Register Herald Obituaries for March 28, 2000 Gregory E. Deck Gregory E. Deck, 37, of Beckley, died Friday, March 24, 2000, at Raleigh General Hospital from injuries sustained at work. Born June 27, 1962, in Beckley, he was the son of Pete Deck of Daniels, and Doris Pennington Totten and stepfather Paul Totten of Beckley. Mr. Deck was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and was a 14-year veteran of the U.S. Army, serving as a sergeant in Special Forces. He was employed by Eastern Asphalt Co. in Beckley, was a firefighter with the Mabscott Volunteer Fire Department, and was of the Methodist faith. He was preceded in death by a sister, Vicki Jean Deck; maternal grandmother Mattie Pennington; and paternal grandparents Ruth Deck Perdue and Clyde Deck. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn McMurray Deck; his unborn son, Gregory Deck Jr.; four daughters, Samantha Harvey and Bethany Deck, both of Beckley, Holly Deck of Holton, Kan., and Savannah Deck of Manheim, Pa.; eight stepchildren, Wanda Shrewsberry of Beaver, and Christopher, Jonathan, Kelly, Devin, Samantha, Dean and Adam Shrewsberry; a sister, Jennifer Deck of Macungie, Pa.; a stepsister, Vici Bolt of MacArthur; maternal grandfather, Willard Pennington of Beckley; and a stepgrandson, Thomas Shrewsbury of Beaver. Services, including Full Fireman's Honors, will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, with the Rev. Jim Reed officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity. Friends may call 5 to 9 p.m. today at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley. Members of the local volunteer fire department will serve as pallbearers, and co-workers will serve as honorary pallbearers. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Oak Hill VFW Post 3110. Arrangements by Rose and Quesenberry, Beckley. ---------- ---------- Frank James Jones Sr. Frank James Jones Sr., 80, died Saturday, March 25, 2000, at Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol, Tenn. Born May 5, 1919, at Gatewood, he was the son of the late Beulah Clayton Jones and Hattie Blanche Martin Jones, and was preceded in death by his brothers, Okie, Robert, Elbert, Gene and Delbert, and sisters Mary Cyrus, Oretha Crookshanks, and Melda Dotson. Mr. Jones was a member of the Lilly Valley Independent Baptist Church, Rainelle, and proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II. During his long life, some of Mr. Jones's jobs included working as a farmer, miner, lumber-yard worker at Meadow River Lumber Co., nurseryman at the Wood-Howell Nursery, and road-construction worker. He last worked as a cook at Jacob's Creek Job Corps Center in Bristol. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Katie Virginia Whaley Jones; four children, Frank J. Jones Jr. of Bristol, David Clayton Jones of Meadow Bridge, Sandra Ruth Jones of Bristol, and Douglas Eugene Jones and daughter-in-law Belva Cox Jones of Meadow Bridge; "adopted son and daughter" Bill and Lisa Trout of Sumter, S.C.; several nieces and nephews, and several brothers- and sisters-in-law. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Smathers Funeral Home Chapel in Rainelle, with the Rev. Don Bean officiating. Burial will follow in the Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville. His nephews will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Garth Gunter, Sam Boggs, Clifford Simms, Steve Gunter, Aubrey Gwinn, Dr. Marcus Williams, Dr. Tom Green, Dr. John Green, Dr. Baron, Dr. Sudip Roy, Jimmy Phipps, and Ron Harris.
