Register Herald Obituaries for March 10, 2000 Robert B. Adkins ELIZABETH, N.J. - Robert B. Adkins, 75, formerly of Hinton, died Monday, March 6, 2000, in Elizabeth following a short illness. Born March 14, 1924, in Upland, he was the son of the late Jessie Joe and Maybell Buckland Adkins. Mr. Adkins was a retired truck driver and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, receiving the Bronze Star and other medals while in Italy. He was a Presbyterian. Survivors include his wife, Raymonde Seels Adkins; a brother, Jackie Joe Adkins of Hazlett, N.J.; three sisters, Nellie Turk of Edgewater, Md., Helen Adkins of Hinton and Margie Ptaszynski of Sunbury, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews. At the request of the deceased, the body was cremated. Burial will follow at a later date. Information submitted by Pivont Funeral Home, Hinton. ---------- Donna Marie Asbury Donna Marie Asbury, 76, of Slab Fork, went to be with her Lord Tuesday, March 7, 2000, at her home following a short illness. Born Sept. 28, 1923, in Sun, she was the daughter of the late Edwawrd and Edith Turner Holstein. Mrs. Asbury spent her childhood in Brooklyn, was a five-year resident of Slab Fork and was a longtime resident of Sophia. She was a faithful member of Hotchkiss Church of God and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Edward Asbury; and a son, Charles Edward Asbury. Survivors include four daughters, Bonnie Meador and her husband, Lamer, of Crab Orchard, Carol Asbury of Slab Fork, Lawanda "Bunny" Cooper and her husband, Ralph, of Slab Fork and Phyllis Gross and her husband, Calvin, of Crab Orchard; three sons, Rodger Asbury and his wife, Stella, of Harper Heights, Lawrence "Jack" Asbury and his wife, Debra, of Slab Fork and Gary Asbury and his wife, Donna, of Slab Fork; a daughter-in-law, Maxine "Jeanie" Asbury of Crab Orchard; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Hotchkiss Church of God with the Rev. David Wall officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Beckley. Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today at Melton Mortuary, Beckley, and one hour before services Thursday at the church. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. Arrangements by Melton Mortuary, Beckley. ---------- Elmer E. Cannady ITMANN - Elmer E. Cannady, 70, died Tuesday, March 7, 2000, at his home following a short illness. Born May 2, 1929, in Freeman, he was the son of the late Morton and Laura Taylor Cannady. Mr. Cannady had been a resident of Itmann since 1951, was a retired coal miner with 41 years of service, having last worked for Itmann Coal Co., and was a Korean Conflict veteran. He was a 49-year resident of Itmann. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Minnie Cannady and Alice Macklay; and two brothers, Luther and Melvin Cannady. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Shirley Cook Cannady; two sons, Ralph Cannady and his wife, Molly, of Beckley and Jerry Cannady and his wife, Robin, of Mullens; six grandchildren, Chris Cannady of Charlotte, N.C., Chuck Cannady and his wife, April, of Charlotte, Amy and Stephanie Cannady of Mullens, Cindy Maples and her husband, Daniel, of Cleveland and Mary Beth Cannady of Oceana; two stepgrandchildren, Alice and her husband, Lee Dawson, of Beckley and Dan and his wife, Jennifer Jones, of Beckley; a great-grandchild, Joel Cannady of Pineville; and two stepgreat-grandchildren, Jeremy and Maggie Dawson, both of Beckley. Services will be noon Thursday at First Pentecostal Holiness Church of Mullens with the Rev. Lewis Arnold officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton. Born June 23, 1911, in Glen White, he was the son of the late John and Mary Flynn. Mr. Flynn was owner and operator of Beckley Garbage Disposal, Flynn's Economy Grocery, Flynn's Produce Market and Flynn's Recreation Center. He was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church and was president of the Beckley Civic League and chairman of the March of Dimes in 1971. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lelia Brown Flynn; a son, John Edward Flynn; two sisters, Helen Flynn Boffman and Frances Flynn Foy; and a brother, John W. Flynn. Survivors include a son, Junuis Flynn Jr. of Cleveland; a daughter, Leola Toles of Cleveland; a daughter-in-law, Zenobia Flynn of Beckley; nine grandchlidren; 12 great-grandchildren; and four sisters-in-law. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Mount Zion Baptist Church, Beckley, with the Rev. Nelson Staples Jr. and Elder Luther Hairston officiating.
