Register Herald Obituaries for June 20, 1999 Hassel J. Blackburn OCEANA - Hassel J. Blackburn, 85, died Thursday, June 17, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born Sept. 28, 1913, in Gulnare, Ky., he was the son of the late James and Myrtle Scott Blackburn. Mr. Blackburn was a retired coal miner and a member of UMWA District 29, Local 7604. He was a member of Delilah United Methodist Church, Oceana, for 55 years and served on Oceana Town Council for several years. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Gay Staton, Ona Ratliff, Faye Leslie and Eulah Stepp; two brothers, Eugene and Ralph Blackburn; and three half brothers, Pete, Tom and Floyd Blackburn. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Lucy Stepp Blackburn; a son, Gary Blackburn and his wife, Loretta, of Oceana; a sister, Helena West of Severn, Md.; two grandsons, Christopher Blackburn and his wife, Tina, and Luke Blackburn all of Oceana; a great-grandson, Garrett Blackburn of Oceana; and several nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Delilah United Methodist Church, Oceana, with the Revs. Tim Conrad, Ralph Whitten and Orville Belcher officiating. Entombment will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Matheny. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at Evans Funeral Home, Oceana, and one hour before services Monday at the church. Bobbie Lewis Bowles SANDSTONE - Bobbie Lewis Bowles, 49, died Friday, June 18, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born Feb. 10, 1950, in Sandstone, he was the son of Mary Ivolene Bowles of Sandstone and the late Daniel Bowles. He was preceded in death by a brother, Billy Bea Bowles; and a sister, Maedell Bowles. Other survivors include a son, Eddie Bowles of Huntington; a daughter, Loretta Minear of Rainelle; a brother Basil Bowles of Hix; and two sisters, Bonnie Cales of Hix and Joyce Bowles Richmond of Kernersville, N.C. Services will be 2 p.m. today at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel, Hinton, with Pastor Felix Baker officiating. Burial will follow in Doc Ward Cemetery, Hix. McDaniel Greer, 92, departed her life on earth to live with God in Heaven on Tuesday, June 15, 1999, following a long illness. Born July 14, 1906, in Berry, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Rebecca McDaniel. Mrs. Greer was of the Baptist faith and had made her home in Hawthorne, Fla., with her son, Tommy Greer, and his wife, Gladys, for the past several years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Greer; a son, James "Jimmy" Greer; and a daughter, Audrey "Bootsie" Drumheller. Survivors include two sons, Thomas Greer and his wife, Gladys, of Hawthorne, Fla., and Kenneth Greer and his wife, Brenda, of Fireco; two daughters, Lola Belle Belcher and her husband, Gene, of Jacksonville, Fla., and Helen Fink and her husband, Jerry, of Crab Orchard; a brother, Glen McDaniel of Beckley; 14 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Born June 13, 1934, at Rock Creek, he was the son of the late Alfred R. and Katie E. Hannah Scarbro. Mr. Scarbro was a retired employee of Cedar Coal Co., Orgas, and a member of the UMWA. His hobbies were boxing, chicken fighting and gardening. He was preceded in death by a brother, William Scarbro; a daughter-in-law, Lisa Scarbro; a granddaughter, Jennifer Scarbro; and a nephew, Billy Roger Scarbro. Alfred Harloe Wills JUMPING BRANCH - Alfred Harloe Wills, 84, died Friday, June 18, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following injuries sustained in an auto accident on June 3, 1999. Born Oct. 25, 1914, in Summers County, he was the son of the late Alfred and Annie Vest Wills. Mr. Wills had lived his entire life in Summers County and attended Little Bluestone Primitive Baptist Church, Jumping Branch. He had worked all of his life in trucking, retiring from Cochran Trucking Co. of Daniels. He was preceded in death by a sister, Lura Mae Cochran; and a brother, Robert Jack Wills. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Blanche Cochran Wills; four daughters, Marinda Shelton and her husband, Martin, of Princeton, Doris Bradberry and her husband, Jimmy, of Hinton, Carolyn Williams and her husband, David, of Jumping Branch and Sheila Crook and her husband, Roy, of Nimitz; eight grandchildren, Randy Shelton, Scott Bradberry, Susan Grose, Sharon Shelton, Tony Williams, Andrea Adkins, Michael Williams and Roy Lee Crook; seven great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Wilfred Wills of Shady Spring, Windell Wills of Crab Orchard and M.B.
