Register Herald Obituaries for May 18, 1999 Ellie Sexton Camden Ellie L. Mitchem Sexton Camden, 88, of Eccles, died Saturday, May 15, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born Feb. 28, 1911, at Thorpe, she was the daughter of the late John A. and Alice India Mitchell Mitchem. Mrs. Camden lived in Thorpe and Carswell before moving to Eccles in 1953. She was a homemaker and had been a member of the Eccles Church of God since 1954. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry F. Camden; two sons, George Sexton and Harry Frank Camden; a granddaughter, Ann Castle; five brothers, Noah, Stuart, Albert, Howard and Jack Mitchem; and four sisters, Vicie Sharder, Bessie Wade, Pearl Fowler and Eva Belcher. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Survivors include two daughters, Edith Castle and her husband, Jim, of Gary, and Delores Garris and her husband, Garland, of Eccles; five sons, Roy Camden and his wife, Betty, of Skygusty, Max Camden and his wife, Betty, of Flint, Mich., Robert Camden and his wife, Phyllis, of Beaver, Charles Camden and his wife, Gloria, of Lynchburg, Va., and Carl Camden and his wife, Kay, of Lynchburg, Va.; 19 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; and nine step great-great-grandchildren. Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Revs. Chesley Noel and George Bostic officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, Beckley. Ellis, 65, of 249 Smoot St., Beckley, died Saturday, May 15, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born June 22, 1935, at Tams, he was the son of the late Albert Ellis and Margaret Conley Ellis. Mr. Ellis was retired from the military, serving two years with the U.S. Air Force and 20 years in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served two tours of duty in the Vietnam Conflict. He was a member of the A.W. Calloway, VFW Post No. 70. Survivors include two brothers, James Ellis of Columbus, Ohio, and Howard Ellis of Beckley; and three cousins, Patricia Rispress, Sherdena Crowder, and Cheryl Kincannon, all of Columbus, Ohio. Roy W. Kemp Jr. CHARLESTON - Roy W. Kemp Jr., 50, formerly of Mullens, died Sunday, May 16, 1999, in a Huntington hospital following a short illness. Born July 11, 1948, in Mullens, he was the son of Roy W. Kemp Sr. and Peggy Hays Kemp of Mullens. Mr. Kemp was a 1971 graduate of the West Virginia University College of Pharmacy. He was secretary of the Pharmacy Technical National Certified Board, an Eagle Scout, a Phi Kappa Psi, member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mullens, and director-teacher of Pharmacy Technology at the Carver Career Education Center. Other survivors include his wife, Cathy Hall Kemp; a son, Jeffrey Kemp of Huntington; a stepdaughter, Julie McSweeney of Charleston; two sisters, Kathy McCoy and her husband, Rex, of Barboursville, and Susan Bowling and her husband, Ron, of Mullens; a brother, Walter Bruce Kemp and his wife, Liz, of Tolland, Conn.; six nieces and nephews. Born Feb. 1, 1914, at MacDonald, she was the daughter of the late Wallace Thornton and Annabelle Honaker Carter. She was a retired employee of Webb's of Mount Hope Floral with 23 years of service. She was a member of the First Church of God, Mount Hope. She was preceded in death by her husband, Perry Lay; a son, Gene Lay; four brothers, Earl, Hassel, Robert and David Carter, and a sister, Grace Carter. Survivors include a daughter, June Chandler of Mount Hope; a son, Edward Earl Lay of Bowling Green, Ohio; a special daughter, Nancy Hurd of Maryland; three sisters, Helen Richmond of Shady Spring, Dorothy Brown of Beckley, and Annabelle Callihan of Dunbar; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Mitchell RENICK - Mary Bess Caraway Mitchell, 82, formerly of Athens and Alderson, died 9:52 p.m., Saturday, May 15, 1999, in a Charleston hospital following a short illness. Born June 4, 1916, in Alderson, she was the daughter of the late Alfred Joseph and Willie Agnes McClung Caraway. Mrs. Mitchell was a teacher and member of the Alderson Presbyterian Church. She received her early education in the Greenbrier County School system, graduated from Concord College and completed additional studies at Duke University. Her teaching career began at Renick followed by Smoot, Alderson, Matoaka in Mercer County, and finally Princeton High School, where she retired in July, 1976. She was a member of the National Association of Retired Persons, a member of the Greenbrier County Democratic Executive Committee for many years, and a lay member of the West Virginia Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors for seven years. Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Isaac L. Mitchell; a son, John Joe and his wife, Kendal, of Charleston; a grandson, John Joe Jr., and his wife, Marie, of Altamonte Springs, Fla.; and one great-granddaughter, Lauren Marie, age two. Mr. Morgan was retired from C&O Railroad and was a member of the Greenbrier Regular Baptist Church, Ronceverte. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Holliday Morgan; four sisters, Beulah and Kathleen Morgan, Helen Holliday, Ramoth Mann; and a brother, Elbie Morgan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Lee Schwartz; two sons, Van Jacob and Kenneth Ray Schwartz; two brothers, Wyatt R., Isaac Wesley Pritt; and two sisters, Iva Mae Bennett and Sylvia Dean Fitzwater. Survivors include a daughter, Dottie Ramsey of Selma, Va.; two sons, Lee R. Born July 1, 1914, at Scarbro, she was the daughter of the late John Faye and Mary Metrick Faye. Mrs. Veneri was a homemaker, a lifelong resident of Beckley, and a member of the First Christian Church of Beckley. She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel P. Veneri, on March 12, 1996; and four sisters, Katherine Shmosky, Annie Proco, Helen Wellman, and Millie Martin. Survivors include two sisters, Elizabeth Cox of Beckley, and Loraine Crawford of Deltona, Fla.; several nieces and nephews including: nephews, Jeffery Crawford of Deltona, Fla., and Eddie Wellman of Reedy; nieces, Louise Martin of Roanoke, Va., and Delores Smith of Lawrenceville, Ga. Arrangements by Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Beckley. Carl D. Worley Carl D. Worley, 75, of Beckley, died Sunday, May 16, 199, in a Beckley hospital following a sudden illness. Born Dec. 15, 1923, at Glen White, he was the son of the late James Winfred and Mary Ellen O¹Dell Worley. Mr. Worley worked as a coal sampler on the tipple at Affinity Mining, having worked for Eastern Associated Coal Corp. and retired from Peabody Coal Co. He was a member of the UMWA, Beckley Moose Lodge No. 1606, Faternal Order of Eagles, American Legion Post 32 and the VFW post in Beckley. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II in which he was involved in five major battles and also involved with spearheading three of the battles. Mr. Worley received several citations during World War II, including the Presidential Citation and the Purple Heart. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Beckley. After active service, he was a member of the Army Reserve for many years and had been resident of Raleigh County most of his life. Survivors include his wife, Rose Marie Kidd Worley of Beckley; a stepson, Thomas Alfred Shrewsbury and his wife, Penny, of Kings Mountain, N.C.; a brother, Donald L. Worley and his wife, Shirley, of Tolley Town; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two nieces. Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Calfee Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with Dr. Gregory Hayes officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
