Register Herald Obituaries for October 29, 1999 Helen M. Acord Helen Margaret Acord, 72, of Beckley, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born March 29, 1927, in Crab Orchard, she was the daughter of the late Frank Snuffer and Margaraet Fitzpatrick Snuffer. Mrs. Acord was a homemaker and a resident of Raleigh County for the past 30 years. She formerly attended Hollywood Missionary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Fernandez and Esther Snuffer; four brothers, James, Albert, Herbert and Hubert Snuffer; and a great-granddaughter, Bobbi Lynn Jordan. Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Cleat C. Acord; two sons, Gary L. Acord and his wife, Juel, of Red Star and Frank Acord and his wife, Beverly, of Maple Fork; three daughters, Janet Bowen and her husband, Rik, of Marietta, Ohio, Kathy Bell and her husband, Chris, of Dayton, Ohio, and Susan McGinnis of Beckley; two brothers, Paul Snuffer of Charleston and Davis Snuffer of Beckley; four sisters, Arlett Brown and Garnett Sanchez, both of Plant City, Fla., and Mabel Clay and Jewell Garten, both of Oak Grove; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great- grandchildren. Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with Pastors Edward Garten, Bob Nichols and Carl Sellards officiating. Darby, 91, formerly of Sophia, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, at Crest Wood Care Center, Shelby, Ohio, following a long illness. Born Sept. 7, 1908, in Greenup, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Lyde Callahan Williams. Ms. Darby was a charter member of Sophia Church of God, where she served the congregation as Sunday school teacher, choir member, member of the Willing Workers women's group and 43 years as church secretary and treasurer. She was employed 36 years as ward secretary for Beckley Hospital. She had a vibrant personality and never met an enemy. An avid flower gardener, she enjoyed craft needlework, including crocheting and sewing. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Edward Darby. Survivors include two sons, Clyde M. Darby and his wife, Merle, of Lexington, Ohio, and Bill E. Darby and his wife, Nancy, of Lorton, Va.; two beloved lifetime friends, Martha Blair of Cleveland, Tenn., and Sylvia Burnett of Beckley; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Sophia Church of God with the Revs. Roy Martin and James Bostic officiating. Burial will follow at Hot Coal Cemetery, Sophia. Born June 22, 1961, in Mullens, she was the daughter of Dixie Daughtery Vance of Midway, Ga., and the late William E. Massey. Ms. Massey was a longtime participant at the Greenbrier County Sheltered Workshop. Other survivors include her stepfather, John Vance of Midway, Ga.; two sisters, Eva E. Massey of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Carolyn S. Morgan and her husband, Teddy, of Clear Fork; five brothers, Donald L. Massey and his wife, Paula, of Oceana, William E. Massey Jr. and Archie J. Massey, both of Savannah, Ga., Eugene T. Massey of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Danny R. Massey and his wife, Sherry, of Rock View; three stepbrothers, Richard C. "Grandpa" Nowlin, 97, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born April 14, 1902, in Mount Hope, he was the son of the late William and Mary Bell Adkins Nowlin. Mr. Nowlin was a retired Kanawha County Board of Education school bus driver. He was also a retired coal miner with 32 years of service, and retired from Peoples Insurance Co. with 30 years of service. He was a member of Oak Hill United Methodist Church and a 70-year member of Oak Hill Lodge No. 120 AF and AM. He was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Wells Nowlin, on Nov. 1, 1980; and a brother, William Everett Nowlin. Survivors include a daughter, Juanita N. Bailey of Oak Hill; a brother, Arnie H. Nowlin of Michigan; a sister, Irene Wright of Charleston; three grandsons, Lawrence G. Bailey of Charleston, Gary N. Bailey of Oak Hill and Charles E. Bailey of Fayetteville; and eight great- grandchildren. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with the Rev. James Shepherd officiating. Mr. Ramsey was a member of Mountain Baptist Church, Carl, and Hominy Falls Reservation, and was a disabled truck driver and coal miner. Survivors include his wife, Joan Martin Ramsey; three sons, Gregory Allen Ramsey of Glasgow, Va., and Paul James Ramsey and Travis Wayne Ramsey, both at home; a sister, Brenda Lewis of Alderson; and two brothers, Alva Ramsey of Rainelle and Clayton Ramsey of Carl. Mrs. Stover was a retired clerk for the U.S. Postal Service and a member of Maxwell Hill Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Arlie Stover, in 1988. Survivors include a daughter, Melba Merrill and her husband, Charles, of Fredericksburg; a son, Vernon Stover and his wife, Nancy, of Glen Daniel; two sisters, Wabie Simmons of Carpentersville, Ill., and Mary Cole of Naoma; and a brother, Speed Scarbro of Rock Creek.
