Register Herald Obituaries for November 14, 1999 Charles Elmer Brooks ALDERSON – Charles Elmer Brooks, 71, died Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999, at his home following a long illness. Born July 15, 1928, in Fort Spring, he was the son of the late John W. and Effie Dowdy Brooks. Mr. Brooks was a lifelong resident of Alderson and attended Blue Sulphur Springs Church of God. He worked as a mechanic for 23 years for Copeland Chevrolet, Alderson, worked for Black Rock and Anderson Paving for many years, served as custodian of the Methodist Church, Church of God and Presbyterian Church in Alderson and was a constable in Greenbrier County for many years. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Glenna Mae Brooks; a daughter, Mary Boggs and her husband, Phillip, of Blue Sulphur Springs; a stepson, Charles Eary and his wife, Evelyn, of Mount Nebo; two granddaughters, Roberta Tincher of Alderson and Betsy Weikle and her husband, Doug, of Organ Cave; two stepgrandsons, John Eary and his wife, Patty, of Mount Nebo and Greg Eary of Alderson; and four great-grandchildren, Delilah, Adam and Ernie Tincher of Alderson and Cody Weikle of Organ Cave. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Longanacre Funeral Home, Fort Spring, with the Revs. William Hoylman and Marcus Burgher officiating. Burial will follow in Fletcher Addition of Alderson Cemetery. "Bob" Harless Sr., 73, of Coal City, died Friday, Nov. 12, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born June 16, 1926, in Tams, he was the son of the late Robert James and Bertha Mae Blackburn Harless. Mr. Harless was a retired coal miner, a member of Mount Olive Freewill Baptist Church and a member of the UMWA, District 29, Local 6108. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Jewell Blackburn, Arthur Harless and Harold Harless; and five sisters, Nellie Weaver, Margie Maynard, Anise Collins, Leah Walton and Lorrean Thorn. Survivors include his wife, Flora Keffer Harless; three sons, Robert Howard Harless Jr. and his wife, Donna, of Clayton, N.C., Daniel E. Harless and his wife, Nancy, of Mabscott and Kenneth N. Harless of Coal City; two daughters, Nellie G. Harless of Coal City and Joyce A. Griffith and her husband, George, of Beckley; a brother, Jerry Harless of Bloomfield, Pa.; a sister, June Lawson of Dillion, Va.; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Born May 29, 1918, in Rosendorf, she was the daughter of the late Albert Van and Lucinda Carr Swearingen. Mrs. Howard was a retired registered nurse and a member of Buckeye Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by a sister, Selma Blagun; and two brothers, John and Charles Swearingen. Survivors include her husband, James W. Howard; two daughters, Flossie Barkley and her husband, Donnie, of Denton, N.C., and Sarah Howard O'Brien and her husband, David, of Reston, Va.; a son, James J. Howard and his wife, Connie, of Buckeye; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at VanReenen Funeral Home Chapel, Marlinton, with the Rev. Pannell Marlene J. "Polly" Pannell, 64, of 500 F St., Beckley, died at 10:15 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999, at Raleigh General Hospital following a long illness. Born Dec. 13, 1934, in Beckley, she was the daughter of the late John and Ella Ferguson Burke. Mrs. Pannell was a seamstress and homemaker. She was a member of St. Frances de Sales Catholic Church, Beckley, where she belonged to the Ladies Auxiliary and was a Sunday school teacher. She was also a member of Club II, Friendly Few Club, Homemakers Club and the American Legion Post 70 Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by six brothers, John, Leonard, Lacy, Elbert, Richard and Howard; and two sisters, Eva and Madeline. Survivors include her husband, Raymond L. Pannell; a daughter, Denise Hill and her husband, Ronald, of Nashville, Tenn.; two stepsons, Raymond Pannell of Springfield, Mass., and Michael Pannell and his wife, Tonya, of Wooster, Mass.; a stepdaughter, Modern Pannell of Springfield; a grandson, Christian Hill of Nashville; three sisters-in-law, Mary Burke of Tampa, Fla., Roberta Bayne of Beckley and Ann Pannell of Jamaica, N.Y.; three brothers-in-law, James "Joker" Pannell of Durham, N.C., Walter Lee Pannell and his wife, Phyllis, of Cleveland and Norman Pannell and his wife, Ann, of Beckley; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends. Born Oct. 5, 1920, in Glen White, she was the daughter of the late George and Priscilla Helem. Mrs. Wheeler was a homemaker and mother. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Q. Wheeler. Mrs. Wingler was an employee of Granny's House Restaurant and a member and elder of First Presbyterian Church, White Sulphur Springs. Survivors include her husband, Buck Wingler; two daughters, Deborah Wingler Jorgenson of Wildwood Crest, N.J., and Nan Wingler of Bridgeport; a son, Kenny Wingler of Boca Raton, Fla.; two granddaughters, Karen Marie and Kristen Amber Jorgenson; and a brother, John Martin of Lewisburg.
