Register Herald Obituaries for June 11, 1999 Orban D. Bailey CLEVELAND - Orban D. Bailey, 78, formerly of Coal City, died Tuesday, June 8, 1999, at the home of his niece in Beckley following a long illness. Born June 1, 1921, at Rolfe, he was the son of the late Eugene Blake and Phebe Beulah Blankenship Bailey. Mr. Bailey was a salvage inspector for General Motors for 351/2 years. He enjoyed playing golf and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruby Watkins. Survivors include three nieces, Peggy Estep of Beckley, Brenda Hope of Coal City and Phyllis Watkins of Coal City; two nephews, Randy Watkins of Charlotte, N.C., and Ricky Watkins of Roanoke, Va.; and a special great-niece, Lynn Liedel of Jacksonville, Fla. Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Sophia, with the Rev. Gary Eskins officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley. Chikos Sr. LOGAN - Paul Martin Chikos Sr., 83, died Tuesday, June 8, 1999, in a Charleston hospital. Born June 23, 1915, at Elbert, he was the son of the late Stephen Martin Chikos and Julia W. Chikos. Mr. Chikos graduated from Glen Rogers High School in 1933. A World War II veteran, he served in a combat division assigned to Gen. George S. Pattonıs Third Army in Europe. He was a former deacon of First Baptist Church of Beckley and Logan. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Logan. He retired from the U.S. government as a federal mine inspector in 1979. He was preceded in death by his wife, June Dickson Chikos; and a brother, Stephen Chikos. Survivors include a son, Dr. Paul Martin Chikos of Seattle; two daughters, Julia Chikos Harris of Wilton, Conn., Joan Chikos Auchter of Centreville, Va.; a sister, Ann Chikos Sabo of Detroit; and a brother, Dr. Julius Chikos of Detroit. Services will be 11 a.m. today at Honaker Funeral Home, Logan, with the Rev. Oren J. Foust officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Pecks Mill, where military graveside rites will be conducted. Friends called 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Born Nov. 8, 1912, at Bingham, she was the daughter of the late Noah Winston and Bertha McClung Williams. Mrs. Edwards was a member of Highland First Church of God, Rainelle, and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vern Edwards. Survivors include a daughter, Charlotte Longest of Sellersburg, Ind.; five grandchildren, Robert C. Godbey of Williamsburg, Ohio, William Surface of Cincinnati, Elizabeth Shelton Craske of Crawley, Thomas Shelton of North Carolina and Cindy Shelton Carte of South Charleston; a sister, Reva Tucci of Rainelle; a niece, Kitty Stambough of Lake Orion, Mich.; three great-grandchildren, Robert M. Godbey of Pleasant Plain, Ohio, Kathy Stiles of Marion, Ohio, and Crissy Godbey of Cincinnati; and two great-grandchildren, Austin Michael Godbey and Robert Michael Godbey. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Wallace Memorial Mausoleum Chapel, Clintonville, with the Rev. Vondie Cook officiating. Entombment will follow in Wallace Memorial Mausoleum. Myrtle Richards Myrtle Richards, 86, of Shady Spring, died Wednesday, June 9, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born June 5, 1913, at Logan, she was the daughter of the late Wililams Richards and Almentia Wills Richards. Mrs. Richards was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of Shady Spring. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Juanita Hurley. Survivors include a grandson who cared for her, Kenneth "Ricky" Hurley and his wife, Wanda, of Shady Spring; and a brother, Jack Richards of Logan. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Flat Top Road, with Pastor Delvin D. Elwell Jr. officiating. There will be no visitation. Walker ROANOKE, Va. - Gerald Campbell "Shorty" Walker, 76, died Wednesday, June 9, 1999, at a Roanoke hospital from liver complications. Born Oct. 14, 1922, in West Virginia, he was the son of the late Ida and George Walker of Mabscott. Mr. Walker was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He worked for The Charleston Gazette. After moving to Roanoke, he was employed with the George Preas Dairy, a Sealtest distributor, and continued to work in Roanoke as a self-employed painting contractor. He was a member of Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church for 37 years, a life member of the Roanoke Elks Lodge and a 50-year member of the American Legion. He was preceded in death by a sister, Jewell Walker Fitzgerald of Cheyenne, Wyo. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Betty Murdock Walker; sons and daughters-in-law, Randy and Toni Walker and Dana and Peggy Walker, all of Roanoke; daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Dr. John A. Pearson of Raleigh, N.C.; grandchildren, Josha and Huge Pearson and Emily and Nathan Walker; mother-in-law, Lillian Harvey Murdock of Roanoke; a sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Bill Baker of Beckley; a sister-in-law, Patty Schulte of Boomer; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church with Dr. F. Tupper Garden and the Rev. Tom Stocks officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Burial Park.
