Register Herald Obituaries for March 14, 2000 James Bragg James Bragg, 73, of Lanark, went to be with the Lord, Saturday, March 11, 2000, in a Charleston hospital following a short illness, and surrounded with the love of his family. Born May 7, 1927, at Sandstone, he was the son of the late Okey V. and Leona Meadows Bragg. Mr. Bragg was a retired coal miner of 30 years for the New River Coal Co. and was the owner of E and B Construction Co. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Leonard Bragg and Okey Bragg Jr. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Humphrey Bragg; and their children, Wilma Jean Lekan and husband, Frank, of Waldorf, Md., Sue Sutyak and husband, Mike, of Beckley, Buster Bragg and wife, Paula, of Lanark; nine grandchildren, Michelle, Cindy, Lisa, Kim, Candy, Tina, Samantha, Jennifer and James Paul; three great-grandchildren, Kelcey, Alexandra and Isaac; two brothers, Charles W. Bragg and Lige Bragg and wife, JoAnn, of Vero Beach, Fla.; and five sisters, Juanita Kincaid of Lawton, Gay Quesenberry of Daniels, Lorraine Hungate and husband, Dale, of Athens, Eudora Hambrick and husband, Pat, of Fayetteville, and Mildred Craddock and husband, Colin, of Elyria, Ohio. Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel with Mr. Bragg's nephew, Lee Dunbar, officiating. Burial will follow in the Bragg Cemetery, Richmond District near Sandstone. Utt Cadle, 70, of Amigo, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, March 12, 2000, following a short illness. Born Oct. 3, 1929, at Sophia, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Ophelia Richard Utt. Mrs. Cadle was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Cadle; six brothers, Harold, Wayne, Phillip, Harry, Ronald and Emmett Utt; two sisters, Chrisella Smith and Geneva Utt; two sons, George and Randy Cadle; and three grandchildren. Born May 9, 1959, at Oak Hill, he was a son of Jackie Jeana Lee Vandall and stepfather Russell Franklin Vandall of Oak Hill. Mr. Hinkle was a construction worker and was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Hersey and Carrie Hinkle. Arrangements by Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope. ---------- Dr. Harwood James Dr. Benjamin Harwood James, 97, of Daniels and Beaver, died Sunday, March 12, 2000, after a long and full life. Born Sept. 2, 1902, in Pulaski, Va., he was the son of the late Benjamin Carter and Ellen Harwood James. Dr. James spent his childhood in Bluefield, Va. He received his medical degree from Kirksville College of Osteopathy at Kirksville, Mo. He began his medical career in Beckley in 1927, and his office was in the Lilly Building on Main Street for many years. Dr. James was a lifetime member of the WV Osteopathic Association and during his life was active in the First Baptist Church of Beckley, where he taught Fellowship Sunday School class. He was a resident of Belwood Farms since 1958 and was strong in his Christian faith and dedicated his life for others; he was formerly active in civic organizations in Beckley. In later years, he was known for his ability for great story telling, especially about incidents occurring during his practice with a great sense of humor. He was the last member of his immediate family. He was preceded in death by his wife, whom he married in 1934, Belva Elliot James, who died Feb. 17, 1995, who was an avid bird watcher and along with Dr. James enjoyed watching the birds. Survivors include a son, Ben James and wife, Pam, of Fort Collins, Colo.; a daughter, Carolyn Cowan and husband, Harry, of New Orleans, La.; two granddaughters, Ashley James and Beckey Patterson; two grandsons, Ben James IV and Tyler James; and two special nieces, Ellen Anderson and husband, Paul, and Beverly Trail. Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. David Trump officiating. Private burial will follow. Born Feb. 14, 1917, at Page, he was the son of the late William Russell and Emma Maude Rinehart Nickell. Mr. Nickell was a retired coal miner having worked for Eastern Gas and Fuel at Herndon. He was a member of the Oak Hill United Methodist Church and the UMWA. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Russell and Lloyd Nickell. Survivors include his wife, Josephine Bukant Nickell; two daughters, Pamela Jo Smelcer of Panama City, Fla., and Paula Jean Nickell of Dunbar; three brothers, Charles Nickell of Kimberling City, Mo., Don Nickell of Seville, Ohio, and Virgil Nickell of Liberty, S.C.; and two sisters, Beulah Tabor of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Deloris Jean Nickell of Fort Walton Beach, Fla. Born March 6, 1929, at Streeter, he was the son of the late Newburn and Vada Pack. Mr. Pack was a retired timberman and construction worker, and was a member and deacon of the Little Bluestone Primitive Baptist Church at Jumping Branch. He had made his home at Blue Jay for most of his adult life. He was preceded in death by a brother, Freddie Pack. Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Cadle Pack; two daughters, Goldie Gwinn and husband, Charles, of Grandview, and Sylvia Wolfe and husband, Stephen, of Smithfield, N.C.; two sisters, Evelyn Maley of Canton, Ohio, and Louise Farley of Rock; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two special grandchildren "of the heart" Derreck Severt and Candy Senopole; and two foster children, Cindy Looney of Parma, Ohio, and Ronnie Lilly of Fairview Heights, Ohio.
