Robert Thomson Jr. Col. Robert Thomson Jr., 95, of Beckley, died = Wednesday, May 31,=20 2000, in a local hospital following a short illness. Born Dec. 13, 1904, in Avonbridge, Scotland, he was the son of the = late=20 Rob-ert and Ann Robertson Thomson. Col. Thomson was one of the first Boy Scouts in the United States. As = a Scout=20 master he took his whole troop to the National Scout Jamboree in = Washington,=20 D.C., in 1937. He worked as an electrician for Raleigh Coal & Coke. He was a = member of=20 the National Guard, joining the U.S. Army prior to World War II. He = served in=20 the Panama Canal Zone, Ecuador, Germany, Japan and Korea. He was = stationed at=20 the Pentagon, Fort Benning and Fort Hood. He was the first colonel in = Raleigh=20 County and was recipient of the Bronze Star. He was the oldest man at = the time=20 to take paratrooper training at Fort Benning. Col. Thomson served as = head of the=20 truce team in Korea and with the war tribunal in Japan. He served in the = judge=20 adjutant general's office and retired with the rank of full colonel. = He ran unsuccessfully two times for sheriff of Raleigh County on the=20 Republican ticket and also ran unsuccessfully two times for mayor. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Beckley, the Hogue-Cook = Sunday=20 School Class and also served on the Board of Trustees. He was a member = of the=20 Beni Kedem Shrine Temple, Beckley Masonic Lodge No. 95 AF and AM, = Scottish Rite=20 of Freemasonry, S.J., USA Beckley Moose Lodge 1606, Beckley Elks Lodge = 1452,=20 American Legion Post 32, VFW and the Republican National Committee. Col. Thomson was a member of the Kiwanis Club for more than 30 years, = serving=20 as lieutenant governor; he was also a George F. Hixson fellow. Thomson was a former chairman of the Raleigh County Chapter of = the=20 American Red Cross.
