Register Herald Obituaries for November 6, 1999 Rev. Sammy H. Bailey SUMMERSVILLE - The Rev. Sammy H. Bailey, 38, formerly of Cyclone, died Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Mill Creek Road near Birch River. Born Oct. 23, 1961, in Logan, he was the son of Harmon and Wanda Lusk Bailey of Cyclone. Rev. Bailey was an employee of D&K Coal Co. in Summersville, a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Summersville, and the former pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church, Richwood. He was a devoted husband, father, church member and friend. He was preceded in death by a son, Zachary; maternal grandfather, Marvin Lusk; and paternal grandfather, the Rev. Azel Bailey. Other survivors include his childhood sweetheart and wife of 16 years, Marsha Brown Bailey; a son, Matthew at home; a brother, Richard and his wife, Lorri, of Glen Fork; maternal grandmother; Winnie Lusk of Cyclone, paternal grandmother, Elsie Bailey of Cyclone; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Dennis and Doris Brown of Cyclone; two sisters-in-law, Kristi Cook and her husband, Charles, of Fairdale and Melissa Blake and her husband, Jimmy, of Summersville; three nieces, Kelli Woolum and Lindsey and Lydia Bailey; a nephew, Adam Bailey; several aunts, uncles, cousins; and a host of friends and co-workers. Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Toler Baptist Church, Cyclone, with the Revs. Bud Truman and Clarence Gibson officiating. Burial will follow in Painter Cemetery, Campus. Burgess LEWISBURG - Mary Alice Patton Burgess, 81, died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, at her home following a long illness. Born April 25, 1918, in Ronceverte, she was the daughter of the late Charles Luther and Gracie Mae Caldwell Patton. Mrs. Burgess was a member of Shuck Memorial Baptist Church, Lewisburg, American Baptist Women, Lewisburg United Prayer Group and Heritage CEO Club of Lewisburg. She was a retired cosmetic clerk with Coleman's Pharmacy. She was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Burgess; three sisters, Margaret, Helen and Myrtle; an infant sister; and two brothers, James and Harry. Survivors include a daughter, Anita Burgess Shaver of Lewisburg; a son-in-law, Joseph E. Shaver of Houston; two brothers, Charles Patton of Ronceverte and Gene Patton of Pueblo, Colo.; a brother-in-law, Hamilton Beall of Lewisburg; and two grandsons, Britton E. Shaver and his wife, Patti, of Zenith and Todd B. Shaver of Lewisburg. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Shuck Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Ron Miller officiating. Lucas James Allen Lucas, 49, of Beckley, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, in a Cleveland hospital following a short illness. Born Feb. 11, 1950, in Pettus, he was the son of the late William Clarence and Geraldine Trelba Jarrell Lucas. Mr. Lucas spent his childhood in Torrance, Calif., settling in Beckley in 1978. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1968 to 1972 during the Vietnam War obtaining the rank of specialist fifth class. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, George and Virginia Lucas; and maternal grandmother, Mildred Jarrell. Survivors include two daughters, Tina Quinn of Holly Hills and Mary Ann Byrd of MacArthur; two sons, James A. Lucas and his wife, Sheryl, and Joseph Lucas, all of Beckley; his mother who raised him since the age of 3, Evelyn Lucas of Torrance; his maternal grandfather, Roger Jarrell of Whitesville; two brothers, William Lucas Jr. and Patrick Wilson, both of Cleveland; and three grandchildren, Kadie Nicole Coker, Terry Lee Del Pizzo and Dakota Marie Lyons. Services will be 1 p.m. Sunday at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Born March 14, 1925, in Frankford, she was the daughter of the late Gus and Irene Fuller Clemons. Mrs. Musser was an exceptionally devoted and loving mother and a resident of Lewisburg for more than 50 years. Survivors include her husband, George A. Musser; a daughter, Juanita Wicker of Leesburg, Va.; two sons, Wayne Musser of Virginia and Richard Musser of Lewisburg; a sister, Ruth Clemons of Lewisburg; five grandchildren, Chris, Rachel, Christine, George and Corynn; a great-grandchild, Chris; and many nieces and nephews. Peters, 87, of Beverly Health Care Center, formerly of 5722 Victory Ave., Charleston, died Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, in a Glasgow care center following a long illness. Born Oct. 13, 1912, in Whitesville, he was the son of the late Hubert and Alice Carnes Peters. Mr. Peters was a retired miner from Armco Steel, Montcoal, and a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church, Kanawha City. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mildred Charvez and Marguerite Ratliff. Survivors include his wife, Willa F. Peters; three sisters, Faye Odell of Summersville, Dixie Bryant of Dry Creek and Peggy Willis of Hermitage, Tenn.; and three stepdaughters. Born Aug. 18, 1952, at Colcord, he was the son of the late Harrison William and Lucille Helen Lively Pettry. Mr. Pettry was a construction worker. He was preceded in death by a brother, James David Pettry. Survivors include three daughters, Wyoma Fay Pettry of Colcord, Jessica Dawn Pettry and her husband, Clinton, of Artie, and Savannah Pettry of Raleigh, N.C.; two sons, Jeremy Dewayne Pettry of Colcord and Preston Pettry of California; five sisters, Imogene Greski and her husband, Jim, of Crown Point, Ind., Eulla Grace Williams and her husband, Shelby, and Patty Conkle, all of Colcord, Wanda Runion and her husband, Jackie, of Dorothy and Martha Williams and her husband, Eddie, of Artie; two brothers, Glen Pettry and his wife, Josephine, of Ameagle, and Budgie Pettry and his wife, Lula Mae, of Dorothy; two grandchildren, Breeanna Fay Pugh and Michael Wayne Pugh II; 10 nephews; 16 nieces; 39 great-nieces and -nephews; and two great-greatnephews.
