Register Herald Obituaries for June 6, 1999 Dennis Lee Adkins Sr. HANAHAN, S.C. - Dennis Lee Adkins Sr., 58, died Friday, June 4, 1999, in a Charleston, S.C., hospital. Born Jan. 18, 1941, in Fay-ette County, he was the son of Jonie B. Adkins and Evelyn Samples Adkins. Mr. Adkins was a retired 1st class petty officer with the U.S. Navy with 20 years of service, including service in Vietnam. He was a member of VFW Post 10256, the American Legion post in Goose Creek, S.C., and Fleet Reserve Chapter 50. Survivors include his wife, Sandra Thompson Adkins; two daughters, Denice Donahue of Virginia Beach, Va., and Jane Purvis of Rainbow City, Ala.; three sons, Dennis Lee Adkins Jr. of North Charleston, S.C., Gary Adkins of Hanahan and Richard Adkins of Morganton, N.C.; his stepfather, J.W. Rush of Macedonia, S.C.; a sister, Mildred Love of Lexington, N.C.; and three brothers, Samuel Adkins of Huger, S.C., and Richard Adkins and Charles Adkins, both of Moncks Corner, S.C. Blankenship DOBSON, N.C. - William Homer "Bill" Blankenship, 75, formerly of Beckley, died Friday, June 4, 1999, in a Winston-Salem, N.C., hospital following a long illness. Born July 26, 1923, at Winding Gulf, he was the son of the late C.H. and Linda Amanda Jane Southern Blankenship. Mr. Blankenship was a retired coal miner, working 37 years in the coal industry. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II in India. He was preceded in death by a daughter, two sisters and two brothers. Survivors include his wife, Roxie Thompson Blankenship; two sons, Bobby Blankenship and his wife, Robin, of Beckley and Rex Blankenship and his wife, Denita, of Lexington, S.C.; three daughters, Patty Hayes and her husband, Chuck, of Meadow Bridge, Becky Keith and her husband, Jimmy, of Oxford, N.C., and Judy Richardson of Dobson; a brother, Harold Blankenship of Beckley; his stepmother, Ethel Blankenship of Beckley; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a multitude of family and friends. Services will be 1 p.m. today at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Cody Harmon Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Friends may call one hour before services at the funeral home. Sophia-Midway VFW Post No. 4326 will conduct military graveside rites. Johnson Jr. Morton Alexander "Alex" Johnson Jr., 50, of 103 Druid Ave., Beckley, died Friday, June 4, 1999, at his home following a long illness. Born Oct. 6, 1948, at Beckley, he was the son of Margaret Bibb Johnson of Beckley and the late Morton A. "Ping" Johnson. Mr. Johnson was president and owner of Minex Corp. He was a member and elder of Beckley Presbyterian Church, a member of Beckley Elks Lodge, Black Knight Country Club and the Beckley-Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce. He was also active with Beckley Little League. He was a member and supporter of the Beckley-Raleigh County YMCA and a member and past head of the Raleigh County Republican Committee. Mr. Johnson attended Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg, Va., and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School. He also graduated from West Virginia University, where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity and the Army ROTC and served at Fort Knox, Ky. Survivors include his wife, Glenna Hamilton Johnson; two daughters, Katherine-Anne McLeod Johnson of Richmond, Va., and Bonney Love Johnson of Lancaster, Pa.; a son, Matthew Alexander Johnson of Beckley; a sister, Susan Johnson High and her husband, Gilbert P. Jr., of Philadelphia; and niece and nephews, Margaret Amanda High, Gilbert P. High III and his wife, Maureen D., and their son, Zachary David, and David Alexander High and his wife, Lori T. Nelma Gay Kiblinger ROCK - Nelma Gay Kiblinger, 67, of Old Lashmeet Road, died Friday, June 4, 1999, in a Princeton hospital. Born July 3, 1931, at Stotesbury, she was the daughter of the late Kyle Delp and Pauline Archer Delp. Mrs. Kiblinger was a graduate of Sophia High School and was a member of Lashmeet Freewill Baptist Church. She was a member of the Mountaineer Bowling League and the Twilight Twirlers Square Dancers. She was the developer of Green Acres Subdivision and Green Acres Restaurant, Princeton. She was preceded in death by a brother, James David "J.D." Delp. Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Ralph Kiblinger; three daughters, Linda Sisk of Roanoke, Va., Carol Marshall and her husband, Bob, of Richmond, Va., and Diana Kiblinger of Princeton; three sisters, twin sister Norma Dishner and her husband, Randolph, of Lashmeet, Opal Smith and her husband, Pete, of Bridgeton, N.J., and Judy Gillespie and her husband, Clayton, of Peterstown; three brothers, Alvin Delp and his wife, Kathy, of Bridgeton, Jackie Delp Sr. and his wife, Debbie, of Princeton and Jackie Delp Jr. of Lashmeet; a sister-in-law, Nancy Delp of Sophia; seven grandchildren, Brian Kiblinger, Keith Marshall, Jason Marshall, Scott Marshall, James Sisk III, Terry Sisk Hall and Rajah Sisk Shrader; and a great-grandson, Brett Hill Sisk. Workman Smith, 52, formerly of the Pine Knob area of Naoma, died Thursday, June 3, 1999, in a Newark hospital after suffering a heart attack. Born Jan. 15, 1947, at Drews Creek, she was the daughter of the late William J. and Bertha Morris Workman. Mrs. Smith was employed as an addiction counselor at PACE Inc., Wilmington, Del. She graduated from Marsh Fork High School and West Virginia Tech and did her post-graduate work in counseling. Survivors include her husband, Al Smith; a son, Bryce J. Richard and his wife, Margery, of Dagsboro, Del.; three stepdaughters, Karen Smith, Diane Smith and Nancy Savery, all of Delaware; two stepsons, James and Thomas Smith, both of Delaware; two brothers, Walter L. Workman and his wife, Patty, of Charleston and William R. Workman and his wife, Amy, of Cumberland, Md.; two grandchildren, Preston Bryce and Sierra Lynn Richard; 14 stepgrandchildren; a godchild, Krista Marie Schulte; a niece; and three nephews.
