was of the Methodist faith. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Tracy and Linville Tolliver; and three sisters, Maggie Tolliver, Thelma Fitswater, and Maymie Farmer. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Marie Belcher Tolliver; two sons, Joseph A.
