Register Herald Obituaries for June 8, 1999 Madrith "Mattie" Davis CLIFTON SPRINGS, N.Y. - Madrith "Mattie" Davis, 68, formerly of Crab Orchard, died Friday, May 14, 1999, in a Clifton Springs care center. Born Jan. 21, 1931, in Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Captolia Houck. Ms. Davis had resided in Clifton Springs for the past 19 years. She was preceded in death by her eldest son, Ronald E. Davis in September of 1998, in Rochester, N.Y. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Gladys Houck Goodman of Crab Orchard. Survivors include two daughters, Joan Pennington and her companion, Timothy Mullin, of Phelps, N.Y., and Judy Blake, and companion, John, of Beckley; a son and his fiancé, Dwayne Davis and Marie Raes of Clifton Springs; a daughter-in-law, Lynn Davis of Rochester, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Sheree Rugenstein of Lyons, N.Y., Charles Pennington of Manchester N.Y., John Pennington of Clifton Springs, Jimmy Blake Jr. of Prosperity, W.Va., and Ronda Davis of Rochester; three sisters, Judie "MaMaw" Drake of Crab Orchard, Maxine Brezintine of Lester, and Bernice Houck; two brothers, Howard and Everett Houck; two great-grandchildren, Jessica and Alyssa Rugenstein; a niece, Mary McEachern and special cousins, Billy and Desiree McEachern of Crab Orchard, and Crystal Lilly of Crab Orchard. Services were held May 19, at the R.A. Patrick Funeral Home, 26 West Main St., Clifton Springs. Burial followed in the Riverview Cemetery. Deck, 85, died Tuesday, May 25, 1999, in St. Francis Hospital following a long illness. Mr. Deck was retired from DuPont with 37 years of service, a member of the St. Anthony¹s Catholic Church in Charleston, and treasurer of the Elks. Survivors include his wife, Elsa Deck; two daughters, Rebecca Jean Bennett of Newark, Del., and Susan Marie Bryan-Chambers of Moundsville; a brother, Wesley William of Florida; three sisters, Violet Nemky of North Carolina, Ruth Cole of Cross Lanes, and Virginia Jackson of Ohio; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Deweese Ronald Jack Deweese, 65, of Lester, died Saturday, June 5, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born May 24, 1934, in Clay County, he was the son of Dale Deweese of Princewick, and the late Dicie Butcher Deweese. Mr. Deweese was a retired coal miner and a member of the UMWA. He was a lifetime member of the Sophia VFW Post No. 4326. He was also a member of the Beckley Eagles and the Beckley DAV. He was a Korean Conflict veteran. Other survivors include his wife, Eula Richardson Deweese; two sons, Ronald Deweese of Statesville, N.C., and Roger Deweese of Coal City; two stepsons, Micky Wood of Lester and Wesley Wood of Winston-Salem, N.C.; four daughters, Terri Deboard of Coal City, Janice Scott of Liberty, N.C., Jackie Folena of Coal City, and Lisa Pauley of Spencer, Va.; four stepdaughters, Linda Harding of Lester, Leona Gillispie of Troutman, N.C., Kathy Harless of Maiden, N.C., and Jackie Cook of Lester; a brother, Basil Deweese of Crab Orchard; four sisters, Shelia Richmond of Morgantown, Josephine Weddle of Wise, Va., Mona Justice of Princewick, and Monica Moore of Princewick; 30 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter, Celesy Farley. Johnson, formerly of Pratt, died Saturday, June 5, 1999, in a Venice, Fla., health center following a long illness. Born May 19, 1908, in Page, she was the daughter of the late Harry P. and Emma McVey Martin. Mrs. Johnson was a member of Venice Presbyterian Church, Venice, Fla., and was formerly a 66-year resident of Pratt before moving to Venice. Survivors include two daughters, Gwendolyn J. Delancey and Minnie J. Powell, both of Venice, Fla. Graveside services will be 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Montgomery Memorial Park, London, with the Rev. John L. Smith officiating. She was preceded in death by her parents, Garley R. and Gertie Whitt of Coal City; and a sister, Rosie June; and two brothers, David and Larry Whitt. Survivors include her husband, Ronald D. Born July 10, 1981, in Beckley, she was the daughter of William Mark Reeves of Oak Hill, and Deborah Kay Dunford Bowlin of Sanford, N.C. Miss Reeves was a member of Daniels Wesleyan Church. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Sadie Dunford. Other survivors include a sister, Angela Dawn Reeves of Sanford, N.C.; a half-sister, Christina Lewis of Sanford, N.C.; and her paternal grandparents, Billy and Glenna Reeves of Beckley. Mr. Smith was a native and lifelong resident of Etowah County, retired from Coca-Cola Bottling Company after 38 years of service, an active volunteer in numerous church and community activities and a member of the First Baptist Church of Southside. Born Oct. 30, 1930, in Crab Orchard, she was the daughter of the late James and Vada Goode Harris. Mrs. Stewart was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Denice H. Stewart; and two sons, Denice Hilton Stewart and Kenneth Lee Stewart. Williams, 76, of Glen Daniel, died Saturday, June 5, 1999, in a Beckley care center following a short illness. Born Nov. 22, 1922, in Sandlick, he was the son of the late Eldridge Bartley and Lydia Elizabeth Williams. Mr. Williams was a World War II veteran serving with the 323 Infantry Regiment in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of operations. He received an Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with one Bronze Star, Philippine Liberation Medal with one Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. For many years he raised Dahlia bulbs commercially and was an avid flower grower. He was preceded in death by a brother, Bartley Ross Williams; and two sisters, Marjorie Clemens and Virginia Pearl Williams. Survivors include a brother, Walter Williams of Glen Daniel; a niece, Frances Blackshire and her husband, Roger, of Glen Daniel; three great-nieces, Patricia Ashwell of Fayetteville, Tracy Blackshire of Smithfield, N.C., and Tonya Blackshire of Glen Daniel.
