Register Herald Obituaries for June 3, 1999 Ralph Barnette MONETA, Va. - Ralph Barnette, 79, of Smith Mountain Lake, died Sunday, May 30, 1999, peacefully in his home. Born June 18, 1919, in Sutton, he was the son of the late Francis McDonald Barnette and Susan Courtney Barnette. Mr. Barnette was a member of Boomer Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a retired welder from Union Carbide, Alloy. Survivors include his wife, Edith Hall Barnette; a daughter, Brenda S. Sangrey of Plano, Texas; two sisters, Ruth B. Murrill of Leesburg, Fla., and Pauline Joslin of Charleston; and two grandchildren, Charles Barnette Sangrey and Kristina Rae Sangrey, both of Plano. Bryant FAYETTEVILLE - John Sidney Bryant, 79, died Monday, May 31, 1999, in a Beckley medical center following a short illness. Born Sept. 27, 1919, in Victor, he was the son of the late Philip Ray and Mary Catherine Atkins Bryant. Mr. Bryant was a retired collier and a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mabel Bryant; and four brothers, Henry, Herman, Lowell and Ralph Bryant. Survivors include a brother, Roger Bryant of Fayetteville; two sisters, Virgie James and Anna Hague, both of Oak Hill; and many nieces and nephews. Thaddeus Hazelgrove Thaddeus "Thad" McKeen Hazelgrove, 79, of Beckley, died Monday, May 31, 1999, in a Beckley care center following a long illness. Born Jan. 17, 1920, in Hanover County, Va., he was the son of the late Thaddeus Otaway and Josephine Werner Hazelgrove. Mr. Hazelgrove spent his childhood in Hanover County and had been a resident of the Beckley area for the past 60 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the South Pacific during World War II, was a construction worker for Vecillo & Grogen and retired from Ashland Coal Co. He was a member of Memorial Baptist Church, Beckley. He was preceded in death by a brother, William Hazelgrove. Survivors include his wife, Lorraine Wills Hazelgrove; two stepdaughters, Terri Minozzi and her husband, Jan, of Richmond, Va., and Linda Finch of Houston; two stepsons, Dorse Hicks and his wife, Cindy, of Beckley and Mainard Hicks and his wife, Linda, of Grafton, Ohio. Mary Jane Hubbard OAK HILL - Mary Jane Adams Hubbard, 70, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999, at her home following a long illness. Born Sept. 13, 1928, in Westerly, she was the daughter of the late Hassel A. and Ida Deliah Hubbard Adams. Mrs. Hubbard was a retired telephone operator for C&P Telephone Co. She was a member of Jones Avenue First Church of God, Oak Hill, the Women of the Church of God and the Telephone Pioneers. Survivors include a brother, Carl Adams of Green Valley, Ariz. McDowell Lewis, 90, died of natural causes Tuesday, June 1, 1999, at her home. Born May 15, 1909, in Minden, she was the daughter of the late Charles G. and Hattie O. Miller McDowell. Mrs. Lewis was a retired school teacher, former director of New River Bank and Trust and One Valley Bank, Oak Hill, and a homemaker. She was a member of Oak Hill United Methodist Church and Oak Hill Garden Club. She was a graduate of Marshall (College) University in Huntington, where the College of Business now bears her name. Mrs. Lewis was the first woman in the United States to have a college of business named in her honor. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Edward "Eddie" Lewis, on Oct. 24, 1971. Survivors include her family members, Joe Lewis IV and Sandy Lewis, Stewart Lewis, Mary O. Lewis, Brent Lewis, Betsy Lewis, Ken and Mary Kay Buckius, Elizabeth Buckius, Christine Buckius, Donna McDowell, Jennifer McDowell, Katie McDowell, Vicki Park, Ruth McMann, Jeanne and Bill Kenney, and Charlotte Newman. Mrs. Smith was a homemaker and a member of Bethel Freewill Baptist Church, MacArthur, the Women's Auxiliary, Adult Bible Class and Choir. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Wayne, Phillip, Harry, Ronald and Emmett Utt. Survivors include her husband, Lloyd G. Smith; four daughters, Peggy Bolt and her husband, Ronnie, of MacArthur, Linda Hinkle and her husband, Jimmy, of Daniels, Kathy Baker and her husband, David, of Beckley and Julie Thompson and her husband, Rick, of Coal City; four sisters, Burnice Brooks of Soak Creek, Ava McKinney of Beckley, Leona Hensley of Soak Creek and Betty Cadle of Amigo; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
