Register Herald Obituaries for November 19, 1999 Mary G. Banks PRINCETON – Mary G. Banks, 71, formerly of Beckley, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, in a Bluefield care center following a short illness. Born Sept. 10, 1928, in Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Robert S. and Elizabeth Gilbert Goldsmith. Mrs. Banks was a homemaker, was of the Episcopal faith and had been a resident of Princeton since 1984. She was preceded in death by her husband, Col. William M. Banks, and a son, Robert McRae Banks. Survivors include a son, William M. Banks Jr. and his wife, Deborah, of Princeton; a sister, Cynthia Hill and her husband, C.R. "Bud" Hill Jr. of Fayetteville; and three grandsons, William M. Banks III, Bryan and Andrew Banks, all of Radford, Va. In keeping with Mrs. Banks' wishes her body was cremated. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley, with the Rev. Scott Trotter officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley. There will be no visitation. Barnett STATESVILLE, N.C. - Madeline Forbes Barnett, 73, of Statesville, N.C., formerly of Beckley, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, following a long illness. Born Sept. 10, 1926, in Richcreek, Va., Mrs. Barnett was the daughter of the late Grover and Bertie Humphrey Forbes. Mrs. Barnett was a former student of the School For the Blind in Romney. She was a homemaker, a member of Unity Baptist Church, and a loving mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Finley Barnett Sr.; one brother, Charles Forbes; and one sister, Evelyn Lowery. Survivors include two sons, Lee Finley Barnett Jr. and his wife Marsha, and Charlie Franklin Barnett and his wife Margaret, all of Statesville; three daughters, Frances J. Wright and her husband Billy, Wilma J. McPhee and her husband Allen, and Betty Ruth Barnett and her fiance Merrill Murphy III, all of Statesville; one brother, Edwin Forbes, of Piketon, Ohio; 18 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Bennett HINTON – Joseph Henry Bennett, 46, of 1418 Greenbrier Drive, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, in a Roanoke, Va., hospital following a long illness. Born March 29, 1953, in Hinton, he was the son of Etta Richmond Bennett of Beckley and the late Daniel W. Bennett. Mr. Bennett was a conductor for the CSX Transportation Corp. with 19 years of service. He was a member of the United Transportation Union and the Hinton Moose Lodge. He was also a member of Ascension Episcopal Church in Hinton and was a lifelong resident of Summers County. He was preceded in death by his grandmother who reared him, Addie R. Bennett. Other survivors include his wife, Shelby Martin Bennett; a son, Thomas; a daughter, Kara Bennett; two stepdaughters, Jennifer Johnson and Susan Hicks, both of Morgantown; a brother, Robert E. Burdette MEADOW BRIDGE – Stanley Clarence Burdette, 52, died Monday, Nov. 15, 1999, at his home following a long illness. Born April 21, 1947, in Rainelle, he was the son of Lucille and Clarence H. Burdette of Meadow Bridge. Mr. Burdette was an 11-year resident of Meadow Bridge and was of the Methodist faith. He was a disabled railroad engineer. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth A. "Pete" Chewning and Lucille Bennett Chewning of Hinton. Mr. Chewning was a disabled carpenter and plumber and was of the Baptist faith. He was a lifelong resident of Summers County. Born Jan. 19, 1933, in Tolleytown, she was the daughter of the late Walter E. and Della Shumate Tolley. Mrs. Gunnoe spent her childhood at Tolleytown and had been a resident of Fairdale since 1974, coming from Bolt. She was a member of the Church of Christ on Carriage Drive. She enjoyed her family and church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arlie Delmer Gunnoe, Oct. 11, 1995; a granddaughter, Denise Claypool, April 23, 1994; her stepmother who reared her, Nina Byrd Daniel Tolley; three sisters, Claudia Eunice Tolley, Geraldine Manning, and Lois Tolley Hutchinson; and three brothers, Eustace Tolley, Norman Daniel, and James Daniel. Born July 27, 1920, in Wyoming County, she was a daughter of the late Lewis and Martha Miller Massey. Ms. Hall was a homemaker and attended Clifftop Missionary Baptist Church in Beaver. She was a member of the Bellemeade Baptist Church in Sabine. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond L. Hall; two sons, Andrew and Raymond Hall; four brothers and three sisters. Survivors include two sons, Alvin Hall and his wife Diana of Glen Rogers and Timothy Hall of Glen Rogers; three daughters, Janice Gunnoe and her husband Donald of Beckley, Susan Canterbury and her husband Kerman of Beckley, with whom she resided for the past several years, and Betty Cook and her husband John of Beckley; 13 grandchildren, Thomas, Sherry, Lori, John, Matthew, Raymond, Tammy, Damon, Sarah, Courtney, Amanda, Michael and Donna; 19 great-grandchildren and two caregivers, Denise Sickles and Elizabeth Trigg. Hicks TROY, Ohio – Amy E. Hicks, 90, of 512 Crescent Drive, formerly of Green Sulphur Springs, died of natural causes 7:35 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, in a Troy hospital. Born Sept. 3, 1909, in Sandstone, she was the daughter of the late Melville L. Johnson and Ida Burdette. Mrs. Hicks was married July 22, 1935, to William B. Hicks, who preceded her in death Feb. 14, 1990. She lived in Troy, Ohio, for the last year, being formerly of Newton Falls since 1978 and of Green Sulphur Springs. Mrs. Hicks was a member of the Lake Milton Baptist Temple. She was preceded in death by her husband, three brothers and two sisters. Survivors include a son, Ray L. Hicks of Findlay, Ohio; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the James Funeral Home, 8 E. Broad St., Newton Falls, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Earl Hoke Sr.; two grandsons, Steven and Jimmy Hoke; three sisters, Pauline Ballard, Kathleen Duty, and Lorena Nelson; and two brothers, Robert L. Jr. and Carl Ballard. Survivors include a daughter, Patsy Conkle and husband, Freddy, of Roseville, Ohio; two sons, James E.
