Register Herald Obituaries for October 3, 1999 Irene Fleshman QUINWOOD ­ Irene Pearl Fleshman, 87, died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at Heartland of Rainelle following a long illness. Born Nov. 8, 1911, in Quinwood, she was the daughter of the late Hubert Shawver and Nettie Dorsey Shawver. Mrs. Fleshman was a homemaker and member of the Board of Directors of Quinwood Ambulance Service. She had been active in the Quinwood Firemenettes, the senior citizens group and the Homemakers Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Fleshman, in November 1982. Survivors include a daughter, Lorell Hedrick of Roswell, Ga.; two sisters, Pauline Welch of Covington, Va., and Helena Tully of Quinwood; and three grandchildren, Hugh and John Hedrick and Ruth Ann Kansky. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Rainelle, with the Rev. Charles Stevens officiating. Entombment will follow in Wallace Memorial Mausoleum at Clintonville. Vida Hurley SAN ANTONIO ­ Vida Gaye B. Hurley, 85, formerly of Baileysville, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, in a New Braunfels, Texas, care center following a long illness. Born March 24, 1914, in Baileysville, she was the daughter of the late Otis V. and Ida Bailey. Mrs. Hurley was a homemaker and had lived in Texas since 1987. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oley Hurley, in 1957. She was the last surviving member of her family of 14 children. Survivors include three sons, Alexander "Lee" Hurley and his wife, Jane, of Converse, Texas; Johnnie K. Hurley and his wife, Jeannie, of Oceana; and Donald E. Hurley and his wife, Sheila, of Mount Hope; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Sylvia Kelly WHITESVILLE ­ Sylvia Mae Kelly, 78, of the Seng Creek area, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at her home following a short illness. Born Dec. 8, 1920, in Stickney, she was the daughter of the late Dudley Hulen and Mintie Pettry Peters. She was a member of Sylvester Freewill Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Kelly; a sister, Elsie May; and a brother, Willie Peters. Survivors include five daughters, Dian Goga of Middlesburg Heights, Ohio, Betty Taylor and Linda Peters, both of Seng Creek, Brenda Wiseman of Sylvester and Joannie Walker of Ameagle; two sons, J.C. Kelly of Dorothy and Jackie Kelly of Seng Creek; two sisters, Delcie Daniel of Seng Creek and Claudia Massey of Glasgow; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and nine stepgreat-great-grandchildren. Lora Sue Kidd Lora Sue Skelton Kidd, 41, of Shady Spring, died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, following a short illness. Born Aug. 4, 1958, in Beckley, she was the daughter of John Ray and Lora Marie Lilly Skelton of Shady Spring. She was a licensed practical nurse, a resident of Shady Spring all her life and loved being with family and friends. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Shady Spring, and was of the Christian faith. She was an avid reader, loved history and enjoyed crocheting afghans for her family. Survivors include a son, Daniel Aaron Kidd at home; a daughter, Briahna Marie Kidd at home; two brothers, John D. Skelton and his wife, Cathy, of Shady Spring and Michael R. Skelton and his wife, Barbara, of Ghent; a sister, Elizabeth Marie Pollack and her husband, Fenway, of Summersville; three nephews, Gary Skelton and his wife, Cindy, of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Christopher and Joshua Skelton, both of Ghent; and three nieces, Kimberly and Alyssa Skelton, both of Shady Spring, and Lindsay Skelton of Ghent. Lilly, 76, formerly of Beckley, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital. Born in Beckley, he was the son of Gustava Davis Lilly and the late Jesse R. Lilly Sr. Mr. Lilly graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School, Glenville State College and West Virginia University. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Lilly was a coach and teacher at Elkview High School from 1948 to 1961. He was employed at Glenville State College from 1961 to 1988, where he served as coach, instructor and athletic director. He coached the men's basketball team at Glenville State College for 20 years and was named West Virginia College Coach of the Year in 1972. He was a member of Glenville Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon, an elder and a trustee. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge of Clendenin. He was preceded in death by a brother, James G. Lilly. Survivors include his wife, Anne Withers Lilly; three sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Thomas S. and Susan Lilly of Berkeley Springs, John R. and Susan Lilly of Glenville and William W. and Jennifer Lilly of Radford, Va.; three grandchildren, Jacob R. Lilly, Abby Q. Lilly and Maggie B. Lilly, all of Glenville; a sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Albert Bennett of Beckley; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Jack and Ethel Lilly and Bill and Carol Lilly, all of Beckley, and Gene and Amanda Lilly of Staunton, Va.; and a sister-in-law, Lou Lilly of Oak Hill. Born July 3, 1999, in Kimball, she was the daughter of the late Marion and Minnie Lockhart Green. Mrs. Stewart was a graduate of Herndon High School, attended West Virginia Tech and graduated with a degree in education from Concord College in Athens. She taught school in Wyoming County for 12 years, did social work in Pineville and served as a clerk in Cleveland. She was a member of Missionary Baptist Church, Rock View, and belonged to the Order of Eastern Star, Pineville Chapter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claren Estil Stewart; a son, Jerry Michael Stewart; two brothers, Calvin and Mason Green; and a sister, Faye Bennett. Survivors include two brothers, Luther Green of Princeton and John Green of Westville, N.J.; and several nephews and nieces. Mrs. Stokley was a lifetime resident of Winona, a member of Keeney Creek Baptist Church, Winona, and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Stokley, in 1993, two sons-in-law, James M. King Sr. and Lewis Walker Small; and a great-grandson, Christopher Cook. Survivors include two daughters, Virginia Small of Winona and Wanda Jean Stokley King of Soak Creek; a brother, Frank Ramsey of Ansted, eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Toler, 85, died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born June 5, 1914, in Uno, she was the daughter of the late Booker and Tennessee Blankenship. Mrs. Toler was a member of Joseph Baptist Church and a member and past president of the Ladies Aid. She was a 1933 graduate of Iaeger High School and worked for H.E. Harman Coal Co. as a sales clerk and office worker in the 1940s. Mrs. Toler also was the former owner and operator of Lilly Grove Grocery, Princeton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Toler, in 1985; four brothers, Matthew, Will, Garvey and Hannibal Blankenship; and an infant sister, Ina Blankenship. Survivors include a son, Rodney Toler and his wife, Libby, of Lynco; two brothers, Elmer Blankenship and his wife, Barbara, of Harper Wood, Mich., Rondal Blankenship of Mineral City, Va.; three sisters, Orpha Noyes of Lyn Wood, Wash., Zelma Racy and her husband, Harry, of Sun City, Ariz., and Grace Thompson of Iaeger; two grandchildren, Randy Toler of Lynco and Shawna Hoosier of Pineville; and three great-grandchildren, Stephen, Danielle and Mistie Hoosier of Pineville.
