Register Herald Obituaries for October 28, 1999 Sam Fain Sam Fain, 77, of Sprague, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born Feb. 15, 1922, in Patrick County, Va., he was the son of the late William Andrew and Elizabeth Nunn Fain. Mr. Fain spent his childhood at Pemberton, MacArthur and Crab Orchard, and had been a resident of Sprague for the past 30 years. He was of the Baptist faith, a disabled coal miner, having last worked at Trailee Mines, and a member of the UMWA. He had 21 years in the coal industry. Mr. Fain was a proud veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army with the rank of private. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and in France and Normandy, and served in the National Guard. In May 1981 he was appointed an honorary mountaineer brigadier in the West Virginia State Militia by Robert L. Childress, the adjutant general of West Virginia. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Fay Martin Fain; three sons, James. E. Fain of New York, Keith A. Fain of Beckley and Samuel Lee Fain and his wife, Karen, of Phoenixville, Pa.; six granddaughers, Stacie Fain Cobb, Sherri Fain and Amber Dawn Fain, and Mary Kate, Julie Anna and Elizabeth Rose Fain; a brother, Cecil Fain and his wife, Melisa, of Marble, N.C.; two sisters, Freda Fain Laws of Prosperity and Hester Mills of Elkton, Md.; and a special sister- in-law, Margie White of Beckley. Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Randy Carroll officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the mortuary. Friends of the family will serve as pallbearers. Oak Hill VFW Post 3110 will conduct military graveside rites. Arrangements by Melton Mortuary, Beckley. Janet M. Harvey Janet M. Harvey, 63, of Ghent, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, at her home following a sudden illness. Born Sept. 12, 1936, in Fitzpatrick, she was the daughter of the late Alva and Eva Hatcher Bowling. Mrs. Harvey was a homemaker and the former co-owner and operator of Harvey's Garage, Ghent. She was a member of Order of Eastern Star, Chapter No. 136 at Coal City, attended Trinity Baptist Church and had been a Ghent resident for 36 years. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Mike Bostic; a sister, Evelyn Wyatt; and four infant brothers. Survivors include her husband of 44 years, Eugene C. Harvey; two sons, Bruce Harvey and his wife, Janice, and Troy Harvey and his wife, Patricia, all of Daniels; a daughter, Onita Meadows and her husband, Randy, of Shady Spring; two brothers, Acel Bowling of Elyria, Ohio, and John Bowling of Lorain, Ohio; five sisters, Janice Setliff of Elyria, Mabel Pack of Berlin Heights, Ohio, Mary Carson of Vermillion, Ohio, Cosby Stone of New Philadelphia, Ohio, and Martha Seabolt of Navarre, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel with Brother Danny Winders officiating. Burial will follow in Flat Top Cemetery.
