Register Herald Obituaries for November 1, 1999 Ivous A. Bennett HINTON - Ivous A. "Granny" Bennett, 81, of Madams Creek, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at her home following a short illness. Born Dec. 13, 1917, in Summers County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Laura Young Meadows. Mrs. Bennett was a member of Martha Chapel United Methodist Church, a homemaker and a lifelong resident of Summers County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Augustus Bennett, in March 1983; a son, Donel Lee Bennett, in January 1958; a grandson, Roger Bennett, in July 1995; three brothers, Roy, Arlie and Calma Meadows; and a sister, Jean Hoenig. Survivors include two sons, Jackie Bennett and his wife, Martha, and Wayne Bennett and his wife, Yonnie, all of Madams Creek; two brothers, Donald Meadows and his wife, Melba, of Madams Creek, and Basil Meadows of Layland; a brother-in-law, Bill Hoenig of Glen Burnie, Md.; three sisters-in-law, Maudie, Sylvia and Leola Meadows; four grandchildren, Larry Bennett and his wife, Denise, Sue Ballard and her husband, Mike, Karen Trent and her husband, Bruce, and Kim Downard and her husband, Jeremy; eight great-grandchildren, Geri Lynn, Joni, Justin, Adam, Kevin, Jacqueline, Colleen and Sara; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel, Hinton, with Pastor Mike Ballard officiating. Burial will follow in Restwood Memorial Gardens. Brown, 78, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at a Beckley hospital. Born March 8, 1921, he was the son of the late Creed F. Catron and Sally Dawson. Mr. Brown was a retired painter and a retired employee of the VA Medical Center in Beckley with 28 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during World War II. He was of the Protestant faith and enjoyed his pets. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. He was preceded in death by a son, Clarence Gunther Jr., who passed away in 1967. Survivors include his wife, Wanda Lee (Lilly) Brown of Beckley; three daughters, Sally Smothers, Carlea Brandon and her husband, Dan, all of Detroit, Mich., and Patricia Burnett and her husband, Wally, of Medicine Bow, Wyo.; a son, Terry Gunther and his wife, Sabrina, of Beckley; 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Born Dec. 5, 1928, at Sand Knob, he was a son of the late William Grover and Demma Irene Harner Harper. He lived the early part of his life at Sand Knob and lived most of his adult life at Clifton Forge, retiring to Sand Knob in 1987. Mr. Harper was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a retired supervisor of work equipment for CSX Corp. He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Nellie Ona Harper, in March 1999; a sister, Edith Raines; and two brothers, Walter E. and Richard Lee Harper. Survivors include his wife, Peggy Williams Harper; a daughter, Sherry Harper-McCombs and her husband, Kevin, of Carlisle, Pa.; two grandchildren, Demma Lee and Jules Robert Harper-McCombs; two brothers, W.G. Hill, 92, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, in a Summers County hospital following a short illness. Born Dec. 25, 1906, in Dawkins, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Billy and Mattie Trapp Pearson. Mrs. Hill, a Hinton resident for 61 years, was a homemaker and member of Second Baptist Church, Hinton. She was a cook for the former C&O Railroad Co. restaurant in Hinton and was renowned for her baking skills. She baked fried apple pies for many of the railroad workers for many years and forged friendships through her baking that endeared her to many in the Hinton area. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ben Brown; her second husband, Henry Hill; and three sons, John H., William P. and Burleigh Brown. Survivors include two sons, George E. Brown of St. Albans and Henry P. Hill Jr. of Pataskara, Ohio; 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. Born June 18, 1915, at Jumping Branch, he was a son of the late James T. and Edna Upton Meador. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Bobby, Ronald and Billy Meador. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Eula Waddell Meador; three daughters, Jackie Compton and her husband, Lawrence, of Shady Spring, Joy Jaramillo and her husband, Robert, of Jumping Branch and Betty Ramsey and her husband, Joseph, of Shady Spring; a brother, Howe Meador of Chula Vista, Calif.; 12 grandchildren, Laura Compton of Oak Hill, Rebecca Goode, Kimberly Jennings, Rick and T. Born Oct. 6, 1940, in Chicago, he was the son of the late Joseph and Bernice Durkowski Ozmina. Mr. Ozmina spent his early years in Albuquerque, N.M., was a graduate of Valley High School, and received a bachelor's degree in science from New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, N.M., and a master's degree in fisheries biology from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. He moved to West Virginia in 1967 to work for the Department of Natural Resources as supervisor of reclamation. He was president of D&D Reclamation and was a certified real estate appraiser and owner of Ozmina Real Estate Services on McCreery Street, Beckley. He was an active member of St. Francis de Sales Church, where he served as a Eucharist minister. He was also involved in the Boy Scouts of America for 35 years; he was a member of the executive committee of the Buckskin Council and a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. He was also a member of the Ace Hunt Club and enjoyed cooking and spending time with his dog, KoKo. He was an avid walker at Little Beaver State Park. He was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Gerri and Mike Fahey; and a special aunt, Estelle Cainski. Survivors include his wife, Betty Masters Ozmina; a daughter, Sue Ellen Christian and her husband, Ray, of Forest, Va.; two sons, David Weakley and his wife, Kate, of McGaheysville, Va., and Bill Weakley and his wife, Jeani, of Troutville, Va.; eight grandchildren, John David and Megan McCane, Sarah and Meredith Weakley, Zachary and Hannah Weakley, and Steve Christian and Michelle Campbell; a special friend, Klaye Lilly; three godchildren, Clayton, Mehgan and Kelly Lilly; a brother, Ronald Ozmina of Albuquerque; nephews Mark Fahey and Brett Boyd; and nieces Kathy and Susan Fahey. Pettry ELKINS - Frances Athylene Pettry, 87, formerly of Pax, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, in an Elkins convalescent center following an extended illness. Mrs. Pettry was born Oct. 19, 1912, in Long Branch. She was a homemaker and helpmate to her husband, who owned a business in Pax. Mrs. Pettry was a member of Long Branch United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Biddle and Pearl Williams Lively; and her husband, Alfred Winifred Pettry, on Dec. 13, 1988. Survivors include two daughters, Frances Dee Clark of Elkins and Nancy Marie Wilson of Danville, Va.; two sons, Robert Lee Pettry of Big Stone Gap, Va., and James Winifred Pettry of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; a sister, Mary Kathryn Mays of Madison, Ind.; two sisters-in-law, Blanche Pettry of Stanton, Va., and Patricia Greer of Baton Rouge, La.; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Syner spent her childhood in Wyoming County, had been a resident of Sunrise Avenue in Beckley for the past 27 years and was formerly of Coal City. She was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed crocheting afghans. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Harrison D. Richardson, second husband, Victor Marshall Gibson, and third husband, Edward Syner; three brothers, Tracy, Linville and Joseph Tolliver; and three sisters, Maggie Tolliver, Thelma Fitzwater and Mamie Farmer. Survivors include two sons, Harrison David Richardson and his wife, Chris, of Rockville, Md., and Victor M.
