Register Herald Obituaries for June 29, 1999 Lovell Bailey Lovell Bailey, 74, of Beckley, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, June 27, 1999, at his home with his wife and family by his side. Born March 17, 1925 at Beckley, he was the son of Blanche Bailey of Beckley and the late Guy Bailey. Mr. Bailey was an employee of New River Coal Co., a member of Open Bible Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, trustee, and Sunday school superintendent and Sunday school teacher. He loved to fish and hunt and was a member of Happy Times Hunting Club. Mr. Bailey was a World War II U.S. Ñavy veteran and a member of the UMWA. He was preceded in death by a brother, Elvyn Bailey and a sister, Jewell Honaker. Other survivors include his wife of 53 years, Rosemary Young Bailey of Beckley; his mother-in-law, Letitia Young of Florida; two sons, Gary Bailey and his wife, Pam, of Beckley, and David Bailey and his wife, Brenda, of Texas; a daughter, Diana Fox and her husband, Roger, of Beckley; a brother, Delbert Bailey and his wife, Reva, of Beckley; three sisters, Gloria Mae Moll and her husband, Howard, of Michigan, Geraldine Roscano and her husband, Tom, of Michigan, Noma Jean Aldridge and her husband, David, of California; two grandsons, Jeff "J.R." Fox and his wife, Leigh Ann, of Beckley, and Nicholas Bailey of Florida; a granddaughter, Alison Bailey of Florida; several nieces and nephews and many loved ones, friends and neighbors. Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with Pastor Rodney Allen and Pastor Roger Pauley officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Friends may call 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Lancer Cozort OCEANA <\m> Lancer Cozort, 80, formerly of Belding, Mich., died Monday, June 28, 1999, in a Beckley medical center following a short illness. Born May 25, 1919, at Tipple, he was the son of the late Payton Cozort and Eva Shumate Cozort Cook. Mr. Cozort was a retired plant worker having worked for Indian Summer Inc. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having received the Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Ribbon, American Defense Medal and four Bronze Battle Stars. He was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey Cozort; two brothers, Argyle and Oswald Cozort and a sister, Elda Cozort Manning. Survivors include four sons, Brian, Phillip, Alan and Greg Cozort, all of Greenville, Mich.; two daughters, Lillian Silverthorn of Montville, Conn., and Virginia Cozort of Greenville, Mich.; numerous grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Evans Funeral Home Chapel, Oceana, with the Rev. Roger Holcomb officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny. Born Aug. 24, 1943, at Josephine, she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Piney Cole Bucchi. Mrs. Cunningham was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Joe Lee, Larry Steven and Patrick Bucchi and a sister, Mary Francis Bucchi. Survivors include her husband, John D. Cunningham; a son, Anthony Scott Cunningham and his wife, Miranda, of Josephine, and a granddaughter, Erica Suzette Cunningham of Josephine. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Jenny Cole Cemetery, Odd, with the Rev. Charlie Bolen officiating. Friends will serve as pallbearers. Born July 25, 1921, at Killarney, in Wyoming County, he was the son of the late Carlos B. and Inez Flack Garten. Mr. Garten was a World War II U.S. Air Force veteran. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Police, and was the first officer having retired from the Lewisburg Police Department, where he served for 25 years and retired with the rank of Sergeant. Survivors include his wife, Joy Fox Garten; a daughter, Paula Ann Mulford of Richmond, Va.; a son, Edward Dale Garten of Dayton, Ohio; a sister, Dorothy MacKinnen of Lakeworth, Fla.; a brother, Magee H. Garten of Lewisburg; and four grandchildren. Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Wallace Memorial Mausoleum, Clintonville, with the Rev. Houston Boothe officiating. Herman "Bus" Hughes Herman "Bus" G. Hughes, 85, of Sophia, died Sunday, June 27, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born Dec. 29, 1913, at Tams, he was the son of the late Robert P. and Nancy Miriah Bowyer Hughes. Mr. Hughes was a retired coal miner and a member of the Sophia First Baptist Church. He was a member of the UMWA Local No. 6105, and had last worked for Westmoreland Coal Company at Riffe Branch. Mr. Hughes was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Robert, Webb, Ed and Jack Hughes; and a sister, Doris Messina. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Mildred "Minnie" Lusk Hughes; a daughter, Evelyn "Janie" Mabrey and her husband, Rick, of Midway; two grandchildren, Tammy Treadway and her husband, Jeff, of Midway and Cindy Stafford and her husband, Steve, of Scott Ridge Road, Beaver; and two great-grandchildren, Brandon Treadway of Midway, and Seth Stafford of Scott Ridge Road, Beaver. James "J.R." Kouns BRUNSWICK, Ohio <\m> James Raymond "J.R." Kouns, 56, formerly of Stickney, died Saturday, June 26, 1999, in a Parma, Ohio, hospital following an apparent heart attack. Born Oct. 9, 1942, at Hitchens, Ky., he was the son of Iona Broome Kouns of Stickney, and the late Clayton Kouns. Mr. Kouns was a retired machinist for S & C Electric Co. in Chicago. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Sally Kouns; a daughter, Kathleen Himes; and three brothers, Boyd, Lewis and Lawrence Kouns. Other survivors include his wife, Julia Brunside Arnold Detamore Kouns of Brunswick; a daughter, Mrs. Michael (Lynda) Michael of Stickney; three sisters, Wilma Workman of North Ridgeville, Ohio, Belva Kiser of Point Pleasant, and Pam Daniel of Whitesville; two brothers, Charles Kouns of Talcott, and J.P.
