Register Herald Obituaries for May 21, 1999 Erma L. Cook PINEVILLE - Erma L. Cook, 73, died Wednesday, May 19, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born April 22, 1926, in Basin, she was the daughter of the late Edward L. and Ella McKinney. Mrs. Cook was a homemaker. She was of the Baptist faith and a lifelong resident of Wyoming County. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Survivors include two sons, George M. Cook of Richlands, Va., and Mervin Cook of Pineville; four daughters, Rebecca Amato of Reading, Pa., Kathy Houchins of Ramey Addition, Pineville, Martha Bowling of Pineville, Ella Lafferty of Oceana; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Graveside services and burial will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Bower Cemetery, Twin Falls State Park, with the Rev. Ted Olliver officiating. There will be no visitation. Arrangements by Calfee Funeral Service, Pineville. Julia Gambrell Julia Gambrell, 84, of MacArthur, died Wednesday, May 19, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born Feb. 26, 1915, in Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late John and Delia Cross Raye Irick. Mrs. Gambrell spent her childhood in Glen Fork and lived in MacArthur for the past 30 years. Survivors include a daughter, Gloria M. Holt of Crab Orchard; a son, Vernon Bailey of Parma Heights, Ohio; five grandchildren; a sister, Liddy Hugh of Prichard; and a brother, Jack Irick and his wife, Vella, of Glen Fork. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. E.G. "Buz" Keller officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Arrangements by Melton Mortuary, Beckley. Jane Plante Mitchell Jane Plante Mitchell, 62, of 4201Ž2 G St., Beckley, formerly of New York City, died of natural causes, Sunday, May 16, 1999, in a Beckley hospital. Born March 10, 1937, in Beckley, she was the daughter of Louise Plante Cheatwood of Beckley, and the late Richard Plante. Mrs. Mitchell was retired from the U.S. Postal Service in New York City following 30 years of service. She was a member of St. Luke AME Church in New York and was a 1954 graduate of Stratton High School. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Mitchell; and a sister, Charlotte Mabry. Other survivors include two brothers, Ricky Plante Jr. of Baltimore and John Cheatwood Jr. of South Plainfield, N.J.; two stepsons, Charles Mitchell Jr. of Columbus, Ohio, and J.R. "Mitch" Mitchell of Beckley; a stepdaughter, Jerrie Ann Mitchell of New Jersey; and a host of other relatives and friends. The body was cremated. There will be no services or visitation. The family will receive friends at 4201Ž2 G Street in Beckley, the home of Louise Cheatwood. Arrangements by Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor, Beckley.
