Born Sept. 30, 1915, in Glen White, she was the daughter of the late James and Bertha Rakes Thompson. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Akers. Survivors include a son, David Akers Jr. and his wife, Peggy, of Indiana, Pa.; a daughter, Sandra Edgar and her husband, John, of Circleville; six grandchildren, Mrs. Brian (Paige) Ball, David Akers III, Megan Akers, James Edgar, Charles Edgar and Mrs. Brian (Elizabeth) Weller; and five great-grandchildren. Born Sept. 16, 1926, he was the son of the late Elbert Leonard and Blanch Miller Campbell. Mr. Campbell was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Red Sulphur Springs, where he served as secretary and treasurer of the Men's Fellowship and was head usher. He was preceded in death by a sister, Reva Campbell, in 1929. Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Ruth Cummings Campbell; a son, Frank L. Canterbury and his wife, June, of Ballard; three brothers, Raymond Campbell of Narrows, Va., Ralph Campbell of Red Sulphur Springs and Russell Campbell of Dry Pond; four sisters, Rachel Meadows of Princeton, Rosie Gerke of Parma, Idaho, Ruth Anderson of Ballard and Reta Mohler of Peterstown; three grandchildren, Brian Canterbury, Richard Canterbury and Diedra Canterbury; and four great-grandchildren. Born March 6, 1947, in Buffalo, N.Y., he was the son of Calantha Hizer Hale and the late Frank M. Hale. Mr. Hale was retired from Ford Motor Co. as a supervisor. He was a former member of Morning Star Baptist Church, Skelton, and a member of Greater Grace Temple, Detroit. Mr. Hale was a 1965 graduate of Stratton High School, Beckley, and a member of the Stratton High School Band. Survivors include his former wife, Carol Daniel Hale; two sons, Stanley D. Hale Jr. of Columbus, Ohio, and Kenneth D. Born Jan. 27, 1916, in Summers County, he was the son of the late Arch Lawrence and Virginia Pettrey Lawrence. Mr. Lawrence retired from Pocahontas Fuel Co. at Itmann and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America, Local 9690. He was of the Pentecostal faith and enjoyed gardening. He was preceded in death by a son, Dallas Lawrence; a grandson, Mark Lawrence; three brothers, Russell Lawrence, Harless Lawrence and Zed Lawrence; a sister, Grace Young. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Ruth Fox Lawrence; two sons, Robert Lawrence and Homer Lawrence and his wife, Shelby, all of Princeton; three grandchildren, Robert Dwayne Lawrence, Phillip Lawrence and Deborah Anderson; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Ryan Lawrence of Princeton; and a sister, Hazel Martin of Columbus, Ohio. "Jack" Mays, 72, formerly of Skelton, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at his home following a long illness. Born Feb. 9, 1927, in Kilsyth, he was the son of the late Curtis and Sadie Merritt Mays. Mr. Mays was a retired MCI/World Communications employee, was of the Baptist faith and served with a U.S. Army Airborne Division, the Korean Conflict, from 1951 to 1961. Survivors include his wife, Susan H. Mays; a son, William R. Mays and his wife, Gail, of Midlothian, Va.; a daughter, Judith A. Underwood, 83, formerly of Shady Spring, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, in a Charleston hospital following an extended illness. Born Sept. 30, 1916, in Rock, he was the son of the late William Underwood and Eustatie Syers Underwood. Mr. Underwood was a retired transportation director for the Raleigh County school system and former member of Perry United Methodist Church, Shady Spring, where he was a lay person for many years. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, serving in the South Pacific. He was a member of the VFW, the Beckley Shepherd Center for Retired People, AARP and a charter member of the Shady Spring Ruritan Club. Mr. Underwood was a member of the State Transportation Directors Association, being past president and secretary, an honorary member of the New River Dental Society and member of Win-O-Bago International Travel Club. Survivors include his wife, Glenna P. Underwood; a daughter, Barbara Lynch of Charleston; a brother, Woodrow Underwood of Narrows, Va.; and a grandson, Charles A. Lynch. Born March 7, 1925, in Meadow Creek, he was the son of the late Wilbur "Chip" and Annie Clements Vandall. Mr. Vandall was a retired coal miner, a member of Bradley Presbyterian Church and the UMWA. He was a World War II U.S. Army Air Corps veteran. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Margie Jewell Vandall, on Feb. 9, 1998; two brothers, Wilbur "Buster" Vandall and Jessie Vandall; and a sister, Pauline Berry. Survivors include a son, David Vandall of Bradley; a daughter, Linda Moore of Reisterstown, Md.; three brothers, Robert Vandall of Beloit, Ohio, Chester A. Vest PRINCETON – Belle Richards Vest, 92, of Princeton Health Care Center, formerly of Lake Shawnee, went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999. Born Jan. 21, 1907, in Raleigh County, she was the daughter of the late Joe and Ernestine Hurst Calfee. Mrs. Vest was a member of Matoaka Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and children's mission groups, and sang and played the piano. She spent many years singing in trios and quartets and sang in many revivals throughout Mercer County. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Roy F. Richards; her second husband, Arlie G. Vest; two sons, Ray M. Richards and an infant son, James Howard Richards; a grandson, Charles Barry Anthony; two brothers, Steve Calfee and Roscoe Calfee; and three sisters, Marsha Pack, Beulah Walker and Geneva Underwood. Survivors include two sons, Frank Richards and Joe Richards and his wife, Maxine, all of Princeton; three daughters, Beulah Allen and her husband, Coe, of Beckley, Helen Testino and her husband, Anthony, of High Point, N.C., and Nancy Anthony of Lake Shawnee; a brother, Ernest Calfee and his wife, Dorothy, of Raleigh; a sister, Violet Welch and her husband, John, of Raleigh; 14 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
