Register Herald Obituaries for November 15, 1999 Charles Elmer Brooks ALDERSON – Charles Elmer Brooks, 71, passed away Saturday, November 13, 1999, at his home after a long illness. Born July 15, 1928, in Fort Spring, he was the son of the late John W. and Effie Dowdy Brooks. Mr. Brooks was a lifelong resident of Alderson, attended the Blue Sulphur Springs Church of God, worked as a mechanic for 23 years for the Copeland Chevrolet in Alderson and was employed by Black Rock and Anderson Paving. He also served as a custodian for the Methodist Church, Church of God and Presbyterian Churches in Alderson and was a constable in Greenbrier County for many years. Mr. Brooks was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Susie Newberry, and one brother, Rodney Brooks. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Glenna Mae Brooks of Alderson; one daughter, Mary Boggs and her husband, Phillip, of Blue Sulphur Springs; one stepson, Charles Eary and his wife, Evelyn of Mount Nebo; two sisters, Geneva Crane of Fairlea and Mary Catherine Bowyer of Princeton; one brother, Phillip Brooks of Clifton Forge, Va.; two granddaughters, Roberta Tincher of Alderson and Betsy Weikle and her husband, Doug, of Organ Cave; two stepgrandsons, John Eary and his wife, Patty of Mount Nebo and Greg Eary of Alderson; four great–grandchildren, Delilah, Adam and Ernie Tincher of Alderson and Cody Weikle of Organ Cave. Services will be 2 p.m. today at the Longanacre Funeral Home, Fort Spring, with the the Revs. William Hoylman and Marcus Burgher officiating. Burial will follow in the Fletcher Addition of the Alderson Cemetery in Alderson. Friends called from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Longanacre Funeral Home, Fort Spring. Billy Ray Garten Billy Ray Garten, 54, of Soak Creek, formerly of Harper Heights, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999 at his daughter's residence following a short illness. Born Nov. 27, 1944, at Backus Mountain, he was the son of the late James Bill and Rachel Lee Smith Garten. Mr. Garten was a disabled coal miner and was of Freewill Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by a son, Billy Ray Garten Jr.; three brothers, Charles, Kermit and William "Junior" Garten; and a sister, Loretta Furguson. Survivors include a daughter, Pamela Garten Neal and husband Jeff of Soak Creek; a brother, Carl Garten and wife Shirley of Michigan; a sister, Dolores McKinney of Maryland; and a granddaughter, Katlyn Garten of Soak Creek. Services will be 2 p.m. today at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Beckley, with Pastor Roger Tolliver officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Other survivors include three sisters, Alison Paige Hacker, at home, and Kim Hacker and Nikki Underwood, both of Richwood; two brothers, Drew Lowther, at home, and Ryan Hacker of Camden–on–Gauley; paternal grandparents, Aletha and Wayne Hacker of Richwood; maternal grandparents, Elmon and stepgrandmother, Kathy Hall, of Webster Springs, and Inez and stepgrandfather, Dan Swoger of Phoeniz, Arizona. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Alderson Baptist Church in Craigsville with the Rev. Eddie Groves. Interment will be at the West Virginia Memorial Gardens in Calvin. Born Dec. 31, 1936, in Beckley, she was the daughter of Lily Thomas Pittman of Blue Jay and the late Cecil Martin. Mrs. Lilly was a former employee of the Bible Bookstore in Logan and was a homemaker. She was of the Church of God faith and had been a Logan resident since 1966. She was preceded in death by a brother, Jimmy Martin. Survivors include two sons, Richard D. Lilly and wife Deborah of West Logan; and Randall Lilly and wife Crystal of Huntington; three grandchildren, Ricky D. Lilly of Georgia, Ryan A. Lilly of West Logan, Chelsey Lilly of Huntington; and one great granddaughter, Ali Ferrell of Dallas, Texas. Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Tuesday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel with the Rev. R.E. Pedigo officiating. Burial will follow at the Blue Jay Cemetery at Blue Jay.
