Register Herald Obituaries for October 31, 1999 Oscar Beeman PRINCETON – Retired Sgt. 1st Class Oscar Monroe Beeman, 84, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at a Princeton hospital following a long illness. He had been a resident of Harmony House, a private care home in Lerona, since September. Born June 22, 1915, in Welch, he was the son of the late James and Minnie Plemmons Beeman. Mr. Beeman served in the U.S. Army for 23 years, including World War II, the Korean War and the beginning of the Vietnam War. He retired in 1966 as sergeant 1st class E-6. Some of the countries he served in were Korea, Germany, South Africa, France, Austria and Italy. He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal among many others. He was also one of the first U.S. soldiers to enter the city of Vienna, Austria, as a member of Gen. Mark W. Clark¹s Fifth Army. He served as part of the U.S. Seventh Army, Second Armored Division known as "Hell on Wheels" in World War II and a member of the 124th Ordnance Co. After his retirement he was a mechanic for Walt Dempsey Chevrolet, Princeton, and Clover Dew Dairy, Green Valley, until its closing. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dora L. Hurley Beeman; a granddaughter, Melanie Winfrey of Beckley; four brothers, Clarence, Paul, Oddie and Charles Beeman; and two sisters, Geneva Green and Hazel Bevill. Survivors include two sons, Douglas M. Beeman and his wife, Charlotte, of Kegley, and Danny Hurley of Green Valley; two daughters, Ellen Thomas and her husband, Wayne, of Beckley and Joyce Delp and her husband, David, of Indianapolis; two brothers, Julian Beeman and his wife, Loraine, of Blacksburg, Va., and Raymond Kenneth "R.K." Beeman and his wife, Elaine, of Princeton; seven grandchildren, Shannon Winfrey Honaker, Kristin Winfrey, Amy Beeman Wimmer, Kelly and Ashleigh Delp, Darin Winfrey and Aaron D. Beeman; and five great-grandchildren, Bert and Cole Honaker, Britton Thomas and Austin and Kody Wimmer. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Burns-Wornal Chapel of Memorial Funeral Directory, Athens Road, Princeton, with the Rev. David Delp officiating. Burial will follow in Trail Cemetery, Princeton, where military graveside rites will be conducted by the Sandy River District American Legion Post 175 of Bradshaw and the Mercer County Veterans Council. Arrangements by Memorial Funeral Directory, Princeton. ---------- Ocie Marie Bruce HINTON – Ocie Marie Bruce, 93, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at a local hospital following a long illness. Born Feb. 7, 1906, in Chillochee, Mo., she was the daughter of the late Henry Augustus and Ollie Maude Allnutt Young, and lived most of her life in Hinton. Mrs. Bruce was a junior nurse at old Hinton Hospital, was a member of Central Baptist Church and the Philetha Class of the church, and attended First Christian Church, Hinton. She was a member of the Degree of Honor and a faithful volunteer member of the Summers County Hospital Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marion Ernest Bruce, on Jan. 22, 1975; and two brothers, Orval and O.H. "Corpal" Young. Survivors include two daughters, Marion Frances Crowder of Mount Alta and Doris K. Ramsey of Hinton; a sister, Mary Yancey of Indiana; a brother, James Young of Hinton; seven grandchildren, seven great-granchildren and several great-great-grandchildren. Clements, 65, of Beckley, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, following a long illness. Born Sept. 13, 1934, in Tams, she was the daughter of Sarah Allen Wiley of Beckley and the late David Daniel Wiley. Mrs. Clements was a retired librarian from the New York Public Library in Manhattan and was a member of New Salem Baptist Church, Tams. She was preceded in death by a son, Larry Wiley; and a brother, Harold T. Wiley. Survivors include four sons, Carlton Wiley and his wife, Francine, of Dunbar, James L. Broadmax and his wife, Christine, of New York, Anthony George Broadmax of Panama City, Fla., and Edward Warren Broadmax of Georgia; three daughters, Patricia Williams and her husband, Lamont, of Panama City, Shelia Wood and her husband, Sam, of Beckley and Angela Johnson and her husband, Louis, of Pontiac, Mich.; a brother, David Daniel Wiley Jr. of Stamford, Conn.; two sisters, Queen Schoolfield of Beckley and Dorothy Henderson of Cincinnati; 27 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Cook, 79, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, in a Welch hospital following a short illness. Born May 20, 1920, in Mullens, he was the son of the late Warren Cook and Ethel Shannon Cook. Mr. Cook was an Army veteran of World War II, was a member of Briar Creek Tabernacle and worked for United Gas Co. and Norfolk & Western Railroad. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret S. Cook; and a son, Warren D. Cline. Survivors include a daughter, Louise Kline and her husband, Lee, of Florida; a daughter-in-law, Tina Cline of Skin Fork; two sisters, Lona Finley of Huntington and Vaudaline Miller of Brenton; two brothers, Willie Cook of Briston, Tenn., and Jack Cook of Manassas, Va.; four grandchildren, Christopher Cline of Skin Fork and John Cline, Carolyn Cline and Pamela McIntyre, all of Florida. Born Aug. 1, 1911, in Hinton, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Minnie Saunders Hatcher. Mrs. Gill was a homemaker, was of the Baptist faith and lived in Summers County all of her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward C. Gill, in 1974; a son, Dan Gill; a daughter, Carol Berg; and two sisters, Ruby McGraw and Catherine Thompson. Arnold Miracle OCEANA – Arnold Miracle, 82, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, in a Beckley hospital. Born July 3, 1917, he was a retired coal miner with 41 years of service. He worked 27 years for Eastern Associated Coal Corp., Kopperstown No. 1, as a cutting machine operator. He was a member of the UMWA and District 17, and a member of Oceana Church of God. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha Miracle; a daughter, Glenna Miracle; and four brothers. Survivors include two sons, Thomas "J.T." Born March 14, 1913, in Pettrey, he was the son of the late Mary Pettrey. Mr. Pettrey was a retired roller operator for W&H Contracting and Asphalt Industries and a member of Mount Jackson Baptist Church, Athens, and Princeton Moose Lodge No. 1521. He was preceded in death by a son, Chester A. Pettrey; a daughter, Patricia Lynn Bruns; five brothers and two sisters. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Lavella Meadows Pettrey; four sons, Jerry Pettrey of Salem, Va., Gaylon Pettrey and his wife, Adell, of Clifton Forge, Va., and Travis Pettrey and his wife, Elaine, and Kenny Pettrey, all of Princeton; five daughters, Betty Pennington of Athens, Ella Louise Helton and her husband, Lloyd, of Beckley, Carolyn Harshbarger and her husband, Bill, and Kathy Pettrey, all of Princeton, and Kay Ann Wiles and her husband, Phil, of Lawrenceville, Ga.; a brother, A.B. Born June 2, 1908, in Boone County, he was the son of the late King and Fannie Brown Wiley. Mr. Wiley lived in Arnett for the past 50 years, was a Christian for over 70 years and attended local churches faithfully. He was a retired coal miner from the Armco Steel mines with 42 years of service. He was preceded in death by his two wives, Martha Jane Milam Wiley of 43 years and Lona Cantley Alderman Wiley of 24 years; two sons, Larry and David Wiley; three brothers, Emerson, Arden and Walter; and two sisters, Edith Harvey and Billie Wiley. Survivors include two sons, Jerry Wiley and his wife, Debbie, of Mabscott and James C.
