Register Herald Obituaries for March 22, 2000 Anne Blair Alderson LEWISBURG - Anne Blair Alderson, 79, died Saturday, March 18, 2000, at her home following a long illness. Mrs. Alderson was the daughter of George Price Alderson and Lydia Comstock Alderson, formerly of Charleston. She was a graduate of University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and held a master's degree in social work from the University of Kansas. She was the founding director of the Greenbrier Valley Mental Health Clinic in Lewisburg, now known as Seneca Health Services. She retired in 1979. Mrs. Alderson was an enthusiastic cook, traveler, gardener and supporter of the arts and social causes. She was cherished by her family and her many friends for her warmth, colorful personality, flair and irrepressible joie de vie. Survivors include a sister, Lydia Alderson Preston of Washington, D.C., and Lewisburg; her nephew, George Coleman Alderson of Walkertown, N.C.; her nieces, Lydia Preston Hicks of Alexandria, Va., Elizabeth Montgomery Preston of Los Angeles, Calif., Laura Anne Kearns of Decatur, Ga.; a nephew, Thomas Kearns of Columbus, Ga.; six grandnieces and grandnephews. Services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home, Lewisburg, followed by interment at Rosewood Cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Bare UNION - Lucy S. Bare, 100, died Monday, March 20, 2000, in the Greenbrier Manor Nursing Home, Fairlea, following a long illness. Born Oct. 2, 1899, in Tazewell County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Walter T. and LaVicie Brooks Skelton. Mrs. Bare was a member of the St. Johns United Methodist Church at Salt Sulphur Springs, a member of the Union Chapter No. 122 Order of the Eastern Star and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, C. Camden Bare, on Feb. 21, 1962; a daughter, Mary Mohler, in 1986; six brothers and two sisters. Survivors include two sons, Walter C. Bare and wife, Virginia, of Dyer, Tenn., and Richard C. Bare and wife, Freeda, of Mims, Fla.; a daughter, Fannie Upton of Alderson; a foster daughter, Drucilla Honaker of Ronceverte; 15 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and 20 great-great-grandchildren. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Broyles-McGuire Funeral Home Chapel, Union, with Pastor Timothy Dillon and family members officiating. Burial will follow in the Green Hill Cemetery, Union. Menarchik OAK HILL - Irma Marie Ransom Menarchik, 72, died Sunday, March 19, 2000, at her home following a long illness. Born June 5, 1927, at Redstar, she was the daughter of the late Ambrose Lee and Lula Cochran Ransom. Mrs. Menarchik was a homemaker and a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles George "Charlie" Menarchik. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Diana Menarchik of Oak Hill; a brother, Cledis Ransom of Oak Hill; a sister, Beulah Houck of Oakton, Va.; a granddaughter, Sally Cox; and three great-grandchildren. Mitchell Mrs. Ritinella O. Glashen Mitchell, 87, of 1211 S. Fayette St., Beckley, died of natural causes Friday, March 17, 2000, in the Sunbridge Pine Lodge Care Center, Beckley. Born March 8, 1913, in Colombia, South America, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Glashen. Mrs. Mitchell was a school teacher; she attended Tuskegee University and taught for many years in the Raleigh County school system including Byrd Prillerman, Clear Fork and Park Junior High schools. She retired in May 1976. She was a member and secretary of The Spiritual United Church of Christ Zion in Beckley, and attended Jehovah's Witnesses Kingdom Hall. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon H. Mitchell, on Oct. 1, 1997. Survivors include three daughters, Joan Colvin and her husband, Robert, of Beckley, Verna K. Thompson of Hamilton, N.J., and Lilac E. Mitchell of Detroit, Mich.; six grandchildren, Linda M. Haney of Beckley, Michael A. Brown of Dorvaville, Ga., Robert O. Colvin of Columbus, Ohio, Lynette Bennett of Mercerville, N.J., Kandisha Thompson of Yonkers, N.Y., and Celeste Mitchell of St. Paul, Minn.; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Hazel Bullivant of New York City; and a host of other relatives and friends. Murphy MOUNT HOPE - Wanda Arbutus Murphy, 65, formerly of Ravenswood, departed this life March 18, 2000, at her home following an extended illness. Born May 2, 1934, at Jamoco, she was the daughter of the late Leslie and Myrtle Smith Hudnall. Mrs. Murphy was a retired part-time nurse, member of Wilding United Methodist Church, Ravenswood, and assisted her husband of 46 years, the Rev. Harold R. Murphy, with pastoring the Mount Hope circuit of the United Methodist Conference. She was preceded in death by a brother, Clifford Hudnall; two sisters, Mae Goodwin and Edith Pomeroy; and a granddaughter, Samantha C. Haynes. In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, Edward Harold Murphy of Mount Hope; daughters, Debbie Keffer and Kathy Ann Murphy, both of Ravenswood; sisters, Luana Hudnall of Dry Branch, Goldie Thompson of South Charleston, Ina Floyd of Wellston, Ohio, Stella Lovette of Pine Knot, Ky., and Phyllis Hamilton of Tampa, Fla.; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Born Sept. 12, 1909, at Sugar Grove, she was the daughter of the late Abraham and Panie Pittsenbarger Nutter. Mrs. Neal was a homemaker and had lived most of her life in Rainelle. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorothy Rogers, in 1993; two sons, Michael Neal in 1982 and Herbert Nutter in 1991; and her husband, William Alpha Neal, in 1987. Survivors include three daughters, Charlotte Rogers of Corliss, Hallie M. Haynes of Nallen, and Mary E. Parsons of Fredericksburg, Va.; five sons, David Neal of Quinwood, Bennie Ray Neal of Runa, Lee Roy Neal of Drennan, Tommy Neal of Orient Hill, and Abraham Neal of Mount Lookout; a sister, Hollie Nutter of Nettie; a brother, Causby Cheatley of Lindenwold, N.J.; 33 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Born June 15, 1906, at Cranberry, she was the daughter of the late Everett Curtis and Olevia Stover Curtis. Mrs. Rapp was last employed by Pinecrest Hospital, and was a 1925 graduate of Beckley High School. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by eight brothers. Survivors include two sons, Thomas Rapp and his wife, Carol, of Skelton, and Bob Rapp and his wife, Reba, of Oklawaha, Fla.; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Committal services and entombment will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum with Pastor Edward Garten officiating.
