Register Herald Obituaries for November 10, 1999 Thelma A. Adolphi Thelma A. Adolphi, 96, of Shady Spring, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, in a Beckley care center following a short illness. Born April 14, 1903, in Windham, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late George and Maude Lamoreaux Arnold. Mrs. Adolphi was a homemaker, a member of Palmetto, Fla., United Methodist Church and a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Cario, N.Y. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilfred K. Adolphi. Survivors include two daughters, Jean L. Snyder of Spencer, N.Y., and Thelma E. Willnauer and her husband, Pete, of New Britain, Conn.; a son, Wilfred K. Adolphi Jr., and his wife, Jean, of Shady Spring; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Angel BEARDS FORK - Robert Hershel Angel, 85, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, in a Montgomery hospital following a short illness. Born Nov. 18, 1913, in Sparta, Tenn., he was the son of the late Joe and Callie Milligan Angel. Mr. Angel was a retired coal miner, having worked for Hawley Fuel at Beards Fork. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America. He was preceded in death by his wife, Emilie Belka Angel, on Nov. 24, 1996; a son, Robert Franklin Angel; and four brothers, William, Clyde, Comer and J.C. Survivors include two daughters, Joyce Stover and Teresa Arthur, both of Beards Fork; three brothers, Richard Angel of Smithers, Horace Angel of Boomer and Sam Angel of Mount Carbon; two sisters, Ruth Fiecke of Boomer and Dorothy Hamlin of Columbus, Ohio; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill with the Revs. Reta Pell and J.B. Lee officiating. Entombment will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Oak Hill. Born May 31, 1928, in Beckley, she was the daughter of Lucy Catherine Edwards of Corinne and the late Roderick O. Edwards. Mrs. Brooks had been a 30-year resident of Jacksonville, Fla., attended Mullens United Methodist Church, was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Mullens Chapter No. 100, and was employed as a bank teller at Springfield Atlantic Bank in Jacksonville, Fla., where she retired. She was preceded in death by her husband, William A. Brooks, on May 19, 1985; and two brothers, Charles Edwards and Richard Edwards. Survivors include two daughters, Colleen Brazell and her husband, Robert, of Kingsland, Ga., and Cathy Huff and her husband, Mike, of Mullens; five grandchildren, Wade Brazell, Marcia Smith, Rebecca Brazell, John Avis Brazell and Rusty Huff; and three great-grandchildren, Cole and Casey Brazell, and Jessica Smith. Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Mullens United Methodist Church with the Rev. Brent Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park, Princeton. Cales, 77, formerly of Oak Hill, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, in a Toledo medical center following a long illness. Born Sept. 10, 1922, in Leeville, she was the daughter of the late John Holley and Ethel Banfield Holley. Mrs. Cales attended Full Gospel Church of Scarbro and was a member of Oak Hill Moose Lodge No. 1664. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Cales. Survivors include a sister, Marietta Mitchell of Toledo; many nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Cales of Oak Hill. Collier Frederick Cecil "Fred" Collier, 81, of Overlook Drive, Beckley, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born May 19, 1918, in Osaka, Va., he was the son of the late John Alexander and Martha Maggard Collier. Mr. Collier moved to Raleigh County at the age of 12, spending his childhood at Eccles, and had been a resident of Stanaford Acres for the past 26 years. He was a 1936 graduate of Trap Hill High School. He retired as a district quality control supervisor for Eastern Associated Coal after more than 30 years of service. He was a member and deacon of First Christian Church, Courthouse Square, Beckley. Mr. Collier was an avid hunter and fisherman and he enjoyed woodworking and bird watching. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Milford and Don Collier; two sisters, Velma Collier and Vera Collier Fleenor; and three nephews, Jack and Bill Fleenor, and Robert Collier. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Doris Hollandsworth Collier; two daughters, Martha Sue Collier Rizzo and her husband, Robert, of Shepherdstown and Becky Collier Doman and her husband, Dan, of Beckley; four grandchildren, Robert F. Rizzo, Jeanna M. Mancini, Karen S. Hensell and Sally A. Doman; a great-grandson, George R. Mancini; a sister, Louise Baker of Milton; and several nieces and nephews. Lilly Henry Clarence Lilly, 94, of Beckley, formerly of Beaver, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born July 8, 1905, in Ellison Ridge, he was the son of the late Robert and Ella Lilly. Mr. Lilly was a lifelong resident of Raleigh County and was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Retta Hampton Lilly; a grandson, Joel Lilly; and a son-in-law, Franklin W. Barnes. Mr. Lilly was owner and operator of Henry's Market in Beaver for 45 years. He was an avid supporter of The Lilly Reunion, serving as executive vice president and grand marshal for many years. He was a member of Beaver First Baptist Church. Mann, 81, formerly of Summers County, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, in a Toledo hospital following a long illness. Born Aug. 12, 1918, in Minden, he was the son of the late William and Ada Mae Shanks Mann. Mr. Mann lived the early part of his life at Ballengee. He was a former coal miner, a former employee of Texaco Oil Co. and worked as a bus driver for Community Traction Co. Along with his son, he was co-owner and operator of Harry's Marathon, a service station in Toledo. Harry was a noted musician in southern West Virginia, having sung and played with Little Jimmy Dickens on a Beckley radio station in the early 1940s. Due to injuries received while working as a coal miner, he was unable to serve in the military during World War II, so he and his wife moved to Cincinnati to work in munition factories. In 1952 he moved to Toledo, where he lived until the time of his death. Mr. Mann was a member of Calvary Bible Chapel of Toledo. He was preceded in death by a brother, William D. Mann. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Rachel Birchfield Mann; two sons, Edward L. Mann and Edgel L. Mann and his wife, Sharon; two daughters, Phyllis Cady and her husband, Tony, and Shirley Mowery and her husband, Ray; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
