Register Herald Obituaries for June 10, 1999 Gregory A. Ashcraft CHARLESTON - Gregory Alan Ashcraft, 43, formerly of Pineville, died Tuesday, June 8, 1999, in a Charleston hospital. Born March 1, 1956, in Morgantown, he was the son of the late Carl and Mary J. McDonnell Ashcraft. Mr. Ashcraft was an engineer with the Office of Environmental Services for the state of West Virginia. He was a member of the Charleston Moose Lodge, Elks Lodge, Charleston Masonic Lodge No. 153, Royal Arch Masons Lodge No. 13, York Rite Bodies No. 4 and Beni Kedem Shrine. Mr. Ashcraft was a graduate of Pineville High School, Class of 1974, and received his bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from West Virginia University. He was a Vietnam Conflict veteran of the U.S. Army. Survivors include his former wife, Kimberly; a daughter, Heather at home; a son, Nathan at home; four brothers, Philip of Glenelg, Md., Michael of Clendenin, Robert of Fairport, N.Y., and Stephen of Lexington, Ky. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church, Pinch, with Father Robert McDonnell as celebrant. Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Masonic Cemetery, Shinnston, where masonic rites will be conducted. Born April 5, 1916, in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Harve Lee Browning and Dora Alice Repass Browning. Mr. Browning had been a resident of Itmann for 46 years and was a retired coal miner, having worked for Consolidation Coal Co. at Itmann for 46 years. He was a member of UMWA Local No. 9690 and Mullens Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Delores Helmandollar Browning; three brothers, Fitzhugh, Woodrow and Garland Browning; and a sister, Pauline Cecil. Survivors include three sons, Shelby Browning and his wife, Barbara, of Ocala, Fla., Roger Browning of Itmann and Mark Browning and his wife, Donna, of Chapel Hill, N.C.; six sisters, Aleta Walker and husband, Ronnie, of Itmann, Deborah Burkett and husband, Harold, of Lashmeet, Janie Woodrum and husband, Raymond, of Itmann, Brenda Osborne and husband, Donald, of Itmann, Trula Jackson of Bastian, Va., and Jennifer Morgan and husband, Aubrey, of Mullens; a sister, Marie Gillenwater of Princeton; 19 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Estep, 54, passed away Tuesday, June 8, 1999, at his residence. Born Oct. 29, 1944, in Paynesville, he was the son of Pearlie Lester Estep of Camp Creek and the late James Estep. Mr. Estep was a former owner of an appliance center and driver for Smith Transfer. He was a member of Berwind Revival Center. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. Other survivors include his wife, Easter Blankenship Estep; two sons, David Estep and Jim Estep, both of Flat Top; two sisters, Mable Scammell of Beckley and Thelma Blevins of Bassett, Va.; and a grandson, Ralph Eugene Estep of Flat Top. Faulkner WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS - Lonnie Wilbur Faulkner, 67, died Tuesday, June 8, 1999, in a Low Moor, Va., hospital following a long illness. Born Nov. 3, 1931, in Greenbrier County, he was the son of the late James and Edna Helen Brooks Faulkner. Mr. Faulkner was a caretaker. Survivors include three daughters, Alma Marie Faulkner of Ronceverte, Catherine Louise Field of Tennessee and Mary Margaret Faulkner of White Sulphur Springs; two sisters, Sylvie Williams of Maxwelton and Catherine Hancock of Norfolk, Va.; a half sister, Alice Groves of Chesapeake, Va.; two half brothers, Roy Keen of Buffalo, N.Y., and Junior Keen of Virginia; and four grandchildren, Joseph Michael Flack, Logan Boone, Natasha Faulkner and Aaron Field. James 'Jim' Goins CLEAR FORK - James Edward "Jim" Goins, 61, died Tuesday, June 8, 1999, in a Charleston hospital following a short illness. Born Dec. 26, 1937, in Marlinton, he was the son of the late George and Ruby Miller Goins. Mr. Goins was employed by the Wyoming County Board of Education as a school bus driver with 12 years of service. He had 18 years' mining experience with Eastern Associated Coal Corp. and worked for the West Virginia Department of Mines in Charleston for 10 years. He was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Jean Goins. Survivors include his wife of 401/2 years, Janet Short Goins; two sons, James Keith Goins and his wife, Rhonda, of Matheny and Jason Goins and his wife, Tracy, of Salisbury, N.C.; two brothers, Larry Lynn Goins of Beaver and William Michael Goins of Charleston; four grandchildren, Erika and Jarrod Goins of Matheny, and Josh and Ashley Goins of Salisbury; and a host of family and friends. "Candy" Horton, 83, of Maple Fork, died Monday, June 7, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born Dec. 27, 1915, in Harlan, Ky., she was the daughter of the late John Bradley Gross Sr. and Cassie Dixoin Gross. Mrs. Horton was a homemaker and of the Christian faith. Survivors include her husband, William Butler Horton of Gainesville, Fla.; three daughters, Betty Daniel and her husband, Bill, of Maple Fork, Joyce Wilson and her husband, Hank, of Old Town, Fla., and Johonnie Lynn Catlett and her husband, Richard Adair, of Maple Fork; a son, Dr. Jerry Fee and his wife, Carolyn, of Montezuma, N.C.; a sister, Ada Guthrie of Belleview, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. Hunter Paul Daniel Hunter, 60, of 223 6th St., Beckley, died Tuesday, June 8, 1999. Born Oct. 17, 1938, in Stanaford, he was the son of the late Raymond Hunter and Leona Allen Hunter. Mr. Hunter was a former heavy equipment salesman and serviceman for Heavy Machines Inc., a member of Beckley Moose Lodge No. 1606 and had been a resident of Beckley most of his life. Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Loretta Clark Hunter; a sister, Patricia Ruth Mares of Venice, Fla.; three nieces; and one nephew. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with Pastor Phillip Lilly officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.
