Register Herald Obituaries for May 17, 1999 Steven Dale Comer PENCE SPRINGS -- Steven Dale Comer, 38, died Thursday, May 13, 1999, at his home. Born March 6, 1961, at Union, he was the son of Marie Jackson Comer of Pence Springs and the late William Denver "Bunk" Comer. Mr. Comer was a lifelong resident of Summers County and a member of the Pence Springs Community Church. Mr. Comer was also a musician with the Tri-County Cutups, a farmer and a carpenter. Other survivors include a son, Joshua Steven Comer of Pence Springs; one sister, Anita Comer of Pence Springs; one brother, William Denver "Bill" Comer of Pence Springs; one stepson, Michael Anthony Evans of Troutman, N.C.; two stepdaughters, Michelle Branch and Crystal Evans both of Iaeger; two stepgrandchildren, Alexis Nichole Branch and Brandon Nicholas Branch. Services will be 2:30 p.m. today at Pence Springs Community Church with Pastor Roger Persinger officiating. Burial will follow in the Keller Church Cemetery at Lowell. Friends may call one hour before services today at the church. Born Sept. 26, 1980, in Summers County, he was the son of Sherry A. Wright Ward and stepfather Oliver Ward of Hix and Ivan Wayne Gill Sr. and stepmother Ruby Gill of Hinton. Mr. Gill was a lifelong resident of Summers County and employee of Hix Mountain Construction at Hix. Other survivors include one son, Dakota Wayne of Hinton; one sister, Jennifer Dawn Ward of Hix; one half brother, Noah Gill of Hinton; two half sisters, Nena Gill of Hinton and Susie Gill Reynolds of Princeton; maternal grandparents, Billy Keith and Viola Wright of Stateroad, N.C.; paternal grandparents, Jesse and Robert Holland of Sandstone; and paternal stepgrandmother, Frances Ward of Hix. Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Chestnut Grove Baptist Church at Hix with Pastors Eddie Johnson and Benny Allen officiating. Burial will follow in Cecil Ward Cemetery at Hix. Arrangements by Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors, Hinton. Valeria D. Spangler Valeria DeWitt Spangler, 92, of Bradley, died Saturday, May 15, 1999, at 3:30 p.m. in her home following a long illness. Born Feb. 12, 1907, in Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Edgar G. and Mary S. Allen DeWitt. Mrs. Spangler was a retired employee of the Ashtabula General Hospital in Ashtabula, Ohio, and had returned to West Virginia to be near her family. She was a member of the Bradley Presbyterian Church of Bradley and is sadly missed by her family and friends. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Robin Dale Lilly. Survivors include two sons, J. Dale Spangler and wife, Patty, of Beckley, and Jerry Spangler and his wife, Barbara, of Jefferson, Ohio; two daughters, Gale Spangler Lilly and her husband, Bill, of Bradley and Joan Spangler Welcome and her husband, Don, of Cirtsville; two sisters, Myrtle DeWitt Maynor of Alexandria, Va., and Doris DeWitt Moats of Millville, N.J.; and 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Bradley Presbyterian Church at Bradley with Pastor William A. "Bill" Shumate officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Beckley, and at the church one hour before services. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
