Born May 21, 1920, at Cirtsville, she was the daughter of the late Ramey E. and Georgie Pearl Howard Painter. Mrs. Bowyer was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Owal Bowyer, and a brother, Harry L. Painter. Survivors include five daughters, Wilda Archie and Helen Daniel, both of Harper, Louise Honaker of Harper Heights, Linda Chapman of Crab Orchard, and Delma Vance of Mt. Hope; five sons, Jerry Bowyer and Jim Bowyer, both of Cirtsville, Charles O. Bowyer, Jr. of Maple Fork, Danny Bowyer of Sweeneysburg and Charles Robert Bowyer of Harper Heights; four sisters, Elsie Wilkerson of Maple Fork, Margaret Janney of Weirwood, and Brenda Workman and Polly Painter, both of Ocala, Fla.; 21 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Tyree Funeral Home Chapel, Mt. Hope, with the Revs. Sam Vance and John Daniel officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity. Cooper, 76, of White Oak, died Friday, April 30, 1999, at a Beckley medical center following a long illness. Born Jan. 8, 1923, at Lilly, Summers County, he was the son of the late J.G. ÒJackÓ Cooper and Mamie Grayson Cooper. Mr. Cooper graduated from Hinton High School and was a WWII veteran, having served in the U.S. Army as a medical technician. He had been a resident of White Oak since 1948. He was preceded in death by a sister, Orda Danese Farley, three brothers, John D., Zachariah Dawson, and Delmer J. Cooper. Survivors include a sister Beulah Dean Cooper of Baltimore; a niece, Janna Lois Kirkwood of Huntsville, Ala.; two nephews, Melvin Cooper and his wife, Catherine, of New Park, Pa., and Larry Cooper and his wife, Juanita, of Sacramento, Calif.; special friends and caregivers with whom he made his home for the past year, Rosenell Lilly and Frank Boone. "Johnny" Gunther, 61, of 222 Glen Ave., Beckley, died Thursday, April 29, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born Aug. 21, 1937, in Mabscott, he was the son of the late Colonel Harry and Bessie Mitchell Gunther. Mr. Gunther was presently the owner and operator of GuntherÕs Bookkeeping and Tax Service on North Oakwood Avenue, Beckley. He was formerly employed by the Carolina Supermarket from 1955-1968, and was the former owner and operator of GuntherÕs Supermarket, Beckley, from 1969-1987. After spending his childhood at Mount Tabor, he graduated from Mount Tabor Christian High School in 1955. He was a member of the Beckley Church of God, South Kanawha Street, Beckley, and had been a Beckley resident for the past 30 years. He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Gunther. Survivors include his wife of nearly 41 years, Hazel Wray Gunther; five children, twins, Elaine Lilly and her husband, Leon, of Cool Ridge, and Sr. Master Sgt. John Dwayne Gunther and his wife, Staff Sgt. Meadows Teddy P. Meadows, 87, of Shady Spring, died Saturday, May 1, 1999, in a local hospital of natural causes. Born Sept. 14, 1911, at Beaver, he was the son of the late John C. and Vada Wood Meadows. Mr. Meadows was a lifelong resident of Raleigh County. He was a retired outside electrician from Westmoreland Coal Co. He was a member of the Shady Spring First Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, choir leader, and was a member of the MenÕs Fellowship of the church. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Arlene Walker Meadows; two brothers, Columbus and Paul Meadows; four sisters, Edna Harvey, Nadia Walker, Charity Turner, and Darlene Bahr. Survivors include his wife, Ruby E. Richmond Meadows, of Shady Spring; three sons, Damon G. Meadows and his wife, Carol, of Joppa, Md., Jackie L. Oscar Thomas Moore, 79, of 310 Clyde St., Beckley, died Thursday, April 29, 1999, in a Beckley hospital. Born Sept. 10, 1919, at Turkey Knob, he was the son of Mary Mills of Silver Springs, Md., and the late Bertram Moore. The Rev. Moore was a coal miner, having worked in Summerlee mines for 10 years. He was pastor of New Hope Baptist Church for the past 20 years, vice moderator of the New River Valley Baptist Association, a member of the board of trustees of the W.Va. Baptist State Convention, the public relations board of Federal Prisons, NAACP, Beckley Postal Customers Advisory Council, the board of directors of Citizens for Decency, served as chaplain at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital, chairman of the Appalachian Regional Healthcare Council, board member of the Beckley Human Rights Commission, an organizer of the Outreach Commission for Shut-ins, a member of the broadcasting crew of WWNR, the first African-American title clerk for the Department of Motor Vehicles, a former member of the OIC staff in Charleston, a former member of Charleston Civitan Club, a former pastor at Levi Baptist Church of Rand, Riverview Baptist Church, Charleston, and New Salem Baptist Church, Tams, a former member of Just Rite Masonic Lodge No. 27, King Evers Consistery No. 305, and Ramadan Shrine Temple No. 127 of Harlem Heights. He was preceded in death by one son, Oscar Thomas Moore Jr., one brother, Leroy Moore, and two sisters, Claretta Goode and Larcenia Moore. Danie Plumley Danie Plumley, 78, of 205 Reservoir Road, Beckley, died Friday, April 30, 1999, in a Beckley area medical center following a long illness. Born March 27, 1921, at Alpoca, he was the son of the late John H. and Allie Plumley Gordon. Mr. Plumley was a retired salesman for Corey Candy Co. with 41 years of service. He was also a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving aboard a destroyer in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans as a gunnerÕs mate first class. He was also a member of Crab Orchard Baptist Church, where he served as an usher, trustee and member of the Friendship Sunday school class. He was recognized by the church for 47 years of service for lawn beautification at the church. He was also a lifetime member of the Beckley Moose Lodge and a Beckley resident for most of his life. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Hester Riffe Plumley, and his second wife, Gloria L. Plumley, one brother, Paris James Plumley, and a sister, Ethel Plumley Gurash. Survivors include one son, David Plumley of Beckley; one stepson, Jamey ÒToneyÓ Conley and his wife, Marsha, of Huntington; one brother, Arnold Plumley and his wife, Billie, of Sacramento, Calif.; and one sister, Olga Gordon Peppers of Winchester, Va. Sawyers Jr. FALLS CHURCH, Va. - Glyndon W. ÒJohnÓ Sawyers Jr. died April 22, 1999, in a Fairfax, Va., hospital following a short illness. Mr. Sawyers was the son of the late G. W. ÒJimmyÓ and Madeline Moodespaugh Sawyers of Cranberry. He and his wife had lived in the Washington metropolitan area since 1962 and resided in Falls Church, Va., since 1967. He was a 1958 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School before serving an apprenticeship in cabinet making and working for Giant Food Maintenance since the early 1970s. Mr. Sawyers was preceded in death by a brother, Conrad ÒConnieÓ Sawyers and a sister, Beverly Sawyers. Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Lynda Oscar Sawyers; a son, J. Michael and his wife, Myra, of Haymarket, Va.; a daughter, Johanna M. Sawyers, of Falls Church, Va.; a niece Valinda Donovan; two sister-in-laws Vera Lockley of Winchester, Va. and Tina and her husband, Frank Rakes, of Beckley; a brother-in-law, Galen Oscar of Winchester, Va.; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and many wonderful friends. The family received friends at DeMaine Springfield-Annadale Chapel, Backlick and Edsall Road, Springfield, Va. April 24. The funeral was conducted there April 25, with graveside services at Shenandoah Memorial Park, Winchester, Va.
