Register Herald Obituaries for July 29, 1999 Frank C. Alley Frank Camden Alley, 88, of MacArthur, died Tuesday, July 27, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born May 13, 1911, at Page, he was the son of the late John and Sar-ah Buckland Alley. Mr. Alley spent his childhood in Greenbrier and Fayette counties. He was a 60-year resident of Raleigh County, having lived in MacArtrhur the past 12 years. As a young man his work career began as a caddie at The Greenbrier at White Sulphur Springs. He worked 18 years in the coal industry for Sterling Smokeless and retired with 30 years of service from the Raleigh Coca-Cola Bottling Works. Still working at the age of 88, he was presently employed as a courier for Engineering Services Incorporated. Mr. Alley was the last living charter member of the MacArthur Church of God Worship Center, where he served as the church clerk for 27 years. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lois Manna Alley, in 1984. Survivors include his wife, Virgie Meadows Robertson Alley; three sons, Charles H. Meadows of Cool Ridge, Kenneth M. Alley and his wife, Margie, of Beckley, and Talmadge Alley of Beckley; three daughters, Patricia "Patty" Bennett of Boston, Nila J. Maynard and her husband, Norval, of Beckley, and Rebecca S. Williams and her husband, Charles, of Oak Hill; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a stepson, Kermit Robertson and his wife, Frances, of Cleveland, Tenn.; two stepdaughters, Gladola Terry and her husband, Kendall, and Geraldine "Gerry" Terry and her husband, Norris, all of Lester; three stepgrandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; and a half brother, Roy Lee Alley and his wife, Sharon, of Charleston. Services will be 2 p.m. today at the MacArthur Church of God Worship Center with the Rev. Mark Schrade and the Rev. Otis Clyburn officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley. Kenneth Ray Dixon RAINELLE - Kenneth Ray Dixon, 62, died Monday, July 26, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born Nov. 7, 1936, at McKendree, he was the son of the late Gladys Lilly Adkins and Harry Edward Dixon. Mr. Dixon was a retired self-employed woodworker, member of the Hilltop Baptist Church, Crab Orchard, member of the Rainelle Moose Lodge, attended Sewell Valley Baptist Church of Rainelle and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Freda Marie Dixon and Bertie Elizabeth Dixon; and two brothers, Yuhal George Dixon and Carlos E. Dixon Sr. Survivors include three daughters, Cindy Collins, Angie Carter, and Kim Addair, all of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sisters, Malena "Sis" Bresenhan of Hines and Voneda Vandall of Stanaford; three brothers, Herbert "Bubby" Dixon of Nitro, Harry "H.E." Durham, 85, of Beckley, died Tuesday, July 27, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born Nov. 17, 1913, in Summers County, he was the son of the late George and Sophrona Houchins Durham. Mr. Durham was a retired coal miner, working for 43 years, last employed at Westmoreland Coal Co. He was a member of the UMWA Local 8152 and a member of the Hotchkiss Church of God. He was preceded in death by five brothers; three sisters; and three grandchildren. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Ratha J. Rice Durham; two sons, Gene Durham and his companion, Jewel, of Glen White, and Daniel Durham of Hickory, N.C.; five daughters, Joann Martin and her husband, Randall, of Beckley, Martha Williams of Beckley, Lila Upchurch and her husband, Raymond, of Daniels, Sandra Smale and her husband, Jim, of Bangor, Pa., and Yvonne Wilson and her husband, Robert, of Slab Fork; two sisters, Broaddus Scarberry and Gladys Newbourne, both of Beckley; 30 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Lloyd 'Bernard' Edwards Lloyd "Bernard" Edwards, 87, of Sophia, departed this life Wednesday, July 28, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born Aug. 14, 1911, at Blake in Mercer County, he was the son of the late John and Mary Rich-ards Edwards. Mr. Edwards was a lifetime resident of Sophia, and a member of the Sophia Baptist Church. He was a retired coal miner and had more than 40 years of service with Slab Fork Coal Co. He was preceded in death by a brother, Leonard Edwards; and a sister, Gladys Edwards. Born in Matoaka, she was the daughter of the late Matthew and Maude Bowman. Mrs. Lowry enjoyed collecting dolls and was considered everyone's grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale A. Lowry; and a brother, Russell Bowman and his wife, Ruby. Donell Thompson Donell Thompson, 69, of 300 Bair St., Beckley, died Sunday, July 25, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born March 18, 1930, at Whitby, he was the son of the late Pete Thom-pson and Mamie Bratcher Thompson. Mr. Thompson was a supervisor for the street department for the Town of Moorestown, N.J. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Delilah and Mae; three brothers, Victor, Elgin "Buck" and Clifford Thompson. Arthur 'Bus' Toler LYNCO - Arthur "Bus" Toler, 83, died Tuesday, July 27, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born June 13, 1916, in Wy-oming County, he was the son of the late Pete Toler and Mary Goodman Toler. Mr. Toler was a lifelong resident of Wyoming County and was a timberman, having worked most of his life in the logging industry. He was an Army veteran and a member of the Full Gospel Church in Jesus Name at Lillyhaven. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Blankenship Toler; a daughter, Elvira Toler; a grandson, William Paul Whitson Jr.; three sisters, Erie, Vida and Sara; and six brothers, Johnny, Onnie, Squire, Aaron, Bedford and Luther Toler. Survivors include three sons, Teddy Toler Jr., Jackie Toler and his wife, Audra, and Eddie Toler and his wife, Daisy, all of Lynco; five daughters, Kathy Belcher and her husband, Dallas, Judy Whitson and her husband, Paul, Phyllis Toler and her husband, Fred, Wilma Cline and her husband, Franklin, all of Lynco, and Daisy Farrington and her husband, Paul, with whom he resided; a brother, Hughie Toler of Sun Hill; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Webb Doris Wilma Holmes Webb, 78, of the Dry Hill community, Beckley, died Wednesday, July 28, 1999, at her home after a long illness. Born Jan. 7, 1921, in Graham, N.C., she was the daughter of the late George and Fannie Thompson Holmes. Mrs. Webb spent her childhood in Graham, N.C., and moved to the Sundial area in 1945, settling in Naoma in 1949, where she lived for 33 years before coming to the Beckley area. She was a graduate of High Point College earning a bachelor's degree in teaching, and she did post graduate work at Marshall University and West Virginia University. Mrs. Webb was a teacher at Marsh Fork High School, teaching English and psychology for 43 years, retiring in 1978. She was a member of the Rebekah Chapel at Rock Creek and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Whites-ville Chapter. In her leisure time she enjoyed working with ceramics, having also taught classes in ceramics. She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Webb in July 11, 1986. Survivors include a son, George Webb and his wife, Martha, of Beckley; three brothers, George W. Holmes III of Charlottesville, Va., William Holmes of Chico, Calif., and Herbert A. Holmes Jr. of Graham, N.C. Services will be 3 p.m. Friday at Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Samuel Vance and the Rev. J.D. Pettry officiating.
