Beverly CHARLESTON - Robert Earl Beverly, 80, formerly of Scarbro, died Tuesday, March 21, 2000, in Beverly Healthcare Center, Glasgow, following a long illness. Born Sept. 13, 1919, in West Virginia, he was the son of the late Emmett and Alice Virginia Shifflett Beverly. Mr. Beverly was a retired coal miner, having worked for Milburn Colliery at Milburn. He was of the Protestant faith and a member of the United Mine Workers of America, District 29. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie Woodson Beverly; and a daughter, Sharon Richmond. Survivors include three sons, Robert L. Beverly of Cleveland, Randy Beverly of Beckley and Timothy Beverly of North Carolina; two daughters, Julie Taggart of Gary, Ind., and Cathie Hershey of Charleston; a brother, Edward Beverly of Cleveland; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with an eulogy by Hilda Perry. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill. Duran Sr., 76, of Ghent, formerly of St. Albans, died Tuesday, March 21, 2000, in Care Haven of Daniels following a long illness. Born July 23, 1923, in Chicago, he was the son of the late Charles S. Duran and Catherine Engle Duran. Mr. Duran was of the Catholic faith and a member of Moose Lodge No. 565, Nitro. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict. He was the former owner of Duran's Grocery in Tornado for 15 years. Survivors include a daughter, Diane Dixon of Ghent; a son, Richard Charles Duran Jr. of St. Albans; two grandchildren, Brandy and Buddy Dixon, both of Beckley; a great-granddaughter, Tiffany Dixon of Beckley; and a brother, Vincent Duran of Darien, Ill. Holstine, 44, died Monday, March 20, 2000, in Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, following a short illness. Born Aug. 20, 1955, in Oak Hill, he was the son of Dorothy Lee Cody Holstine of Oak Hill and the late Robert Earl Holstine. Mr. Holstine was a mechanic with the Fayette County Board of Education for 25 years and a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, Fayetteville, and the Fayetteville Fire Department. Survivors include his wife, Lynn Cottrell Holstine; a son, Brian Belmont and his fiance, Lisa Shiels, of Lakehurst, N.J.; a daughter, Christina Moore and her husband, Keith, of Kingstree, S.C.; two brothers, Bill Holstine and John Holstine and his wife, Melissa, all of Fayetteville; three nieces, Karrie, Shay and Hannah; and four nephews, Kevin, Jeremy, Timothy and John. Born March 8, 1948, in Simon, he was the son of Dorothy Combs Kenneda of Hanover and the late Edgar Kenneda. Mr. Kenneda was a general laborer and member of Apostolic House of Faith, Simon. He was preceded in death by two infant sisters, Margie Kenneda and Karen Kenneda. Other survivors include his wife, Cindy Rock Kenneda; two sons, Robbie Kenneda of Simon and Earl Joe Jr. and his wife, Lisa, of Glen Rogers; a daughter, Charlotte Smitherman and her husband, David, of Oceana; a stepdaughter, Shannon Keneda and her husband, Ralph, of Simon; a stepson, Tommy Lawrence of Detroit; seven grandchildren, Sierra Kennedy, Justin Smitherman, Hannah Smitherman, Kayla Kenneda, Christopher Kenneda, Jonathan Lawrence and Angel King; three brothers, Okey Kenneda and his wife, Sylvia, of Glen Fork, Ervin Kenneda of Thomasville, N.C., and Eddie Kenneda of Hanover; and five sisters, Freda Lusk and her husband, Boyd, of Kopperston, Patricia Cline and her husband, Larry, of Oceana, Kathy Steeles of Oceana, Virginia Brooks and her husband, Otis, of Simon and Virgie Morgan of Hanover. Manley ROANOKE, Va. - Ethel Mae Franklin Manley, 87, formerly of Mount Hope, died Tuesday, March 21, 2000. Born June 30, 1912, in Bossevain, Va., she was the daughter of the late Annie Lee Vernon Franklin and John Everett Franklin. Mrs. Manley had lived most of her life in West Virginia and was a former member of the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband, John M. Manley; and three sisters, Virginia Davis, Gladys Lester and Vivian Owens. Survivors include a brother, Everett Franklin of Sacramento, Calif.; three sisters, Hazel Cook of Belhaven, N.C., Mildred Hash of Chester, Va., and Maxine Wojak of Denver; and a sister-in-law, Louise Hollenbeck of Merritt Island, Fla. Born July 24, 1938, in Bud, he was the son of the late Claude F. Maynard Sr. and Edna Lester Maynard. Mr. Maynard was a retired road construction worker. He was a member of the Beckley Moose Lodge and Teamsters Union, and had been a resident of Beckley most of his life. He was preceded in death by a brother, Gid Maynard. Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Nyla Alley Maynard; a son, Steve Maynard and his wife, Heather, of Beckley; three daughters, Leigh Stover and her husband, Raymond, of Beckley, Lee Ann Lowe and her husband, James, of Beckley and Heather Meadows and her husband, Don, of Beckley; three brothers, Jim Maynard of Covel, Fred Maynard of Beckley and Jess Maynard of Bud; two sisters, Louise Hatter of Amherst, Va., and Linda Arcidy of Bedford, N.H.; and three grandchildren, Steven Maynard and J.R. and Zach Lowe. "Sis" Simmons, 86, died Monday, March 20, 2000, at Greenbrier Manor, Fairlea, following an extended illness. Born Aug. 14, 1913, in Hinton, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson and Julia Sidney Twohig Simmons. Miss Simmons was retired from the federal Bureau of Prisons, having retired June 30, 1975, as a lieutenant correctional officer from the Federal Reformatory For Women, Alderson, after 29-plus years of service. Prior to her emmployement with the prison system, she was a Greenbrier County school teacher, having taught at Fort Spring and Snowflake for 10 years. She attended Alderson public schools and was a 1932 graduate of Alderson High School. She attended Armstrong Junior College, Alderson, and graduated from Marshall College, Huntington, with a Bachelor of Science degree. Miss Simmons was a member of Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church, Alderson, where she had served as leader of the Epworth League and a former chairman of the Heritage Circle, and was very active in numerous church activities. She was a member of the Alderson Woman's Club, had been very active in 4-H activities in Greenbrier County and was a member of the 4-H Allstars. She was preceded in death by a brother, Hubert O. Simmons. Survivors include a brother, Bill T. Simmons and his wife, Frances, of Alderson; two nephews, Dr. Michael R. Simmons and his wife, Pamela, of Baltimore and W. Thomas Simmons and his wife, Belinda, of Princeton; two nieces, Julia Simmons Shafer and her husband, Allen, of Lewisburg and Margaret Lynn Simmons of Alderson; and three great-nieces, Laura Simmons of Baltimore and Brittany Simmons and Jessica Simmons, both of Princeton. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Lobban Funeral Home Chapel, Alderson, with the Rev. BillyReed Wickline officiating. Burial will follow in Alderson Cemetery.
