Register Herald Obituaries for June 12, 1999 Eva L. Bowman Eva L. Bowman, 89, of 502 N. Kanawha St., Beckley, died at 10:30 p.m. Thursday, June 10, 1999, in a Beckley care center following a long illness. Born June 10, 1910, in Speedway, she was the daughter of the late G.T. Carter and Lue Carter. Mrs. Bowman was a homemaker, a member of Beckley Regular Baptist Church and a 50-year member of the Eastern Star of Coal City. She had been a resident of Raleigh County most of her life and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Bowman, in 1981; and all of her brothers and sisters. Survivors include a son, James Bowman and his wife, Aquilla, of Beckley; and a granddaughter, Connie Patrick and her husband, Charley, of Hamilton, Ohio. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with Pastor Harmon Davis officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Mausoleum, Beckley. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Lloyd, Kenneth and Stephen Phillips and Vincent, Jim, Bob and Harold Daniel. Madrith 'Mattie' Davis CLIFTON SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Madrith "Mattie" Davis, 68, formerly of Crab Orchard, died Friday, May 14, 1999, in a Clifton Springs care center. Born Jan. 21, 1931, in Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Captolia Houck. Ms. Davis had resided in Clifton Springs for the past 19 years. She was preceded in death by her eldest son, Ronald E. Davis, in September 1998 in Rochester, N.Y. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Gladys Houck Goodman of Crab Orchard and Bernice Houck of West Virginia; and two brothers, Howard and Everett Houck. Survivors include two daughters, Joan Pennington and her companion, Timothy Mullin, of Phelps, N.Y., and Judy Blake and her companion, John, of Beckley; a son and his fiancee, Dwayne Davis and Marie Raes of Clifton Springs; a daughter-in-law, Lynn Davis of Rochester; five grandchildren, Sheree Rugenstein of Lyons, N.Y., Charles Pennington of Manchester, N.Y., John Pennington of Clifton Springs, Jimmy Blake Jr. of Prosperity and Ronda Davis of Rochester; three sisters, Judie "Mamaw" Drake of Crab Orchard, Maxine Brizendine of Lester and Willie Scott of Beckley; two great-grandchildren, Jessica and Alyssa Rugenstein; a niece, Mary McEachern; and special cousins, Billy and Desiree McEachern and Crystal Lilly, all of Crab Orchard. Patrick Funeral Home, Clifton Springs. Rev. Garland T. Phillips ALLEN JUNCTION -- The Rev. Garland T. Phillips, 82, died Wednesday, June 9, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born Oct. 17, 1916, in Maben, he was the son of the late William O. and Allie Mae Phillips. The Rev. Phillips was the principal of Herndon Consolidated School for 33 years and served as a teacher and principal in the Wyoming County school system for a total of 51 years. He attended Amigo Baptist Church and was a pastor in several churches in Wyoming County. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Everett and Asher Phillips; a sister, Joy Spencer; two infant sisters; and a great-granddaughter, Elizabeth McKinney. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Wanda Halsey Phillips; a son, the Rev. Ron Phillips and his wife, Margaret, of Bluefield; two daughters, Jean McKinney and her husband, Bill, of Savannah, Ga., and Kay Mullins and her husband, James, of Allen Junction; a sister, Joan Wall of McComb, Miss.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Sophia, with the Revs. Gilbert Dodson and David Pollock officiating. Walker ROANOKE, Va. -- Gerald Campbell "Shorty" Walker, 76, died Wednesday, June 9, 1999, in a Roanoke hospital from liver complications. Born Oct. 14, 1922, in West Virginia, he was the son of the late Ida and George Walker of Mabscott. Mr. Walker was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He worked for The Charleston Gazette in Charleston. After moving to Roanoke, he was employed with George Preas Dairy, a Sealtest distributor and continued to work in Roanoke as a self-employed painting contractor. He was a member of Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church for 37 years, a life member of the Roanoke Elks Lodge and a 50-year member of the American Legion. He was preceded in death by a sister, Jewell Walker Fitzgerald of Cheyenne, Wyo. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Betty Murdock Walker; sons and daughters-in-law, Randy and Toni Walker and Dana and Peggy Walker, all of Roanoke; daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Dr. John A. Pearson of Raleigh, N.C.; four grandchildren, Justin and Paige Pearson and Emily and Nathan Walker; mother-in-law, Lillian Harvey Murdock of Roanoke; a sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Bill Baker of Beckley; a brother and sister-in-law, Lowell and Betty Walker of Beckley; a sister-in-law, Patty Schulte of Boomer; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Born Nov. 19, 1913, in Jewell Ridge, Va., she was the daughter of the late William Joyce and Sally Smith Joyce. She was preceded in death by her husband, Emmett Gilbert Worrell; four brothers; and three sisters. Mrs. Worrell was a homemaker and a member of Primitive Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons, William Mack Worrell Sr. and his wife, Yvonne, of Salem, Va., and Gilbert Worrell and his wife, Sandra, of Daniels; two daughters, Sarah Smith and her husband, Clarence, of Princeton and Irene Kessinger and her husband, Carl Edward, of Camp Creek; nine grandchildren, Tom Smith, Debra Meeks, Greg Worrell, Vera Lilly, Rita Pimer, Carl Edward Kessinger Jr., Jeffery Dean Kessinger, Jane Kiser and William Jack Worrell Jr.; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
