Register Herald Obituaries for November 26, 1999 Lonnie 'Curtis' Adkins Lonnie "Curtis" Adkins, 70, of Cranberry, died Thursday, Nov. 25, 1999, at a local hospital following a short illness. Born Aug. 21, 1929, in Corinne, he was the son of the late Lonnie L. Adkins and Nina I. (Ewing) Adkins of Cranberry. Mr. Adkins was a retired custodian for the board of education with 30 years' service, last employed at Cranberry Elementary. He attended Terry Baptist Church and enjoyed going to church, fishing, hunting and helping others. He was preceded in death by his wife, Janice M. (Widener) Adkins; a brother, Virgil Adkins; and a sister, Nila Bledsoe. Survivors include a son, Curtis M. Adkins of Cranberry; two daughters, Serena Bishop and husband, Ronnie, of Cranberry, and Brenda Holley and husband, Jody, of Daniels; three grandsons, Michael S. Adkins and wife, Angela, of Cool Ridge, Brandon Bishop of Cranberry, and Brent Holley of Daniels; a granddaughter, Michele Waddell and husband, Mason, of Beaver; three brothers, Jack Adkins of Cranberry, Rubin Adkins of Beckley and Floyd Adkins of Lewisburg; five sisters, Drema Bragg of Jumping Branch, Mary Obugene of Cranberry, Irene Cook of Crab Orchard, Elizabeth Navarro of Toledo, Ohio, and Jewell Rawls of Beckley; and a very special friend, Maxine Merrick. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dorothy Osborne and the Rev. E.G. "Buzzy" Keller officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Knapp Allen Grace Edith Knapp Allen, 93, of Alderson, died Thursday, Nov. 25, 1999, at the home of her daughter in Alderson following a long illness. Born Aug. 16, 1906, in Alderson, she was the daughter of the late Albert W. and Mary Margaret Hedrick Knapp. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Oakey Allen; three brothers, Ervin Knapp, Clarence Knapp, and James Knapp; and one sister, Gladys Thompson. Mrs. Allen was a homemaker and a member of the Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church, Alderson, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women and the Ladies Circle. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary 2000. Survivors include one daughter, Hilda Allen Parker Sims of Alderson; one brother, Calvin R. Knapp and wife Edith of Alderson; one sister, Faye Knapp Kirby and husband, Dolin, of Alderson; two grandsons, James Howard Parker and wife Shirley of Covington, Va., and Ward M. Parker and wife Joyce of Alderson; seven great-grandchildren, 12 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Born March 3, 1917, in Pike County, Ky., Mr. Castle was the son of Dow and Della Castle. He was a lifelong resident of Fayette County, a former employee of Semet-Solvay and a justice of the peace for several years in Fayette County. He was a member of the Fayetteville Lions Club and Cotton Hill Baptist Church. Mr. Castle was preceded in death by two sons, Roger and Raymond; his parents; sisters, Elza, Janie and Hester; and brother, Adam. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Garten; a son, Robert, of Fayetteville, and a daughter and son-in-law also of Fayetteville, Carol and Jim "Silky" Sullivan. Mr. Castle was the proud grandfather of Roger, Tawni, Shane, Heather and Sarah and the great-grandfather of Tyler, Honey and Cameron. Mr. Castle is survived by siblings, Alvin Castle of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., Hazel Phillips of Chatteroy, W.Va., and Belva Holbrook of Lashmeet; and a host of nieces and nephews and many special friends. Mr. Castle donated his body to the Human Gift Registry. Born Oct. 3, 1911, at Blue Jay, she was the daughter of the late Elbert Meadows and Melissa M. (Meadows) Meadows. Mrs. Matherly was a homemaker and a member of Beckley Regular Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Orley Carl Matherly; two sons, Orley Carl Matherly Jr. and Chester Ray Matherly; a sister, Minnie Wyatt; two brothers, Avis Meadows and Clayton Meadows; and two half brothers, John Davis and Aaron Meadows. Survivors include a son, Elbert Kenneth Matherly and wife, Ruby, of Shady Spring; two daughters, Lois Moser and husband, Wally, of Brookpark, Ohio, and Linda Dick and husband, E.O., of Princeton; a sister, Beulah Conner of Daniels; 16 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Born March 17, 1920, in Winchester, England, he was the son of John Mildenhall and Harriet Mildenhall. Mr. Mildenhall was a retired electrical engineer and a member of Pentecostal Church of God, Corinne, where he was an adult Sunday school teacher. He was preceded in death by a brother, Les Mildenhall. Survivors include his second wife, Audrey Perdue Mildenhall; a son, Robert "Bob" Mildenhall of Northwich, England; a daughter, Jane Norris and her husband, Malcum, of East Sussex, England; five stepchildren; a brother, Harry Mildenhall of Winchester, England; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Services will be 2 p.m. today at Pentecostal Church of God, Corinne, with the Rev. Ruth Foster and the Rev. Hilda Shorter officiating. Mrs. Mills was employed as a school cook for the board of education. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Jack Carter. She was preceded in death by her parents, Nathan and Arkie Williams Rollins; her husband, Robert Gordon (Grizzly) Settle; and one sister, Louise Dial. Survivors include daughters, Connie J. Smith and husband, Mark, of Kincaid, and Brenda G. Born Sept. 24, 1913, in White Plain, N.Y., he was the son of the late William Sledge and Annie Maria (Coleman) Sledge. Mr. Sledge was a retired coal miner. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lue Bertha (Johnson) Sledge; a daughter, two brothers and a sister. Survivors include his wife, Vera (Early) Sledge; a daughter, Marion (Sledge) Taylor of Cumberland, Va.; two nephews, Donald Sledge and Wil-liam Sledge; several grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.
